Subject: Songs Banned in Most Music Stores (Add your own!)

Written By: ChrisBodilyTM on 06/15/06 at 2:40 pm

Everyone who has seen Wayne's World knows that there are songs so precious, classic, sacred, iconic, etc., that they are banned from being played in music stores, because people don't want some 15-year-old amateur butchering the life out of the songs.

Here are just a few:

"Stairway to Heaven"
"Smoke on the Water"
"Eruption"

That's all I can think of. Can you think of any?  ;D

I think I've heard all of those songs being played in music stores (well, shopping malls at least).

Ugh, my friend tries to play "Stairway to Heaven", and believe me.. he DOES butcher it.. a lot. Hey, and he's 15 years old too!

I knew of Stairway to Heaven.. but all the music stores I've ever been in have just played some local radio station.. and it's never a station that would play Stairway to Heaven more then once or twice a year. It's usually just pop.

But I have heard of this thing, although I assumed the ban was a local thing that many stores did independent of each other.

I think he means songs banned from people playing on instruments... Like, you can't go in and start playing "Stairway to Heaven" on the guitar, because so many people do it.

The story I heard was that they couldn't even play that song over the speakers..

I've been in plenty of music stores.. I play "Stairway to Heaven" as one of the songs I use to try out Guitar Pedals (I use a few songs that are very different.. that one is a good way to check all sorts of types of playing: melodic, chord-based, rockin' 30-minute solo, etc.).. I think it's just some Urban Legend created by that movie.

The movie couldn't get permission to use it, so they made a joke of it (listen to the commentary track, I did!)

Before I knew that, I figured it had something to do with being so over played, especially by the million Page wanna-bes.  Every year at summer camp I must have heard a dozen times by a dozen bad guitar players trying to learn it.

Sounds reasonable, but I saw a sign just like it at our local music store ;D.
