Subject: Historic vases smashed in stumble

Written By: Philip Eno on 01/30/06 at 1:32 pm

A stumbling visitor to a top museum has destroyed a set of priceless vases which stood on a shelf for 40 years.

The 300-year-old Qing vases were among the best known artefacts at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.

The visitor is said to have slipped on a loose shoelace and fallen down a staircase bringing the vases crashing down as he tried to steady himself.

Now why didn't they have them locked up in a glass case or something?  ::)

Why am I suddenly reminded of those old Archie Comics where Archie was always accidentally knocking over vases in Mr. Lodge's house ;D

And after he fell, he probably said, "Oops".

That is a shame.

I am sooooo nervous when I am in crystal/glass shops and museums are even worse.  I would not want to live if it had been me....but these things happen sometimes, and they probably should have secured them a bit better.

Well, yeah, he probably said a few other "colorful metaphors" as Spock calls them.

I feel sorry for the guy who tripped.  It's like, "Oops...!  I just smashed your display of priceless vases!  :-["

I think my first reaction would be to get up and run as fast as I could out of the building.

I wonder if this really was an accident?  I mean those vases are rather ugly.  Wouldn't take much to accidentally trip and knock them over ;D

It sounds like something I'd do, I'm Miss Grace personified.  ;)  I'm the only person I know that consistantly falls *up* stairs. (oh and a few times have fallen down stairs as well).

How awful for museum employee's and also the visitor who had such a huge blunder?  I'm sure they both feel terrible. He'll probably end up gettin a lawyer and suing the museum for a slip and fall accident.  >:(

Don't feel bad. I fall "up" stairs too. I usually get tripped by cats tho, or I am walking so fast that I miss the step and bruise a leg or knee.

Back to the topic tho, even "priceless' art is valued at something for insurance purposes ...Isn't that how it works?

These vases have now been been repaired on put on display again, but in a place that is away from the patrons of the museum.

Not the original accident, unless the security cameras were switched?
