Subject: My DVD project
Written By: Tia on 06/10/06 at 4:27 pm
i'm burning all my VHS tapes to DVD. i know you're all really excited.
i just did clockwatchers (comedy about temps, with lisa kudrow, in its own way just as cool as "office space") and right now... citizen kane! best movie ever until 2001: a space odyssey came along.
i'll keep y'all posted.

oo! the monologue about the girl in the white dress with the white parasol.
i only saw her for a second. she didn't see me at all. but i bet a month hasn't gone by since, that i haven't thought about her."
so great.
little known fact: turns out rosebud WASn't his sled. he was talking about a different rosebud. the whole sled thing was just a coincidence. bet you didn't know that.

U can get Clockwatchers on DVD. Saw it in a bargain bin at Wal-Mart for $5.66
But I s'pose burning them from VHS to DVD is cheaper ;D

It's a good thing to do if you have stuff you won't be able to find on DVD. Of course, the DVD quality is only going to be as good as your video quality. I did that to a couple of hard to find videos and got rid of the rest, knowing they will all eventually hit DVD.

well i already had it on VHS from years ago. it's like 75 cents per DVD i guess.
we had a power outage. i had to start over. i'm at the part where susan sings the opera, but her voice sucks. so wonderful. that's really when everything starts going downhill, it seems like, when he can't make the opera house thing work.

I also tend to convert rare, old tapes into DVD, though music videos and cartoons I doubt would appear on DVD anytime soon or that I like, but wouldn't waste on a set

this sounds cool. What type of equipment exactly do you need in order to do this? I have oodles on VHS movies...and all they do is take up space. :-\\

i bought a dvd recorder for about 200 bucks. it's a bit frustrating till you get the hang of it and every once in a while a disk just doesn't work -- my copy of "the conversation" crapped out for no good reason, now i have to fish out the tape again -- but it's pretty handy.
only problem is you can't copy copy-protected stuff and it's really on the ball about that. so all your store-bought VHS you're stuck with.

aww, that sucks. I have heard people say that they rent movies from Netflix and copy all of them by using their DVD recorder...I dunno, I guess I would be a bit leery doing that.

(i do that.) but you can only do it for old movies and crap movies like "nude for satan." the big blockbusters are all protected.

Are you doing this to save some $$? Or have many of the titles in your collection not made it to DVD?

I was gonna do that with our local movie place.. the place that lost all it's business when BlockBuster moved in used to buy one copy of every movie, keep it for themself, and make 15-20 copies.. seriously, every movie I ever got from them was on a writeable DVD. ;D
My friend has a cool decoder that gets around licenses and stuff, he's gonna make a copy for it.

I am doing the same thing at the moment too !
We are moving house in three weeks so I'm trying to get rid of a load of stuff and dvd's take up a lot less space. My problem is I am meant to be packing and I keep getting sidetracked by what's playing and sitting down to watch. ;D
DVD players are much cheaper in the U.K which surprises me, electrical stuff is usually more here.

yeah, that was originally my idea with this thread, i throw stuff on to copy it and then i start watching cuz i haven't seen it in a million years and i wanna yammer on about it. citizen kane! revenge of the cheerleaders! space: 1999!
but then i went to the UK and it's all on hold.

There are ways around that ;)

Carlos has been doing that for years plus the ones from Netflix. But there are some VHS/DVDs that won't record. :-\\ Oh well.

yeah, i've got some friends who know the whole copy protection workaround but they tend to be computer geniuses. which i totally am not. it befuddles my dumb cracker mind.
ah, i'm doing "swingers" now. i love the embarrassing phone message meltdown scene. it's the best!

Would this be some sort of comedy? ???
Subject: Re: My DVD project

it's hilarious! mike breaks up with his girlie of 6 years and goes back on the dating scene and gets the WORST advice conceivable from his friend trent. it's one of those comedies where the heroes go from one excruciatingly embarrassnig situation to another.

yeah, it's definitely for grownups.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0117802/
7.6! that's a good rating. vince vaughn is in it, and it's pretty astonishing how much he filled out between that and "the breakup." gawd!

here, the classic scene. you feel so embarrassed for the guy it's almost impossible to watch. but it's hilarious!

52 INT. MIKE'S APARTMENT - LATER THAT NIGHT 52
Mike opens the door and flicks on the lights in his sparsely
furnished single.
He drops his keys on the table and makes a bee line to the
answering machine.
He pushes the button.
ANSWERING MACHINE
(synthesized voice)
She didn't call.
Mike collapses into his futon and lights a smoke.
Beat.
He pulls out the COCKTAIL NAPKIN. He stares at the number.
He looks at the clock. 2:20 AM.
He looks at the napkin.
He thinks better of it, and puts the napkin away.
Beat.
He takes out the napkin and picks up the phone.
ANSWERING MACHINE
(synthesized voice)
Don't do it, Mike.
MIKE
Shut up.
He dials.
It rings twice, then...
NIKKI
(recorded)
Hi. This is Nikki. Leave a message.
(beep)
MIKE
Hi, Nikki. This is Mike. I met you
tonight at the Dresden. I, uh, just
called to say I, uh, I'm really glad we
met and you should give me a call. So
call me tomorrow, or , like, in two days,
whatever. My number is 213-555-4679...
(beep)
Mike hangs up.
Beat.
He dials again.
NIKKI
(recorded)
Hi. This is Nikki. Leave a message.
(beep)
MIKE
Hi, Nikki. This is Mike, again. I just
called because it sounded like your
machine might've cut me off before I gave
you my number, and also to say sorry for
calling so late, but you were still there
when I left the Dresden, so I knew I'd
get your machine. Anyway, my number
is...
(beep)
Mike calls back right away.
NIKKI
(recorded)
Hi. This is Nikki. Leave a message.
(beep)
MIKE
213-555-4679. That's all. I just wanted
to leave my number. I don't want you to
think I'm weird, or desperate or
something...
(he regrets saying it
immediately)
... I mean, you know, we should just
hang out. That's it. No expectations.
Just, you know, hang out. Bye.
(beep)
He hangs up.
Beat.
He dials.
NIKKI
(recorded)
Hi. This is Nikki. Leaves a message.
(beep)
MIKE
I just got out of a six-year
relationship. Okay? That should help to
explain why I'm acting so weird. It's
not you. It's me. I just wanted to say
that. Sorry.
(pause)
This is Mike.
(beep)
He dials again. There's no turning back.
NIKKI
(recorded)
Hi. This is Nikki. Leave a message.
(beep)
MIKE
Hi, Nikki. This is Mike again. Could you
just call me when you get in? I'll be up
for awhile, and I'd just rather talk to
you in person instead of trying to
squeeze it all...
(beep)
He dials yet again.
NIKKI
(recorded)
Hi. This is Nikki. Leave a message.
(beep)
MIKE
Hi, Nikki. Mike. I don't think this is
working out. I think you're great, but
maybe we should just take some time off
from each other. It's not you, really.
It's me. It's only been six months...
NIKKI
(Live, in person. she picks
up the line)
Mike?
MIKE
Nikki! Great! Did you just walk in, or
were you listening all along?
NIKKI
(calmly)
Don't call me ever again.
MIKE
Wow, I guess you were home...
(click)
She hung up on him.
He's frozen.
He hangs up.
Beat.
He pulls the comforter off the futon and curls up in the
corner of the room.
