wow...what did I do, in regards to searching for info on a particular music group/actor/subject...etc...prior to having the luxury of searching for it on the internet and getting an answer instantly?  It's like before the internet we were limited to magazines and research books in order to find out about someone or something famous....is it just me, or does it seem like a LONG time ago that we had to resort to those types of things? ???

I wasn't that much into music before but for general things I would read the enyclopedia, check out books at the library, read magazines and talk to friends, heck even listening to other's conversations was a good way to find out more information, but back then I had to resort to what my parent's listened to, which was mostly classical and latin music.

Vinyl records, cassette tapes and the radio to listen to music.

I read more and watched t.v. But the fact that there is usually garbage on t.v. now-it is a good thing. But I do need to read more. Oh yeah, I also used to do a crazy thing called GO TO SCHOOL!!! (Another thing I need to get back to). Curse you Al Gore for inventing this thing that I spend all my time on when I should be reading and going to school!!

One of the great luxiries in having the internet is something that I just noticed today ...

Many of the 80's albums and songs that I love were not big chart hits.  Because of this, they never saw much radio or MTV play back in the day.  With the power of the internet, I've been able to listen to sound samples and mp3's of many of these songs to know if I want to buy the whole album or not.  Back in the day, you couldn't do that. 

If i'm right, we got the net in 2004, so i'll have been 15. Um... can't really remember what I did when I was 15... nowt much, just hung around, watched tv. Oh, my Playstation 2 was also *gasps* used often! Nowadays it may as well just be a shelf ornament  ;D

I never really had to do research before the internet... but before we had a good connection, I just used Encarta Encyclopedia back on the old Windows 98 computer.

For Music, I just downloaded MIDI versions of a few songs from the 90s I really liked.. or I swiped CDs from my parents old collection.. they used to belong to one of those "10 CDs for a buck" clubs, so they bought almost every mainstream CD from the 1990s.

I never really had to do research before the internet... but before we had a good connection, I just used Encarta Encyclopedia back on the old Windows 98 computer.


Oh christ, yeah! How could I forget Encarta?! It came free with the old Windows 95 PC we got back in '96 (Which later got updated to 98). I can just remember EVERYONE at school using Encarta for everything! In the end, the teachers got sick of reading pages and pages of printouts of Encarta pages, so we got told to stop  ;D

Our Windows 98 computer would have been far too slow to run the internet, so we got a new PC shortly before connecting.

I also used Grolier Encyclopedia back when I had a Macintosh in the mid 90's. Also don't forget that Cliff notes were popular at the time, and many students were caught cheating their reading by consulting these references.

Our Windows 98 was pretty awesome.. very fast. It had the Encarta on it... I used it for most of my research, also went to the town library then and again.

Apparently, I was the only one who ever used Encarta, cause our teachers said most of our papers sucked, and they took a few class periods one day to show us how to use Encarta.. I'd been using it for ages.

My Windows 95 was awful. It kept crashing. One time, (and this is no joke or exageration), I opened up a new document in Microsoft Word, pressed 'T' and the whole computer froze. Stopped working completely, had to turn it off by the mains. That's just one of many examples I could give of how retarded our old PC was, but i'd be here all night listing them.

We also got shown (quickly) how to use encarta in our Open Day (When they show year six around, give them a taster of "big school" life), but likewise, I also had a pretty good idea of how to use it.

On the bookselves we had many volumes of The Encyclopedia Britannica resting heavily waiting to be used for homework and information. Now, to use the Encyclopedia Britannica Online only part information is available unless a fee has been paid for.

We didn't get the internet until about 4 years ago, or so. I spent a lot of my time outside, with my neighbor. Hm.. Haven't talked to her in about 5 years.. I think she got the internet, too. I talked on the phone a lot. Ha.. I could actually hold a conversation on the phone back in the day..
