Subject: Asking for Autographs

Written By: KKay on 05/19/06 at 8:42 am

have you gotten any good autographs? how did you ask?

I only ever asked for one:  and it was really a poor display of conversational skills on both our parts...
I was at a big ball where Chris Isaak played (see "best/worst date thread") and after the dinner there were like
6 or 7 girls standing out side the place so I took the menu off the table and went over, thinking it would be a good souvenier.
There was the cute nose, the silver sequin jacket..dreamy.

Karen's brain: Say something funny...no! not funny...nice...be nice...NO! someting about this party..go go.
Karen: We didnt get any bernaise sauce at our table.
Chris:  :o
Karen: Thanks.

I went home with a menu that was signed:
Whaaa?
Sauce?
Hope you had fun,
Chris

Fantastic  ;D ;D
I've never had the guts to ask for autographs because I know I'll just wibble like a loon. I got Andy Serkis(Gollum) but that was at a book signing so it doesn't really count.
My most embarassing star moment was with an actor called Jeremy Shepard (the bloke in Natalie Imbruglia's Torn video) I'm great with remembering faces but dreadful at forgetting peoples names which sets the scene.Anyway I joined a queue behind him at Paddington station and my brain's frantically going 'I know you don't I, I recognise your face, sh*t, sh*t, sh*t where from and what the hell is your name??, better just wing it '
So I beam at  him and go 'Hi, How ARE you? It's been ages' etc and he just looks a bit freaked out and goes 'Fine thanks and you?'
So it's not until about 5 minutes later my brain finally catches up and thinks 'That's right you're off the T.V and I don't know you at all'
I was mortified.

Once went to R4 recording at the 100 Club in Oxford Street London and BRIAN SEWELL the most stuck up Art Critic you could ever wish to meet, was there. I asked him for his autograph which he gave while looking down his nose at me   ;D
Also Dr Mark Porter the TV Doctor signed his name along with 'Look after your mind.' which made me feel paranoid

The only autographs I've ever gotten were the members of Bowling for Soup, which doesn't really count because my brother works for them and my son and I were backstage and they signed a TON of stuff for him.

My mom was working in the hospital when some relative of Steve Buschemi's was having a baby...
she told him, "No one knows who you are; but I do.  Sign these or I will tell everyone you're here."

She did good.  I have never gotten anyone's autograph.  Nor have I (as far as I can remember) ever had the opportunity (or created the opportunity).  Until now, I've never really thought about it.    ???

I have missed EVERY opportunity to get a person's autograph.

After my grandfather died, my mom went to the country duo The Judds concert. It was important because their song ("Grandpa") was played at the funeral. I didn't get to go because it was a school night. My mom had the luck to meet Wynnona Judd and tell her about what had happened (this was after Naomi Judd was diagnosed with Hepatitis...a close relative to what my grandfather had died of). Wynnona signed something for her. :P

Two years after that incident, I was supposed to go to a concert (I had won tickets and backstage passes) with a friend. I didn't get to go because she flaked on me.

When I was 16, I went to an oldies concert. Not wanting to miss the action going on, I stayed put while my mom went to the restroom. And...you guessed it, one of the performers was outside signing autographs.

So I resorted to buying autographs off of eBay...with the proper documentation, of course. I have a Rolling Stone magazine signed by all the members of Linkin Park and a signed pic of John Cusack. :) I also have Steve Young's autograph that was given to me by someone.

I have three stories to tell regarding Paul McCartney and Cliff Richard.

1) During the mid 80's, I saw Paul McCartney walking down Dean Street in London, and in those days I never acquired autographs, so I let him pass by.

2) While wating for a friend outside Broadcasting House, the home of BBC Radio. With my back to the Zebra Crossing outside it, I sensed people crossing the road, but never paid attention to them. It was not the group of four people were inside, I could see throught the window that one of them was Cliff Richard and was out of reach for an autograph.

3) Last year I was told by my friend (the same friend as above), that he saw Paul McCartney walking down St John's Wood High Street near to Lord's Cricket Ground. He did not make an attempt for an autograph.

Oh yeah, autographs. Got John McEnroe's a few years back at an exhibition at Royal Albert Hall.  Clumsily nearly fell over a bunch of sound equipment in my haste to get to him as he was exiting court. Don't think I (or anyone of the public) was meant to be there. He heard the noise, gave me a look of 'you can't be serious' then signed. Don't think he was too impressed when I asked him if Bjorn Borg was around .... that I was after his autograph too. Actually, I wanted it FAR more than John's. Actually got it later, AND shook the great man's hand !  8)

Think I got Tom Baker's many years ago .... (a former 'Dr. Who').

I am lead to believe that John McEnroe is difficult for autographs, like Neil Armstrong.  JM will only sign his biography.

I got The Incredible Hulk's (Lou Ferrigno) autograph. We were in Cleveland, OH for the marathon (my dad is a runner), and it just so happened to be this body builder competition at the hotel we were staying at. We were getting ready to check in, and as we carried out bags to the hotel, my mom noticed him. We went right up to him and my mom goes, "Excuse me, are you Low Ferrigno?"...and he replies, "Yes, I am". He was really nice, and he autographed a few post cards that we had purchased.

Back in the 70s/early 80s, my mom got OJ Simpson to sign a few 8x10s of himself for us (remember, this is when he was still popular!)

My daughter and I got Mark Curry's autographs last year when he MC'd the Step Show.  Wasn't impressed with him at all.

I have a picture of Monty Brown holding Micah when she was a baby.  Don't know if this counts for anything because it is before he became "famous" (he went on to play in the NFL and is now affiliated with some professional wrestling organization--last I heard he went by the name "Alpha Male"--I obviously know less than nothing about pro wrestling).

I have Jack Gilford's autograph. For those of you who are saying, "Who?"-he was the blind guy in the movie Caveman and Coocoon. He also used to do commercials for Cracker Jacks and several other shows/movies.

I also have Mary Jo Catlett's autograph. Again, some of you will say, "Who?" She played Pearl-Mrs. Garrett's replacement on Diff'rent Stokes. She also is the voice for Mrs. Puff on SpongeBob. And many, many other shows/movies.

In the 70's I would send letters to sports teams and ask for players autographs, most teams would oblige
and send me an autographed picture, probably signed by the batboy but signed none the less.

I stood in line for a soap opera star's autograph for my daughter, I was the only guy in line, talk about feeling
funny. I didn't even know who the guy was, I still don't know but his name is Josh Morrow.

Other than those instances I've only collected 4 other autographs.

Keith Emerson
Greg Lake
Carl Palmer

Outside of their hotel in Philadelphia. I didn't ask for their autographs, I was talking to them for about a half hour,
People began to realize who I was talking to and started to gather around. They signed a paper, handed to me
and went into the hotel.

Nick Varner...Pro Pool Player

In a pool hall owned by Eddie Sheehan, another pro player. I only asked for his autograph to start a conversation
It worked, I wound up getting a mini lesson on the art of the bank shot.

Ron Jeremy ?  :o

He's that academy award nominated actor that's appeared in all those fine educational documentaries ?  ??? Think he might have been in one or two with another fine actor .... John Holmes. I think they managed to finally fit him in his coffin (or at least, parts of him !  ;D ).

Yeah, I think I might have one or two of those 'documentaries' in my collection.  :-X

How that guy did as well as he did though (not that I'M  jealous  >:( >:( ).  To me, he's nothing to look at .... actually looked a bit of a fat slob,  ...  and when I did notice his face coming up a fair bit (and that's not all !  :P) ... I'd think .... oh, there's that butcher looking guy ??? ..... AGAIN !    ::)
