Subject: Insomnia

Written By: ADH13 on 06/18/05 at 12:31 am

What do you do when you just can't seem to fall asleep??

do people really count sheep?

I try to think of songs/movies/etc that start with every letter of the alphabet (similar to some of the inthe00s board games) and sometimes I listen to the news on the radio and wait for them to say a word that starts with a, then b, etc.  I usually fall asleep during the long wait for a "q"

But I am looking for a couple new ideas... with this sudden change in weather it has been hot at night and it is taking me forever to fall asleep!

Heh, that's pretty much what it's always like for me! ;)

I've often tried to get myself to sleep and nothing of that nature works (probably 'cause if you're actively trying to fall asleep, you're still too "awake" to fall into a sleep).

In the summertime, I sometimes go for a jog around the townhouse complex to "tire" me out. Baths help too. Heck, sometimes even just sitting at the computer, or watching TV long enough will do the trick.

I haven't slept well for years. Since I started having back problems. I've tried everything, pills, changing positions, nothing works. So I usually just toss and turn all night.  >:(

When I can't sleep, I listen to music, read, or write.
Sometimes the home shopping network puts me to sleep, as well.

I have the odd rough night from time to time...

I find slipping on a Whitney or Sade LP normally sends me off!

Seriously, I've heard that herbal night-time remedies are pretty effective...I've never partaken myself (but should things get really bad...!!)

I have heard that warm milk helps, sort of like turkey.  I also heard a warm bath helps your body relax enough to fall asleep.  I think you need to do it a couple hours before bed though.

I listen to the radio sometimes when I'm having trouble sleeping.. it's kind of ironic that in the middle of the night, there are so many commericals for Tylenol PM, and other sleep-inducing drugs.

I try to go slowly through the alphabet really picturing each letter.  Each one in a different font and colour to the previous one.  Then I do the alphabet backwards using the same technique.  This method is useful if something is on your mind and it won't go away.  (either something you need to do the next day or going over something that happened that day).

If you are not asleep within 20 minutes or so of going to bed then you should get up and go to another room, find something to do and then go back to bed when you feel tired.  This is to keep your brain associating bed with sleep.  That's why people advise against having a TV in your bedroom.

I always find you get a better sleep when you go to bed tired (Stating the obvious here) rather than lying in bed trying to force yourself asleep which all it does is makes you stay awake longer. I agree with what Karen just posted. ^

As a clinically diagnosed Insomniac. The only thing that I do when i am having a severe attack is meditate. IT helps to center my thoughts. That eventually helps me to relax and I can fall asleep. Another thing I do is is turn to the classic rock station.

I tried counting sheep a few times.. the visual image of sheep jumping.. I paint it too vividly. I have the fence, the grassland, a small red barn.. weather.. I just elaborate too much. To kill the insomnia, I think about everything I want to think about until it's out of my head.. it's like I've gone through a checklist of things and people I need to think about before bed... either way, once I'm done thinking, I can sleep.

Well.. I'll go to bed now and get to sleep around 2:30-3:00.

It always takes a long time.

What i like to do is imagine myself in a wrestling match, or a football game, and play it out in my head. Eventually it just merges in to dream.

Sometimes i lay awake and come up with obscene things in my head. That's always fun. Another i do, is keep my eyes open as long as possible and then turn over and bury my head in the pillow.

Well, i bid you all a good night.

Cheerio.

It's back. >:(

I was doing really well for several months, but the last couple weeks I cannot seem to fall asleep.  I burned an 80 minute CD of all mellow relaxing music to listen to when I'm trying to go to sleep... and I've been having to start it over 2 or 3 times because I'm still awake when the CD ends.

I think I'm gonna have to pull an all-nighter one of these days... so that by the time I go to sleep, I'll be like a zombie, hopefully fall right asleep and get back on track again.

Deep in the bosom of the gentle night,
Is where I search for the light,
Pick up my pen and start to write,
I struggle a fight,
Dark forces in the clear moonlight without fear,
Insomnia.

I can't get no sleep.

I used to worry,
Thought I was going mad in a hurry,
Getting stressed, making excess
mess in darkness. No electricity,
Something's all over me, greasy.
Insomnia please release me,
And let me dream of making mad love to my girl on the heath,
Tearing off tights with my teeth.
But there's no release, no peace,
I toss and turn without cease.
Like a curse,
I open my eyes and rise like yeast.

At least,
A couple of weeks since I last slept.
Kept taking sleepers,
But now I keep myself pepped
Deeper still,
The night, I write by candle light,
I find in sight
Fundamental movement.

So when it's black
This insomniac
Take an original tack
Keep the beast in my nature under ceaseless attack.
I gets no sleep.

I can't get no sleep.

I have chronic insomnia too

Some things that work for me, although I don't do them every night:

Warm milk (I used to heat it on the stove, but hated the "skin" in the pan - what a pain to clean - now I just microwave it)

Once in awhile I'll take a Melatonin (it's found in the vitamin section) I take half the dose suggested - some nights it works better then others.  Some days I don't feel truly woken up until after noon.  So don't take it if you have to wide-eyed and bushy tailed immediately in the morning.

Hot bath - this works so well, I'll fall asleep in the bathtub - hubby is concerned he'll find me drowned someday.  :o  I think I'll be ok, just as long as I don't try to "fluff" the pillows/bubbles in the bath.

Sometimes I'll take an Aleve (or generic equivalent - Naxoproxin) and sit in my comfy chair in my living room and fall to sleep - sometimes I warm a wet towel in the microwave for 20 seconds - so far they haven't caught fire yet.  :o  and I'll put that on the back on my neck to relax my neck muscles that are tense.

What absolutely works for me, is I find something I REALLY want to watch on television, I don't bother setting up my VCR cause I know I'll be awake, sit down in my chair and fall asleep and wake up just as the program ends.  Works every time!  >:(

lol and my last resort, and sorry I can't rent him out, but my hubby will sometimes tell me some stories about his role-playing game sessions with his friends.  I swear I try to stay awake to listen, but it always puts me to sleep.  :(  Thankfully he is very understandable of that situation and does it just to put me to sleep.  lol

Actually, you really don't.
About 7 hours is just fine for everybody.

My sleep pattern is still not the best.

I generally wake up fairly early every day and never get to sleep before 2-3am.

On average I suppose I get around 4 - 4.5 and sometimes 5 hours of sleep.. which is better than a lot of people I suppose.
