Yes some serious celebrations going on down in Ballarat this week.

I have been promoting it all year via my Tom Burlinson site (he starred in the mini series) and have organised a few holidays for visiting Americans so they can suss out an incredible piece of Australia history.

Indeed !  A defining moment in our history. :)

I found this quote from Mark Twain (said after he visited Ballarat sometime in the 1890's) in my quest for a picture of the flag and I think it sums it up nicely...

"It was a revolution - small in size, but great politically. It was a strike for liberty, a struggle for principle, a stand against injustice and oppression... it is another instance of a victory won by a lost battle."

hehehe different kind of Eureka !!

It was a rebellious uprising that gave workers rights.

The blue and white flag featuring the Southern Cross hangs above 99% of construction sites around our country to this very day.

Fascinating stuff...never knew anything about that before (blame my education...!!)

How we differ culturally...in some areas of the nation, if you flew our flag you would at best be described as 'jingoistic', or at worst 'racist'...

...except when there's a football match on...!!

I read a few sites about it before I posted my comment  ;)

It wasn't something I heard about before either.  One of the sites I looked at made mention of the Lambing Flats 'riots' which I had read about (in Bill Bryson, I get all my best stuff from him!).  That site did make Eureka day sound a bit nationalistic in a bad way.

Unfortunately we in the U.S. are not really taught the history of other nations (sometimes we are barely taught the history of our own nation  :-\\). Thank you for giving me an education on what seems to be a very defining moment in the history of your nation. So to all our Aussie friends, Happy Eureka Day (and happy hangover  ;))

Well I dont know what it is like in Aus schools today Cat but when I was at school teachers felt it was more important to teach us famous American and English war and discovery dates and we were forced to memorise the US presidents in date order !

In 1979 when Perth and Western Australia had their 150th birthday - there was a lot of historical data thrown at us - but as years have gone by I have learned it was a heavily selective data.

I taught myself Australian history out of a sense of curiousity.  While studying my family genealogy I would get curious about dates and locations of events various ancestors took part in and so I would find a book and read up on the subject.  When I have the oppurtunity - I take a trip to the location to try and learn even more.

I would say I have learned a lot more since school than in school.

It sounds like they got a great crowd at Ballarat yesterday for the celebrations - even if the unionists and father of US prisoner (aussie guy the US caught hanging around the Al Quaida) tried to hijack the ceremony for their own views and needs - very unneccessary indeed.
