My top five would have to be: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, White Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, Away in a Manger, and Silent Night.

That time of year already...?!!
From the list, 'Silent Night' for its poignant use during the 'Christmas Truce' in the 1914-18 war...
Not on the list, the two colossal biggies (in Britain, at least) of Christmas 1973...'Merry Xmas Everybody' by Slade and 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday' by Wizzard...
Both songs are rightly regarded as Christmas standards over here - and it's hard to imagine a festive period without hearing 'em at least once!
Yet they were both recorded during the summer of that year...!!

I played Bob Cratchit for the school play.
When we modified it (to remove the talking) for the Leicester Haymarket production we had to cut out the beginning with Bob asking Scrooge for the day off. So then I played a smaller part of a musician in the Christmas Past scene and was in the crowd at the funeral for Christmas Future

Away in a manager is probably my favourite. My mum is as big a christmas freak as i am and on the way to school when i was a little boy she would have christmas tapes and we'd sing along to them. Away in a Manager was probably the only nice slow song on there but it was the first one i learnt.
I love silent night as well.
My favourite Non Hymn like christmas song is without a shadow of a doubt Fairytale of New York by Kirsty McCall and The Pouges. It's probably one of my favourite songs ever.
Slade.. just.. because it wouldn't be christmas without Noddy Holder screaming IT'S CHRISTMAS!

Thanks for the jolt of memory!
I was in a children's choir at church and for 3 years we sang away in a manger for the pageant. I love it for the simplicity but feeling. And the Christmas song...ie chestnuts over an open fire, etcetera. (?) Oh, but if you have the older records by Burl Ives or Perry Como they put out some memorable renditions of favorite christmas songs still played today on radio at holiday time.

As far as "traditional" favorites go -- I love Jingle Bells (especially that "laughing all the way" part!!), Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, and Santa Claus is Coming to Town.
Those tend to be pretty "feelgood".
Some good remakes have been done too, especially in the 80's: "Christmas All Over Again" from Tom Petty (not too far from his normal style), "Jingle Bell Rock" from Hall & Oates (which even had its own music video).
The Irish Rovers' 80's-tinged pop "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" is probably the best original song in recent years. Loved the music video too!
We can't forget Weird Al's two demented originals - 1986's "Christmas at Ground Zero" and 1996's "The Night Santa Went Crazy". ;D

It's Christmas in Heaven,
All
the children sing,
It's Christmas in Heaven,
Hark hark those church bells ring.
It's Christmas in Heaven,
The snow falls from the sky...
But it's nice and warm and everyone
looks smart and wears a tie.
It's Christmas in Heaven,
There's great fil
ms on TV...
`The Sound of Music' twice an hour
And `Jaws' I, II, and III.
There's gifts for all the family,
There's toiletries and trains...
There's Sony Walkman Headphone sets
And the latest video games.
It's Christmas it's Christmas in Heaven!
Hip hip hip hip hip hooray!
Every single day,
Is Christmas day.
It's Christmas it's Christmas in Heaven!
Hip hip hip hip hip hooray!
Every single day,
It's Christmas day.

I just have the original Red covered single. I think at one time it was considered the best selling Christmas single? I thought I read that somewhere, but maybe it was just some dj making it up. I don't know if I am still in posession of the 45 though. It would be at my mom's house, if A.) she didn't give it away, she's notorious for giving away my things, but keeping stuff I don't want and foisting it on me. ::) But, I guess if I *really* wanted it I would have taken it with me when I moved out. :-[ or B.) When my first husband and I had to move back in to my parents home (temporarily), my (now) ex-husband got rid of alot of my stuff from my childhood. So, it might have not made the cut in that either.
Irregardless, it's probably not worth much other the nostalgia anyways. I remember the flipside of the 45 was interviews from all of the participants of that recording session.

I basically liked all the songs that were featured in Christmas cartoons like:
Holly Jolly Christmas and Silver and Gold sung by Burl Ives from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
One foot in front of the other sung by...um...the Winter Warlock ;D in Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Also, the themes of Heatmiser http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Set/9051/ and Snowmiser from The Year Without a Santa Claus.
"The little drummer boy" from the Bass/Rankin cartoon "The little drummer boy"
Even liked "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch" from The Grinch who stole Christmas.
I'm a sap for Christmas animation. lol

I forgot about "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" (and it's right on the list, LOL).
John Cougar-Mellencamp did a good spin on that (I'm honestly not sure if that was his own song, or a cover) in 1987. I think there was even a music video for it too.
On VH1 in the early 90's, they'd always have a ton of holiday themed videos and movies around Christmastime. :)
I think "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" had been around for many years prior to 1987. The Ronettes did a version of it in the late 60's... and I'm sure it was around at least 10 years before that rendition.
I use to love watching those videos on VH1 on or around Christmas.. I chose that rather than Oprah (if it happened to land on a week day).

I like that one too. It originally appeared on the 1987 charity aid album "A Very Special Christmas" :)

For some reason, John Lennon's "So This Is Christmas" is, like, the most depressing song ever for me.

Fairytale of New York is about 1 of the only ones I can stand.

I just have the original Red covered single. I think at one time it was considered the best selling Christmas single? I thought I read that somewhere, but maybe it was just some dj making it up.
In the UK, the original Baid-Aid still remains the best selling Christmas single ever.
In America, it is "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby. It hit #1 three different times on Billboard, and re-charted every year but 1 between 1942-1962. It also became a hit again for the 20th time in 1998 :)

I think the real title to that is Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - recorded in 1971.

There are not many Christmas songs I like, except for these
- The classic Christmas standards: Joy to the World, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Silent Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,Deck the Halls, Do You Hear What I Hear?, The First Noel, stuff like that)
-- White Christmas - Bing Crosby
-- Merry Christmas, Darling - The Carpenters
-- This Christmas - Donny Hathaway
-- Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - Judy Garland
-- The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole
-- Chipmunk Song - The Chipmunks
-- A Charlie Brown Christmas (Linus and Lucy, Skating & Christmas Time Is Here) - Vince Guaraldi Trio
-- Sleigh Ride -- Alexander O'Neal (Christmas music to the tune of "Fake"!)
And if I'm in a good mood
-- A Wonderful Christmas Time - Paul McCartney & Wings
That's it.

I always liked the song, "We Need a Little Christmas"....it always reminds me of this little Christmas pageant that we did in elementary school.

White Christmas, Winter Wonderland, Rocking Around The Christmas Tree are all good
Not on the list, though, i'd have to go with all the christmas favourites, you know, Do They Know It's Christmas, Fairytale Of New York, I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, Merry Christmas Everyone, Happy Christmas (War Is Over). I'm starting to get sick to the back teeth of hearing bloody Wham, though

Seriously, if it's not George Michael warbling down the radio at work, it's the radio in the car, or it's on the music channels every 5 friggin' minutes
What the hell is wrong with people?!

I don't know. I hate it too when they play the same songs over and over again!

George Michael dominated Christmas of 1984 in the UK. Band-Aid was #1, Last Christmas was #2. Here's a little trivia: Last Christmas by Wham! did not even chart in America
