Subject: Where would you rather live, the UK or the USA?

Written By: Trimac20 on 03/19/06 at 11:46 pm

Especially for those who live in either of these two countries, are you happy with where you live? Does the idea of moving to either of these countries appeal to you? Some of the pros, cons...

I could never leave Canada, but if I had to choose, I'd pick the UK.  They get all of the best new music 8)

I have lived and worked in a few different countries and I think so far I enjoy the US the best...I have not tried the UK, and we've discussed moving there...(that was along time ago) I am always up for trying a new culture, location.

I prefer the U.K. I love visiting the U.S but I wouldn't want to live there full time.

I've never been to the US (always wanted to go) but I hear it's a bit like Australia in terms of streets, houses, suburbs.etc which, in many ways, I would expect it to be since we copied so many urban design principles from the yanks. But for those who have lived in both countries, how do you think they compare in these aspects?

Ah Jules.. they said they wanted to see the UK.. not London  ;D

For those who've never been, London really isn't a fair example of England.

Many towns in England are exceptionally old, many in fact were Roman towns, just visit London and see the actual City of London the streets are narrow and I dare say some are probably still cobbled (although I wouldn't be too sure).
Places like York still have many narrow cobbled streets.
This makes city traffic difficult and many planners have had to build what are called 'Ring Roads' around the city. It's rare to see an English city in a grid pattern as opposed to most American city's which are almost all set up as grids.

Oh STOP!  ;D  London is filled with millions of tourists just as New York is, it's were everyone heads first - unfortunately (especially in Summer - you can't bloody move for tourists)
If I had my way I'd show them the beautiful Northumbrian coastline and countryside in the north of England were I'm from!!!

If the Mr. Paul in the above sentence is me, then he suggests you avoid London...

There's much better places to head for, IMHO...

That sounds... really cool, actually.

Not to build, but just how that must look....

There are Paul I agree but London is quite funky when you're not there all the time - anyways this is all hypothetical. Personally I'd love to, and want to live in every main capital of the World before I get old...even when I get old!!

I would love to visit The U.K. but my destination may be a bit different than the norm.
I would like to visit the ancient battlefields, like Hastings,or take a tour of all the battlefields
during The War Of The Roses, maybe North Hampton,Ferrybridge,Towton or Tewkesbury.
If I am mistaken or this is not feasible I would hope my English friends will correct me.I plan
on going within the next few years.

I can't say for certain about the last three towns, but I'm sure Northampton would have a great deal of info' about the Wars...not sure whether you'd see any battlefields, but there would, I presume, be some kind of guided tour of where the battles took place, reconstructions and the like...

And, I do know for a fact that St. Albans does this ^ ...very historic place, that one...

Good on you for avoiding the 'Oh, let's go to London' trick and finding something alternative...

Hope the weather improves by the time you get here!

Thanks Paul,I forgot about St. Albans.
My brother went to England twice, He took the Beatles tour,Twice.
He said he liked his visit to London and he wants to return.
it sounds nice but my interest is in history.I know London has it's share
of history but it's just not what I am looking for.

Bosworth Battlefield still exists and some of the others from the English Civil War.  If you come at the right time you can see battle re-enactments at various places.
