I am hoping to make a transfer within my company to where I can be home every night as opposed to being gone most of the week. Once this happens, I am seriously considering buying a Vespa-type scooter to commute back and forth to work (the one I'm thinking about gets 90 mpg and can top out at 55 mph.) But I wonder, if I'm putting around town on this thing, am I going to look cool like the kids in Quadrophenia or am I gonna look like a complete goob?
  (Not that this poll will affect my decision--I've pretty much made up my mind, and if people don't like my scoot then f*** 'em, but I am curious what y'all think.  ;))

THOSE scooters are cool... the ones that are like motorized skateboards with handlebars are dorky. 8)

See? That's just it. The "cool" factor of the Mods in Quadrophenia, IMO, is offset by the "dork" factor of Terry the Toad fumbling around with his Vespa in American Graffiti. That's what worries me some.  ;D

What if I run out of gas?

Today I went to a scooter dealership in Kansas which had a few of the models I'm interested (called a "Stella") on display. Except for the badging it was virtually indistinguishable from a 30 year-old Vespa. I've always kind of wanted one since I was a kid, and they were asking about $3000 for it. I'm thinking maybe next spring, when I get my tax refund back, I might go for it.

I think they are cool.  Heck, I want one.

I think it's alright.. not cool, but I'd use one if I couldn't afford a car.. for short trips, anyway.. not going on vacation in that or anything, but I'll drive it around town.. go for it, I say.
