Subject: inthe00s as therapy?
Written By: Buckinghammm on 04/12/06 at 11:27 pm
After a while here... I've come to realize that some people seem to come to this board for therapy.
Everyone's trying to pick each other up constantly.
People who's son got shot in the face get the same treatment as the ones who've had a minor headache for the past 10 minutes.
Are my observations true?

To a surprising magnitude, I would say yes, that is correct. I have been surprised by some of the topics which have ended up on here that are almost exclusively devoted to personal problems that I usually wouldn't associate with public fora.

Everyone: "Ohhhhh SNAP!"

;D Yes, but that's Howard, and everyone makes fun of Howard (sorry, but they do).
What about the more serious members? You know, like the ones that hated the becks thing? Because ONE DAY BECKS WILL BE BACK AND SEE THAT WE'RE ALL MAKING FUN OF HIM OMGZ WE'RE MAKING FUN OF SOMEONE!!!

For the most part I agree.
I think it's annoying how everyone has to give sympathies for the smallest things. I can understand if someone's family member died or if someone was hurt in an accident, but if someone has a sinus headache?? ::) ::) ::)

I'd tell someone IRL that I'm sorry they have a headache and offer a bit of advice, though ??? Or, are you talking about people who go on and on and on, almost like they're looking for sympathy?
Yeah, I think it's when I feel that people are trying to get sympathy also, there are certain people out there that have to give phony comments to anyone who's having a problem. I not saying that there's nothing wrong with telling a friend that you want them to feel better though. :)

I know that I've come here with a few problems, but most of them I keep to PM's. There are a couple of people that I've gotten pretty close to and I know they'll give me straight-up advice and not some phony BS....you know who you are ;)
I assume then that I seem like I'll give phony BS >:(
Nah, I'm just kidding...
Just needed something to post.

I've talked about some personal things on here too. On occasion I'll talk about stuff in the threads, but then if we never talked about anything personal this place could get pretty boring.

Same here. There have been a few times I have told my problems in the public forum but most of time, I PM two people actually with the personal stuff.

Actually, I see it opposite... people who have severe problems get one or two "Oh, I'm sorry!" remarks... people who say "Oh snap, son, my daughter got her permit!" get a ton of responses.
It depends on who you are and what you're saying.. the more people that can relate and the lighter the situation, the more response you get.

It's cheaper than seeing a psychiatrist, plus Tom Cruise isn't going to tell us that we are "glib" or "misinformed" if we use it.

Sometimes that phony stuff isn't really phony, it's more like a common courtesy, and friends do that when one is down. I don't come here for therapy, but I do come here to relax and laugh, because ya'll make me laugh a lot! ;D

Yeah, but when you have a problem.. at least for me, I know this... I don't want "courtesy", I want advice and sometimes a small dose of sympathy.

I think, in the past, some people have overused the privilege of using inthe00's as a form of therapy...by practically begging others to feel sorry for them, sending them PM's insisting that they post in their created threads and agree with them, making everybody listen to the same stories over and over again...etc...however, lately, I don't see that as much. Usually people will just mention something once or maybe twice (if there is some sort of an update)...but I don't see the whole, "pity me, woe is me" kind of thing too much anymore.

Anybody spring to mind, Erin? ;D
I view 'Inthe00s' as a big community and therefore share good and bad news depending on what's happening in my life. I went through a bad time about 6 or 7 months ago and it showed in my posts (I wear my heart on my sleeve even when I'm typing) and had to come away from the boards because I knew people didn't need to hear about it. The therapy began after I left them so I don't consider myself to use this place as an emotional crutch. :)
