ok.. we have had some situations lately where people have been offended/angry by others actions on the board.  Most of the time, offending the person was not intentional, and this happens because we are on a message board and we can't see facial expressions, etc.

So, I wanted to ask you guys if you are offended/bothered by these things, so that I can be careful not to offend anyone.  Maybe others will check back here if they aren't sure whether their intended comments will offend you.  And I don't mean just mildly irritating.. we all go through that..  I mean things that would make you unhappy here, or cause you to think badly of another user.

Does it bother you when:

1. You are photoshopped with another member of the board in a "lovers" position?
(Example: The Beth & Alex picture)

2. You are photoshopped as an ape, or other demeaning figure?

3. You are photoshopped as a flattering figure? (Model, sports great, etc)

4. You are ridiculed/made fun of for your taste in music, television, etc?
(Example: How can you listen to that crap?)

5. You are ridiculed/made fun of for your political views?
(Example: Yeah. That figures.  I forgot you're a {insert liberal or conservative}.

6. Your spelling/grammar errors are pointed out?

7. Your spelling is corrected/made fun of when your error causes you to type a word with a completely different meaning? (Ex: you type suck instead of stuck)

8. Someone directs a post to you using sexual language?

9. Someone directs a post to you using foul language? (but not insulting to you)
(Example:  Man, that's f'd up)

10. Someone starts a silly rumor about you?
(Example: Jiminy chews his toenails)

11. Anything else?  (Please don't name names or specific incidents... just say what types of posts you find offensive, if they aren't listed above.)

i don't get easily offended....there have been a few times that I didn't agree with a particular picture posted or phrase used...but I am a pretty open-minded person...and I just let it go in one ear and out the other.

I feel that if you respect others (no matter what differences/viewpoints you may have)..then chances are, they will respect you back...it's a give-give situation.

If it helps any, I've never been much of a Star Wars fan (I saw Episode 1 in the theatre in '99 and liked it okay, but I never could "get into" the Trilogy).

I'm sure some people think BTTF is "just some 80's time travel movie with this loud old man" (people have described Doc that way!).

some of the images posted haven't been 'nice' and I think people forget that others maybe using the computer in a public area i.e. library or at work

I am not easily offended. I like to think that I have a sense of humor and at times it can be a bit on the warped side.  However, there have been times when things start out as a joke get a bit carried away and then it just becomes ridiculous and it is no longer funny (to me anyway) and sometimes just becomes crude. The same thing holds true about some of the pics that are posted. I am also thinking about the fact that Chucky wants to make this a "family" website and we do have at least one member who is 11 and a lot of the stuff that is posted is not appropate for someone that age. I also like to think that if we see a pic that we find offensive, we will PM the person who posted it FIRST and explain that we do find it offensive and if it not resolved, then report it to Chucky. (The only time I can think of what when we had someone posting a very crude pic all over the boards-I know many of you remember that one.)

In terms of someone making a comment about personal taste in music/politics/religion, etc. there is a big difference when someone is making a joke and someone being vicious. Though how it is worded can be percieved as a personal attack (which is something I DO find offensive-and I don't care who is being attacked, I don't like it.) I think many people should be very careful how they word jokes in this area. I also find it offensive when people use "colorful metaphors" (as Spock referred to them as) when they are directed at people. But, using them as a part of speech I don't, but I think people should find ways to express your meaning without actually saying the WORD, i.e. "WTF". Again that comes from the fact that we do have young people on this board.

As for spelling, the only time I will "make fun" of someone's spelling is when it gives the sentence a different meaning-and sometimes it can be very funny. A few people have done the same thing with me and when I notice my mistake, I laughed along with them. I'm sure most of you know about a certain board member (who I love very dearly) who is a notoriously terrible speller. However, he probably has more education than most of us on this board put together (yes, he does have a Ph.D. and has the title of Dr.-he just can't spell and/or type and is too lazy to use the spell check.)

Thanks, guys.  There have been a few incidents where I have posted something, intending for it to be funny, but then realized that it had the potential to offend someone, so I ended up deleting it.  Its just hard sometimes when we can't see faces or hear tones of voice, to know how things were meant.  I can say, however, I have never posted ANYTHING with the intent to offend someone.  This thread has helped me to figure out who I can joke around with on what levels. :)

I am guilty of using "ghetto" as a negative term.  I don't believe I use it to be racist, though.  What I DO refer to as "ghetto" is rap music which talks about drugs, killing cops, gangs, etc. and attempts to glamourize these things.  I also consider "ghetto" to be people of any race who wear pants that are 10 sizes too big, with their boxers hanging out of the top, clothes with graffiti-style text on them, etc.  I also use the term "ghetto" to describe when people purposely talk in a way that sounds uneducated and thug-like.  This would be my opinion regardless of race or color.

Ebonics, however, I admit I do associate with black people, although I realize that not all black people talk this way.  I also realize that other races (mostly the younger generation) talk this way to an extent.  It bothers me when I hear anyone, regardless of race, pronounce "ask" as "AKS" and the other thing that really irritates me is when someone is confronted/criticized, and they give a response of "AND?  AND?  AND?  AND?"  I'm not sure how the term "Ebonics" was chosen to define this language, and I agree that the term sounds racist.  But other than ghetto, I just don't know another term for it, so I do call it ebonics.  I will try to avoid that subject on these boards though, Nullandvoid... Again, I don't mean to be offensive...it's just that I don't know of another term for these things.

What bothers me about is that it tends to have an anti-intellectual tilt, and I have known several very intelligent black guys who held themselves back because the identity they embraced(the mainstream rap identity promoted by guys like 50 cent) discourages intellectualism.

I can't tell if we're still joking around, or if you're serious. Because if you are, I'd like some examples of how I'm "quite an offensive little xxxx". I can counter just about anything you got with logical explanation and common sense. If you got an issue with swearing, meh, you got me there. But it's not enough to get me banned. Goddammit.

i thought i do quite nicely on that matter  :). my sheeshdisturbing was in relation to apricot and some of the other younger members on these boards. i do have a general respect for people, even those with wildy differing opinions (believe me, i held my tongue many times in the current topic and religious boards. lest i blow up and get kicked off of the boards)

I agree with you, Sputnik as long as you know the people you are dealing with... I have seen many "sheeshdisturbing" cases where everybody involved was obviously amused.

Although I agree with Bobby also that nobody comes on this board to get upset/hurt, they come here to be entertained.  Although I can't help it if someone is scrolling through the threads and reads one of my posts and finds it offensive, i DO make an effort not to "direct" any potentially offensive posts at anyone who I feel might be personally offended by it.  (Although I admit it is fun to confuse Bobby) :)

I am guilty of using "ghetto" as a negative term.  I don't believe I use it to be racist, though.  What I DO refer to as "ghetto" is rap music which talks about drugs, killing cops, gangs, etc. and attempts to glamourize these things.  I also consider "ghetto" to be people of any race who wear pants that are 10 sizes too big, with their boxers hanging out of the top, clothes with graffiti-style text on them, etc.  I also use the term "ghetto" to describe when people purposely talk in a way that sounds uneducated and thug-like.   This would be my opinion regardless of race or color.

Ebonics, however, I admit I do associate with black people, although I realize that not all black people talk this way.  I also realize that other races (mostly the younger generation) talk this way to an extent.  It bothers me when I hear anyone, regardless of race, pronounce "ask" as "AKS" and the other thing that really irritates me is when someone is confronted/criticized, and they give a response of "AND?  AND?  AND?  AND?"   I'm not sure how the term "Ebonics" was chosen to define this language, and I agree that the term sounds racist.  But other than ghetto, I just don't know another term for it, so I do call it ebonics.   I will try to avoid that subject on these boards though, Nullandvoid... Again, I don't mean to be offensive...it's just that I don't know of another term for these things.

Having a crack at someone in jest is fine in the right way, knowing the person recieving it can handle it. I don't like the malicious sort of 'sheeshdisturbing' which Sputnik referred to in which the only aim of the post is to blatantly injure/offend anyone on the boards with the sole aim to just shock and outrage people. It's the intention not neccessarily the post itself - and that was what got me upset about Sputnik's post.  :)

ok.. we have had some situations lately where people have been offended/angry by others actions on the board.  Most of the time, offending the person was not intentional, and this happens because we are on a message board and we can't see facial expressions, etc.

So, I wanted to ask you guys if you are offended/bothered by these things, so that I can be careful not to offend anyone.  Maybe others will check back here if they aren't sure whether their intended comments will offend you.  And I don't mean just mildly irritating.. we all go through that..  I mean things that would make you unhappy here, or cause you to think badly of another user.

Does it bother you when:

1. You are photoshopped with another member of the board in a "lovers" position?
(Example: The Beth & Alex picture)

2. You are photoshopped as an ape, or other demeaning figure?

3. You are photoshopped as a flattering figure? (Model, sports great, etc)

4. You are ridiculed/made fun of for your taste in music, television, etc?
(Example: How can you listen to that crap?)

5. You are ridiculed/made fun of for your political views?
(Example: Yeah. That figures.  I forgot you're a {insert liberal or conservative}.

6. Your spelling/grammar errors are pointed out?

7. Your spelling is corrected/made fun of when your error causes you to type a word with a completely different meaning? (Ex: you type suck instead of stuck)

8. Someone directs a post to you using sexual language?

9. Someone directs a post to you using foul language? (but not insulting to you)
(Example:  Man, that's f'd up)

10. Someone starts a silly rumor about you?
(Example: Jiminy chews his toenails)

11. Anything else?  (Please don't name names or specific incidents... just say what types of posts you find offensive, if they aren't listed above.)


Not on this site, a few of those remind me of what goes on at a gaming site I'm registered at, the grammer part in particular.

Even more memorable (I think!) was, after it had all quietened down, they both turned out to be really sweet people...

When people openly insult other people or myself, or cause un-necessary disruption, that irritates me
