Subject: How to Survive a Heart Attack When Alone

Written By: bookmistress4ever on 01/23/06 at 12:15 pm

Saw this on one of my geneology message boards, and even though, it's a downer, I thought it might be useful information - just in case.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

From the Nursing Department here at Kent

Since many people are alone when they suffer
a heart attack, without help, the person whose
heart is beating improperly and who begins to
feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

Your CPR instructor probably never told you
how to help yourself.

What to Do??

Do not panic, but start coughing repeateldy and vigorously.

A deep breath should be taken before each
cough, the cough must be deep and prolonged,
as when producing sputum from the chest.

A breath and a cough must be repeated about
every two seconds without let ups until help
arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack
victims can get to a hospital.

Tell as many people as you can. It could save
lives. Don't ever think you are not prone to
heart attack. Nowadays due to change in
life style, heart attack is found among people of
all ages.

Be a friend, pass the message.

As I actually do live alone, that could be very useful...

...tho' I hope I never have to use it!

Thank you...

I was also told on another website that I'd posted this on,

When you have chest pains, also take an aspirin (just one) as it thins out the blood and helps (for some reason).

Also found this (sorry if I tend to ramble on this subject)

Heart attack warning signs differ for men and women

Heart attacks are not always sudden and intense. Knowing how to recognize the onset of a heart attack, as well as how the symptoms differ between men and women, can ultimately save your life or the life of someone you love.

Men often experience the "classic" symptoms of chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, fainting, and lightheadedness. While these symptoms can appear in women, it's more common for women to experience indigestion, backache, dizziness, fatigue, and numbness.

Learning to recognize each of these symptoms as a warning sign of an impending heart attack can make all the difference. Women underestimate the severity of their symptoms too often, and by the time they seek medical attention, the damage has already been done.

If you experience chest pain and/or a combination of any of the other symptoms, get to a hospital immediately.

Sigs brother had a heart attack and never knew it!  He started having symptons went to is doctor and when they checked him out the found some sort of scarring or something that indicated that he had previously had a mild heart attack.  Wierd.
