My husband laughs at me but as I kid I called it a Potato Bug.  He calls them Rolie Polie (is that spelled right?) Bugs.

I wonder if this is a regional thing, I grew up in the north and he's southern.

If it rolls up in a ball when you try to pick it up, it's a rolie polie -- that's the only name I've ever known.  We had them in NY and we have them in CO.

It's funny you call it that becuase you and I grew up in the same place, I would have figured we'd call it the same thing...there goes my regional idea.  LOL!!

a potato bug is like a big green cricket with a big ugly head on it. They are flat out nasty looking. That looks like a rolie polie, which probably isn't the real name, but seems like that's what we all call them.

Yeah woodlice - hated the things . . . I can see why they are called armadillos though, lol.

OMG!! I remember the first time I encounter a potato bug. I was barefoot and went outside to get something . When I was heading back in, it was right there infront of the door. I thought it was a scorpion or something. I freaked out. I was barefoot and had no way to get inside the house. I started screaming for my dad. I NEVER seen a bug like that. I didn't know if it could jump, fly , or what.  We beat the thing to death.

I would have screamed about 20 times if I saw that.  I know I wouldn't have calmly picked it up.  ;D

I was always told it was a "rolly-polly", I'd never heard any other name for it.

Another bug I hate is the cave cricket (or as some people call them wood crickets)

As kids we used to call them 'Slaters', otherwise known as Wood lice. There were heaps of these litters critters in our garden under the pots, in moist, leafy areas.

Definitely NOT ROLLY or POLLY<---- Those are black/grey and look like half a catepillar, and they roll as soon as you swat them, therefore you can "roll" them right out of your path, or front door as the case may be.
  Whatever that thing is, I'd rather NOT see it in front of me!
