Subject: Cheesiest Year Since 1965

Written By: Full_House_Fan on 02/13/05 at 8:37 pm

I say #1 is 1988.  Followed by in no order 1977, 1990, 1984, and 1965.

BUMP

Just been digging through the archives tonight - I miss threads like these!

I went with 1992, but late 1991/early 92 mesh together IMO. Some of the dance pop songs that had that late 80's flavor to it (eg: "Shake that Body", "Live and Learn"), as well as cheesy, early white rappers like Vanilla Ice are just a couple reasons.

1992 seems more dated than any of the 80's or the 70's ever did.

Not saying it wasn't a good year, but the cheese factor was at the max then! ;)

The 2000s have cheese written all over them.

But not as much as 1992 as Marty said!  ;D

Wasn't "Ice Ice Baby" 1990. I don't think it was 91 or 92. Hey I liked "Live and Learn" and I still like that song today. "Shake That Body" no that was called "Move This" by Technotronic I think. That songs alright. 92 was not a bad year for music. I think 1999 and 2000 were cheesy. All that teen-pop junk.

90 was cheesy with C&C Music Factory, Black Box, and Snap(I don't know year Snap came out. Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer were 1990 as well. Wilson Philips hit it big in 90. Yeah 90 was cheesey. I liked all that house music but not Vanilla Ice. MC Hammer had that song "Pray". I kinda like song by him. All the other stuff by him kind of doesn't stand the test of time in my opinion.

^ You're right, Vanilla Ice was '90 but his influence was still felt in 91 and early '92. Wilson Philips, despite not coming out until 1990/91 were more of an 80's act, IMO. They would've fit in with Cyndi Lauper and Madonna in 1984 just as well.

I like alot of those 90-92 songs, so when I say cheesy I mean it in a good way. :)

Wilson Philips fit in 84. Maybe 89 but 84? I don't know about that.

True - I think you're right now that I think about it. It's not nearly as synthesized or "80s" as music in the 82-87 time frame.

After I wrote that I thought, they're kind of to the 90s what Christopher Cross was to the 80's. In his first album (1980) there's a definite 70s influence - it sounds 1978 maybe but not 1974. However it's mixed with some keyboard elements that would become the 80's sound. He's like halfway between 70s artists like Ambrosia and Firefall, and 80s artists like REO Speedwagon and Toto.

On that level WP could also probably fit alongside "90s" artists like Lisa Loeb and Melissa Etheridge.

More like the 1988-91 time frame could fit them. 87 at the earliest - they're more "subdued" in the 80's sound compared to Cyndi, etc.

Yeah I'll agree Wilson Philip's music isn't nearly as synthesized as early to mid 80' music was.

Interesting analogy with that Christopher Cross(80's) and Philips (90')s. Thats a great analogy I would have never thought of. Yeah Cross's sound was 70's but did have 80's influence to it. Yes Cross's was halfway between different 70's and 80's acts.

Wilson Philips would have gone good alongside Donna Lewis in 1996. Donna Lewis had a hit in 96 with "I will Always Love You Forever" which does have a little Wilson Philips influence to it now that I think about it.

I;ll agree the 88-91 theme does fit Wilson Phillips well.

I would have to say 1988....because of some of the music...and just stuff that was going on in my life at the time.

Erin :)
