Subject: Fair or Exhibition
Written By: whitewolf on 08/17/05 at 7:52 pm
Does anyone still have a fair that only comes to your area once a year?
We have an exhibition once a year and it's here now(for a week), can't wait to take the kids.

Yes, we have one... it used to be two weeks a year, but due to the fact that it attracted gangs and usually resulted in problems, it is now only for one weekend... and way too crowded for me to even bother trying to get through the traffic, let alone park and go inside.

we used to be able to enter the competitions, but this year they cancelled them. all but the Great Canadian Scarecrow contest that is. I won three years in a row with my baked stuff and the last two years for the scarecrow contest.(not the typical scarecrows that anyone would think of)
the exhibition we have is an agricultural one, but it still has alot of fun rides.

Well, there's the Shippensburg Fair, held the last week in July annually. Nobody in the town cooks that week (except the people manning the fair booths). :)

We have an annual street fair that is in town every November for 3 days. It has had a Royal Charter to operate here since 1222 or something like that.

Sorry, I should have explained. It has been written that "Australians love contractions" :) Therefore :
Exhibition = Ekka
Football = Footy
Sandwich = Sanger
etc etc

Our local 'shebang' is The Danson Festival, normally held in July...
(Can't hotlink it, so you'll have to thump 'Danson Festival' into Google to see all the (yawn!) details...Main attraction? Darius! Says it all...!!)
Celebrating all that's great and good in Bexley, I'm amazed that they can stretch it over two days!

My eldest son spent all day there today with friends and had an absolute ball. He loved the human cannonball, the cattle and, of course, sideshow alley and the sample bag pavilion. I was shocked when he brought money home AND brought something for his little brother. ;) :)

The 'Celebrity Milking Competition' sounded 'interesting'...!
I could get some mileage out of that...but won't!

I love the Zipper....even went on it when I was first pregnant with my oldest.  Sadly, it's no longer at our local fairs :(
Well there's one sitting in the K-Mart parking lot across the street. If you come out here, I'll treat you to as many rides on it as you want!
http://www.ride-extravaganza.com/rides/zipper/zipper_06.jpgThe Zipper is the standard measuring stick to which all other "scary" rides are measured - if your body can handle two and a half minutes on the Zipper, you can handle any other ride on a carnival midway (with possible exception of its cousin - Turbo) The Zipper's 12 passenger cages are all about practicality - just large enough to encase two human bodies - side by side. - Not for the weak-hearted, certainly not for the claustrophobic!. No body-hugging safety restraints either, just a lap bar attached to the door, and some rungs to hold on to - tightly! (if you don't you're head will almost certainly come in contact with the steel mesh and bars in front of you!)
btw my kids said the Turbo was bad, they love the Zipper though. I HATE THEM BOTH :o

It's really just natural fun! You can get a high riding on the Zipper. I rode my bike over to the carnival last evening and decided I would ride the Zipper...maybe this week-end. Ceramics, if you ride it next time you see it, I promise I will too :)

In Oxford we have the St.Giles Fair every september.It is held right in the centre of the city so they have to close roads and reroute traffic for 2 days.Like Karen said about her local fair it is also really old with a charter from King James.It is the first weekend after the feast of St. Giles and has to be set up by sunset on the first day and gone by sunrise on the third.
In the town were I live we have a street fair before christmas every year.Last year they switched on the christmas lights and plunged the whole town into darkness ! Knowing our local council they probably tried to plug them all into a streetlight or something. ::)

I only go to fairs when I have the urge to get stabbed, shot or robbed. ::) I'm from California and most of the fairs in CA attract gangs and other trash. Everytime there is a fair you hear on the news or in the newspaper about someone being jumped or shot. Now I just associate fairs with scumbags.
I have been tainted and shall never go to fairs again. :P
