Subject: How these words should be spelt
Written By: Mergal on 05/04/05 at 10:17 am
After all English is not Latin....
chek instead of check
couf instead of cough
flite instead of flight
fone instead of phone
gost instead of ghost
hoo instead of who
laff instead of laugh
lite instead of light
nite instead of night
rite instead of right
site instead of sight
strait instead of straight
tite instead of tight
wat instead of what
wi instead of why
wite instead of white
No wonder people have a hard time learning English as a second language! Feel free to add to the list....

couf instead of cough
I'd go with coff
gost instead of ghost
The Dutch printers of the first English dictionaries added the 'h' as I understand it.
rite instead of right
site instead of sight
strait instead of straight
These spellings already exist but have a different meaning. So we'd get even more confused!
laff instead of laugh
Or 'larf' depending where you come from.

It isn't the cough that carries you off, its the coffin they carry you off in.

How about a spinoff thread as to how certain words should be pronounced? I wonder if we should start one of those...
For example, I think the word "steak" should be pronounced "steek", since "steal" and "steam" are pronounced "steel" and "steem" respectively. ::)
Why is "colonel" pronounced like "kernel"? Why don't we say it "co-LOAN-el" or something like that?

Wow, this is kinda what me and my mate spent the duration of an IT lesson today doing! Coz we were bored, we typed out subtitles for eachother, so I said something and he typed what he heard/how I said it. It was funny, coz we were coming out with things like
"Zahabba mennnmff 'puter y'burk" instead off "Get the hell off my computer your burk". Of course, our little game was far more important than the coursework we were supposed to be getting on with! ;D
