I took piano lessons for a few years--I'm..Okay at it. Took drum lessons for a while--sucked at that. Tried to teach myself guitar, but I can only play chords.

I don't think any of you youngsters would be an expert in this area, but I play a mean classical piece!

I'm still no closer to getting in a band, and I couldn't do solo work. It just seems a shame that I can play all this stuff and it's going to waste...  :(

I took private lessons for two years when I was younger (1991-93) and then took a piano class in my freshman year of high school (1994-95) for the first semester. After a six-year hiatus, I took a piano class at community college (Spring 2001); I was one of only six people who stayed in the class for the entire semester!! :o I periodically play now and then.

I can play the piano. I had lessons as a child and my mom's a piano teacher.

My dad (who could have been a concert pianist in his heyday) was supposed to give me lessons as a kid. He wasn't too keen about teaching me. The most I learned was Frere Jacques.  ::)  Then in 5th grade, I took flute lessons in school. My big "masterpeice" was Mary Had a Little Lamb". But then I moved and the new school I went to didn't offer flute lessons. Then in high school, I took guitar lessons. The guy who "taught" it was almost as bad as my dad about not wanting to teach. I had ONE lesson (but got a credit for it  :-\\ ). But I did teach myself how to play "Down in the Valley" on the guitar. Can't remember now.  So after trying to learn to play 3 intruments (I really wanted to learn), I gave up. I do play the keyboard just a bit-by ear and usually with one hand.  ::)

I wanna try my hand at drums again, wasn't bad at 'em before.

I took drum lessons for 7 years ('76 to '83)  I played
tympanis in a small orchestra in the early '80s and I also
sat behind the kit for a Cole Porter night at a banquet hall
but I wasn't making any real money at it so I gave it up.
I also took piano theory for a year or two because I wanted
to write music but that didn't pan out either.

Haven't played one in yonkers, but I'm quietly confident that I can still pull a tune out of a saxophone (any variety...)

Ditto with a clarinet, oboe, bassoon...any woodwind, in fact, barring a flute...

And I can busk along on piano, but only if the tune's in an easy key...

In addition to playing the piano, I can also play an electric keyboard (which has a layout just like a piano, only not as long). To add, when I was younger, I could play music by ear, figuring out the melody of certain songs (very little pop though) and actually getting it right. But playing the piano is more than just playing the melody; the chords and all that are important too.

What I mant was, when I heard certain music, I could easily figure out the notes to play. I can still do that now, with some pop songs, but I have no desire to ever play any of those in full.

I used to be able to play Axel F by Harold Faltermeyer on the keyboard.  I could evne play the Indiana Jones theme.  That was about it though.  I never had a big enough interest in the keyboard to pursue it any further.  I wish I had of had the initiative though.  I could have been the next Elton John.  Who knows?

^ Same here. My mom says I have great timing and my playing flows real well, and even though I LOVE music, I just can't find the time to focus on it long enough to grasp it the "correct" way. I still have trouble reading notes, but I can get by without referring to another source. I wish I had taken advantage of playing the piano at a more serious level.

I've been able to read musical notes since I was little. I remember the mnemonic tool for remembering the lines and spaces on the treble ("G") clef: Every Good Boy Does Fine, and the word FACE. For the bass clef, which contains all the tones below Middle C, you can remember the lines by: Good Boys Do Fine Always, and for the spaces: All Cows Eat Grass.

I did, for a short period take guitar lessons at school, but I didn't even get to learn the basics and I quit. Apart from that, nothing i'm afraid

I've tried that in the past. It's hard to play a piano keyboard upright and press the chord buttons. Although I'm pretty good with melodicas!

I've played the trumpet for 3 years, and am just now starting to sound decent.  Before I played the trumpet, I played mallet percussion for two or three years.  I didn't really like it...I only got into it because I wanted something easy.

I also play the piano...about 8 years now.  :o  And although everyone seems to think I'm good at it, I beg to differ.  I haven't touched a piano in six months, and even before my hiatus, I never could play very well.  I'll probably switch trumpet only sometime soon--that's where I'd really like to excel.  Being a good pianist, while it'd be nice, just ain't my first priority right now--I barely have time to practice the trumpet.

Wow. This is an old thread. I never really practiced the violin, but I'm getting good at piano.

I play guitar, although I'm no virtuoso. I mostly taught myself with pointers on the side from others.
