I signed up a few weeks ago to be in an event called Prom preview at my school. In the event, seniors, men and women both, dress up in formals(which are provided by the school), and put on a fashion show in the auditorium for the whole school to get everyone hyped up for Prom and everything. In this event, guys escort girls. The guy gives his escort a rose and leads her arm in arm to the front part of the stage and they both 'model' what they have on.

Well today was the first practice and we were told who we were escorting.

I was sorely disssappointed. The girl who was picked for me to escort, she is well, less than desirable. Infact, out of all the girls there, she was the ONLY one I found unattractive.

Also, a girl whom I've had a crush on since last year is in it. I had my fingers crossed that I'd get picked to be her escort. I didn't ask her to the Prom, because I was too chicken to ask her before someone else asked her. So I thought at least in Prom preview I might get to be her escort, and I even dropped a few hints to the staff who are in charge of this event.

I asked them what their criteria was for pairing people up, and the lady told me they based it upon height more than anything else.

You know, I usually don't feel too bad about being a short guy(I am 5'7"), but, this really does hurt. The girl whom I was hoping to escort, Mary, is 5'9", so she is taller than me. I cannot help but think that I could have been her escort if it wasn't for my height..

Man, I feel like **** right now.

awww sweetie....I know what it feels like...believe me....when I was in high school I wanted the lead for our musical SOO badly...and even though I have a nice voice and had been in all of the select choirs..etc....the part went to one of the "popular..skinny" girls...I was heartbroken...I know exactly how you feel!!! Now..if they were doing the musical, "Hairspray"...I would have definitely gotten the lead....I know how it sucks that high school is so political...I can tell ya though that college is a whole lot better...people don't tend to judge you so harshly....and you have more opportunities to get involved without having the same 4 people running everything.

Thanks, Erin. Yeah its just that, this year, my Senior year, I felt like for once, I've been getting along with my peers. I was feeling comfortable in part of the group, I was beginning to feel like I was actually someone. I can totally understand and relate to how you feel....it really does suck...people just don't know how badly they can hurt others.

ElDuderino, don't let it get you down.  There ARE some of us girls out here who actually DO go for the guys who aren't "big & buff".  I've been told by MANY people that if hubby and I were in a room full of people, we are probably the last 2 they'd put together based on looks.  quirky_cat_girl is right, high school is all about crap like that....I lost the part I should've gotten in one of our high school musicals (Rose in "Bye, Bye Birdie") to the principal's daughter, even though she would've made a much better Kim than I did, simply because she wanted the part of Rose.  Things will turn around in college :-*


hey that's the part that I wanted in our school musical too (Rose)...but it was given to one of the richest, snobiest girls in school...I know how it feels..and it sucks!.....but I was given the part of Mrs. Peterson..and I was a kick arse old Jewish lady!! LOL!

Don't be so down on yourself.  You sound like a great guy.  It's tough being young and feeling different.  I just think about the kids I went to school with who were in the "too cool" group.  I see some of them now and they're a sorry bunch.  Still very shallow with broken relationships and dramas in their lives.  There was a time when I envied them - what a waste of energy :P

I wouldn't worry about it too much-I know easier said than done. The fact is I didn't go to either one of my proms because I didn't have a date. I didn't want to be a wallflower so I didn't go at all which I regretted.

???Well,first of all i wonder why you find her unattractive.I look like what many peoople would think of as a reddish blond middle easterner--nothing wrong with that,but some kids did make fun of the way i looked when i was in school,and it was kind of for racial reasons.Remember,it's not the real prom,and the couples were picked to look good and make a good impression gor the kids and maybe parents.I'm 5'4",so i don't think you're short myself.it's okay to meet people who are 'different'.Don't worry about looks so much.if the girl has a boring personality,well,you're not actuallyy going to the prom with her,so who cares?Cheers!

Yeah I know, its not that big of an annoyance it will just last a couple of minutes.

Just dissapointed, the majority of girls involved in this I get along with, infact a couple of them are friends of mine, but I get partnered with someone I don't get along with. Oh well, you can't always get what you want.

On the bright side:

My tux will rock. The coat and pants are black with black pinstripes(they stand out because they are shiny), solid black dress shoes, and the vest, tie, and handerchief(the one that goes in the front pocket and sticks out) are burgundy, shirt is white. And the vest/tie/handerchief are made out of a silky kinda material. Very sharp.

I'm going to rent the same one for the Prom itself, except I'm going to get the vest, tie, and handkerchief in white, and the shirt in black. Oh, and black and white dress shoes as opposed to solid black.

Well I will wish that Mary's escort doesn't go to school on Friday... and they have to make a last-minute adjustment in your favor  ;)

He got kicked off, because he missed practice. Its a different guy escorting her now. Hes cool.
