I am currently watching that Dateline special where they catch online sex predators who actually have the nerve to try to meet up with someone they think is like 12 or 13 years old, but to their dismay...it ends up being a decoy....and they are caught on camera, and then arrested. A lot of these men that showed up ended up being sexual predators who already have had a criminal record for that kind of thing....and other men were all walks of life (old, young, prestigious, etc.).

My dad used to live next door to a guy who was arrested for child pornography.  I only ever met the guy once, but he seemed like a real nice guy.  It's always the ones you least suspect  :-\\

Ok I'm going to play Devil's Advocate here. I am all for catching perverts and pedophiles , and the dateline show was pretty effective.  I have just one little thing to say though. I have been to the Perverted Justice.com website and  have read through some of the chat logs. Some of these decoys  do a pretty good job of baiting these guys or egging them on. Now I'm not saying that they (the pervs)  aren't wrong for what they are  doing. IF they weren't up to no good, they would exit the minute they hear the age. They most definitely are in the wrong.  But if you go to the website, ( I actually like the website, have it bookmarked and check for pervs in my home state  frequently. ) these '12 or 13 yr old boys/girls' will mention tht they like older guys, they are  into sex, they like to party,  etc.  I guess I'm just saying it's a fine line between  entrapment and vigilantes.  But hey, I suppose whatever gets them off the street right?

Hmm... well, sounds like they were looking for pedophiles. It's comforting that the system works so well. The internet is a huge place, but the world is far bigger. It may seem like there's a lot of these people, but keep in mind, there are 6-7 billion people on earth.. how many honestly have internet access? And then, how many among that number are pedophiles? What they're doing is wrong, but I wouldn't worry.

If it was between two "adults" then you would have entrapment. Because these sickos were basically soliciting children, the entrapment defense strategy goes out of the window, especially b/c they show intent (e.g. alcohol, condoms) when they appeared.

You are right. If they go so far as to try and meet up with someone , entrapment is out the window.
What about the average slob that's sitting at home  on his/her (don't want to be gender biased) computer  living out their "sick" fantasies on the computer..? I know! >:(  That's why the one that was on the other night was better, as the cops were waiting outside to take them off to jail.  You are right though, they just keep going back and doing the same stuff over and over again. There were even a few repeat offenders that STILL showed up after already getting busted by the very same website (www.pervertedjustice.com) that was busting them all over again. ::) It's just so gross.
