Subject: Depressing Songs

Written By: Indy Gent on 06/22/05 at 9:23 pm

These are the 25 most depressing songs according to The Guardian and the author of the book "I Hate Myself and Want To Die" (He lists 52 songs in his book).

http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/fridayreview/story/0,12102,1502655,00.html

Others that should have been in the:

"Emma"-Hot Chocolate (Title woman commits suicide)
"Rocky"-Austin Roberts (Title female dies of cancer)
"Timothy"-The Buoys (Title male gets eaten)
"Conversation (Jimmy, Jimmy)"-Conway Twitty (Conway ignores flirts from a young girl, so when he "comes to his senses", she marries his best friend)
"Photographs and Memories"-Jim Croce (Jim goes over old pictures of a love since gone.)
"Living Dead Girl"-Rob Zombie (for obvious reasons)
Just about anything by The Smiths, The Cure, Tori Amos, or Janis Ian.

So what other omission should be included here? :\'(

"Jed The Humanoid" by Grandaddy... about the first robot with emotion.. kills himself after being left alone for years

"Already Dead" by Beck.. just downright depressing

"Hate Song" by Daniel Johnston.. about hoping a girl kills herself and no one cares.

'Honey' - Bobby Goldsboro

Both of those were in Reynolds' Top 25.

I also found "Dear God" by XTC very disheartening. It's about this boy who becomes disenchanted with God, then grows up not believing in anything at all. Any song that describes a loss of faith is depressing in my book.

I'll See You In Hell- Voltaire... few people have heard this, but a good deal of the people I've shown this to tend to break into tears.. it's your classic breakup song, but not angry, like the title might imply... a very good, original song.

Yeah, I've got that single and actually like it because it talks to me about the religious insecurities I had growing up and feel the song to be one of protest rather than one of sadness.  :)

Hm...25 is hardly going to be definitive, so there's quite a few omissions...

'Mr. Zero' - Bob Lind/Keith Relf
'Goodbye To Love' and 'Solitaire' - Carpenters
'Ocean Deep' - Cliff Richard

Good songs all, but they're a little too 'close to the bone', so I rarely listen to 'em...

If it was a protest song, then Rick Partridge will have a lot of explaining to do. >:((
As for religious insecurities, God would understand that too. It's just that a lot of folks would rather (excuse the expression) burn in H*** than to try to make sense of why things happen like they do. And none of it is actually His fault. I'm sorry if the atheist population feels otherwise. (We can discuss this further in the political forums, if desired).
P.S. :This isn't aimed at you, Bobby, just those who chose atheism because it's easier to believe.

Believe me, I've spent my whole life trying to make sense.. and for a few moments from time to time.. it does make sense. But then that just fades and you can't understand why things happen anymore. So I gave up trying to figure it out. I used to feel spiritual {though non-specific} presence, but that feeling left me. I feel nothing divine.. essentially, anarchy.. nothing to stop any of us with the proper means.

And believe me, Atheism is NOT an easy choice.. You have to do a LOT of defending of your choice.

The Kingston Trio's "Tom Dooley"(about a condemned man)
Marty Robbins' "Streets of Laredo" (Gunfighter wins fight but loses his life.)
And for sheer audacity, Whale's "Into the Strobe" is about a woman who kills her abusive boyfriend, and doesn't bat an eye as she heads toward the police car (with strobe lights on, hence the title). The lyrics are strange to say the least ("I kiss my teeth, I'm gone"?), but you'll know the storyline.

And does anyone need to know what "Amelia" by Mission UK is about?

I said it 'feels' like a protest song because I left a religion feeling exactly the same way. That was my interpretation of the song and can identify with what it says. What it is may be a different matter.  :)

As for religious insecurities, God would understand that too. It's just that a lot of folks would rather (excuse the expression) burn in H*** than to try to make sense of why things happen like they do. And none of it is actually His fault. What is your point here? Is this a pro religion statement or a pro atheism statement?

P.S. :This isn't aimed at you, Bobby, just those who chose atheism because it's easier to believe.

No worries, Indy.  :)

I can tell you, Indy, that I have agnostic leanings which means 'I haven't got a clue'. For me, that is more easier to digest than both ends of the spectrum here. If you wish to have a go at me because I find this easier to believe, you are welcome without retalliation.  :)

I find it intriguing that one persons sad song is another ones happy song. I think that we come to a conclusion about a song totally because of how we feel when we first hear it or because of something that has happened prior to hearing it.

"This Time Imperfect" by AFI, the song made me cry the first 3 times I listened to it -wipes tears from eyes- oh so beautiful... And "The Great Dissapointment" by AFI because it shows Davey's loss of faith in his religion. Also "Silver and Cold" by AFI just because of the video and you'll know if you ever saw it. Davey is on top of a bridge about to commit suicide but decides to call Jade, Adam and Hunter so they can maybe talk things out, so while Davey is throwing his jewelery in the river/lake the rest of the guys are driving to the bridge but they crash, explode and die in there attempt to save Davey's life while he then decides that he doesn't want to really commit suicide... SUCH IRONY. The whole cd is depressing though because it's supposed to be about Davey dying and never being able to live again.  :\'( I know, I'm the only one here that could find it depressing but that's fine. AFI freaks forever.  :)

I like that one, but totally forgot about it till I was breezing through this post!

I first heard it as a kid in the late 80's when my mom bought the tape - it's from the 70's though. I think musically it's catchy in a jazz pop/rock kinda way, but lyrically it's sad. A guy whose bored and goes out drinking and gets into a car crash -- what it sounds like anyway!

"How Can I Live Without You" by Trisha Yearwood.

That song was big when a very close friend's baby was diagnosed with terminal cancer and died on her 4-month birthday.  Her mother was devastated, and so was I.  I had been over at the house visiting her one night (October 13) and she seemed to be fine.  I was gonna get her a little Halloween outfit for the 31st.

The next morning at 9:00 October 14th, somebody at work told me that she passed away early in the morning.  I refused to beileve it until the mother called and told me.  The worst news I ever received in my life.  :\'(

It's a thin line between depressing and sad, but here's a few for me (btw, I do like most of these even if the subject matter doesn't cheer me up!):

Another Day in Paradise - Phil Collins
She's Leaving Home - The Beatles
Think of Laura - Christopher Cross
How am I Supposed to Live Without You - Michael Bolton (actually almost anything from him, LOL!)
The One that You Love - Air Supply
I Saw it on TV - John Fogerty
One - U2
The End - Doors

-Ones that SHOULD depress me but don't:
That Was Yesterday - Foreigner (kind of melahcholy synths, but upbeat enough to not be "depressing")
Riders on the Storm - Doors (supposed to be creepy and gloomy - subject-wise it is, but I always enjoyed the sound of the song)
Invisible Sun - Police (politically depressing ballad, but the Police always had an anthemic pop sound)

The Unicorns do a song called "I Don't Wanna Die" at the start of their one album.. then end with "I'm Ready To Die".. which, might I add, is a very depressing song under the appropriate circumstances.. really only depressing if you agree with it. Then it is very.

Another depressing song: Daniel Johnston's "Almost Got Hit By A Truck"... it's very happy in tune, but it's actually about a small child who almost gets hit by a truck, and is actually upset it DIDN'T hit him... it's just friggin' miserable of a song from that point on.

just read some of the lyrics and see what I mean.

Daddy....ELP

It was a cold night in December
The snow lay on the ground
She was coming home from school one night
From the other side of town
It was getting late, there was something wrong
Then I heard the news
A TV Flash and by 9 o'clock
They'd found her socks and shoes

Daddy come and bring me home

I didn't know which way to turn
I was shaking like a leaf
I got into my car and drove
Searching every street
Has anybody seen her
Have you found my little girl
She's all I have, all I possess
And to me, she means the world

I can hear her calling
Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, when are you gonna bring me home

As time went by each silent night
We knew all hope was gone
We knew the light had flickered
From the eyes that once had shone
They caught a man in a bar one night
He confessed to what he'd done
He'd laid her body out in some dark wood
Just didn't know which one,
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home

I just couldn't leave her out there
Lying on her own
'Cause she belongs to me
And I belong to her
I know she rests in Heaven
With the angels on a throne
But now I hear her calling
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home
Daddy, Daddy come and bring me home
