I wouldn't say there is such a thing. There are many, many fine songs out there.

Um... probably a song with universal appeal.. don't know what a good example would be, though.

If I had to give my personal opinion, I'd say the best song ever written was "The World At Large" by Modest Mouse.

I just simply cannot narrow it down to just one song...there are far too many to do so.

"American Pie" by Don McLean is one of the more brilliant songs... although it wouldn't even make my personal top 500.

I think it's brilliant because decades later people are still arguing over the meaning and trying to "solve the puzzle". :D

I can't give my complete loyalty to just one song, it wouldn't be fair to the others that have been so good to me throughout my life. So I will name 1, but only for the sake of the post and this one could be changed at any given time as emotions, attitude, personality needs dictate.
