C'mon, I know some of you have used other messsageboards, don't lie.  It's ok, I do it too (shock!)  Actually, I run two others, but they're not popular like this one (very narrowily focused, so that's why).

Someone mentioned an arcade, and surprise, it got installed.  So if you can think of anything else that you might like to use here, let me know.  I can't promise I can do it, but it never hurts to ask.

Would you believe a messageboard I once belonged to had a sex room?  You have to be atleast 18 to be able to access it, otherwise it doesn't appear on the forum.  In there, they post all kinds of naked pictures, videos, all smut.  That is one thing I do not miss.  LOL

Oh, a biography section in profiles.

That actually gave me an idea:

Remember Nastypenguins (Whistledog won't, but others might)? I think maybe adding an "Anything goes/sex chat area" onto this board but making it 18+ and you have to select whether you want to show it or not (default is off). Of course pictures, etc will be disabled so it doesn't turn into a porn board.  ::)

And the adding of more smilies would be great!  :)

A board I used to belong to that had an arcade ... whenever you went into the arcade, It showed on the left hand side (and in your profile) what Arcade Awards (aka top scores) you had.  It was handy because I always knew when I'd lost a top score, so I could go right to that game and try to get my score back.  LOL

The only thing I can think of is to maybe have a "Mythreads" type thing that we can put our favorite threads in, so that if they end up back on page 5 or 6 and we think of something we want to post in them, we don't have to go searching for them... we could just click on "Mythreads" (or whatever it would be called) and it will give us a list of the threads we have saved there...and then we can just click on them.

I don't think that is a good idea... I really hate when I go to a website and it starts automatically making sounds or playing music... it startles me, and also sometimes Im on here when my husband is sleeping... although I guess it would be ok if there were an option to shut off the sound if we don't want to hear it.

I think it would be cool if there was an option to "unsubscribe" from a thread.  There's nothing worse than clicking on the new replies to your posts link and having to weed through all the threads you're not interested in anymore.

To all of you who said bigger avatars. While this may sound pretty cool, there are some of us who still have dial-up.  ::) With bigger avatars, pages would take FOREVER to load (like it does with the picture threads).  So PLEASE keep that in mind.

Different page background/themes to choose from would be nice.  8) This forum's pretty much been the same with no option for that since the beginning.

Bigger Signatures/Avatars: no.  They waste a lot of bandwidth, I've used other boards that have them, and they are really distracting.  If you are on dialup, you can disable them in your forum profile though. 

50s avatars:  I don't even have decades other than the 80s >grin<  Most people don't use the stock ones, but if someone gave me a bunch to put up, I'd do it.

"Unsubscribe" from a thread:  I've thought of that before myself.  Not sure what that would take, I'll have to see if anyone's done it yet or not.

Emoticons with sound:  I despise sites that play any kind of noise when I visit them.  Way too distracting.

"Mythreads" type thing that we can put our favorite threads:  Neat idea, I like that one, kind of like how the "watch this item"  on ebay works

"R" rated / "X" rated section:  It would never be on the same site as inthe00s if I did it again.  Both myself and the server physically reside in the US, and the laws in this country have been getting progressively stricter in regards to the adult material, to a point where I don't think I want to deal with any possible problems that might arise from it.  It would need a very, VERY serious approach to verifying identity (like photocopy of driver's license, etc) that would take a lot of work.  I'm even nervous about whatfreaks lately (at least that resides on a Canadian server)

More smilies(emoticons):  There's a 300+ gallery http://inthe00s.com/smilies/ you can use.  They can get a little annoying at times, but people here tend to be decent about not abusing them.  If you have one you want to use, I can always upload it to the site.

Journal/BLOG:  Are people interested in just putting more personal info under their profile, or a seperate web page/blog type of thing?  It's too VERY different things from a coding point of view.  I think it's relatively easy for me to punch out big text fields people could put stuff in (like a personal history). If people wanted to keep a running journal (this is how today went type of thing) that might be a little more involved, and I'd want a firm estimate from people who think they'd do it on a regular basis before I invested the time.

Audio clips:  Too scared of the problems the RIAA would pose if people began posting mp3s. I know the post your voice thing was neat, but not sure what the other "non-infringing" applications might be.  It's easy enough for me to enable posting audio clips, but I have a feeling that I'd spend a lot of time working as "enforcement cop". The RIAA has no problems chasing 70 year old gradmothers, so I'm sure they'd have no issue with going after me.

Arcade Awards in profile:  Probably going to happen.  I've seen the code to do it, just haven't tried it yet. With some of the crashing issues the site has seen lately, I'm holidng off until I can be certain the arcade isn't responsible (I don't think it is, I don't even think it's the board software so much as the software on the server that it relies on).

Different page background/themes  Certainly possible, the biggest hurdle for me is time.  Everytime the new software comes out, I have to change all the themes to include the extra functions and the ads in each seperate theme.  Then it all has to be tested on top of it.  Lately I'm just trying to keep up with the current software due to the new features being released. There's actually a new default theme for this software that looks pretty different, which some people might like (though it's very bandwidth heavy).  Most of the themes for this software though, use tons of images to make fancy buttons which in my opinion violates good site design.  If it's text, it shouldn't be a graphic image that has text in it. 

Can I just say that this messageboard has way more useful extras than the other two boards I visit with any regularity.  I've been trying to get one of them (the site that actually listen to its members) to install some of the features we have here such as spell check, reply with quote when you've already started to type a reply, personal message link under avatar (rather than opening the profile), etc.

I'd like bigger avatars...but that's all I could think of.

I've stuck with the boring grey for the simple reason that it's easy to read type against.  There's tons of discussions sites that are done in white on a black background that are near impossible to read for a long stretch of time.

When this current version of software that's running is "final released" (the version running right now is still a "release candidate" meaning it's not fully released yet), I'll add the ability to switch between a couple templates, with different color schemes.

It's been asked for several times on the software creator's forum, but for some reason it never makes it in there.  Other packages allow it too, which makes the omission all the more unusual.

I can enable that again, but I'd prefer not to. 

I disabled it because people don't know enough to only quote the part of the message they are responding to.  So you end up with 200 lines quoted, and a one line "me too" response.  Granted, we still get that even without the nesting, but it's not nearly as bad.  Plus you have to be really careful when editing a quote, otherwise the post becomes unreadable if you remove part of one of the nested quotes.

I've always thought that if you needed to know more context about a response, the person reading it should go back a few pages, or click on the link at the top of the quote to read the original message.

The people who work on this software seem to avoid popups  of any sort (aside from the spell check, there's almost none on here). 

It also would add extra work for the server to fetch all that info.

Geeky tech stuff follows:
The best way from a presentation stand point, is to pre-fetch it for every thread and send it down with the page. Although I suppose it could be done with AJAX as you hover over each thread, but still, a lot of work.  What basically happens is a query similar to that of grabbing and reading the whole tread, so from the server's point of view, almost the same as if you had gone in there and just read it anyways.

So yeah, I'd have to write it myself, and it looks like it's complex enough that it would take quite a bit of time to do.

oh, and one of the things people haven't asked for, but I will probably do, is a front page for the site.

Something like a little mission statement, system news, that type of thing, with links to the boards and the most recent threads.

I have to say Chuckie - I send people here to look at how I think a message board should be built !

It has so many amazing features that other boards just dont even come close to.

And while I have never been a fan of GREY - I will agree with you that for a board where a lot of time is spent reading - the grey is very easy on the eyes.
