'Happy' - 'Jump' - Pointer Sisters
'Energetic' - Oddly enough 'Maniac' by Mike Sembello
'Sedate' - Er . . . When a man loves a woman by Percy Sledge - probably the plodding chords do that. ;D

classic rock, 80s (and early 90s) pop, and disco make me feel good!
most rap makes me cringe. However, the ones with good messages make me feel hopeful!

Keane's "Everybody's Changing" had a very weird effect on me. Way back when, in the dark mists of time, I was friends with this chick, and when we were together, she always emphasized how much she loved that song and how much it reminded her of our relationship.
Come a rather frantic two weeks later (I swear it felt like months, it was, and still is, chock full of weird and strange memories, I have to admit), we had to go our separate ways. She was emotionally unstable and went through this (rather harrowing, as I'm sure you'll understand) suicidal experience where she felt that every minute of every day she was being chased and caught up by the shadows which had haunted her for so long.
This song, you'll understand, existed much much later. But when she telephoned me up and reminded me of it (all in the most sensitive of ways) I couldn't help believing that it was so pertinent.
Nowadays, all I know that that song is not part of, is the yearning process. Maybe it's a cleanser..

There are many in each category. I'm going to try to be very brief.
Depressed: This Used to be my Playground-Madonna
Angry: Life is a Lemon (And I Want my Money Back)-Meatloaf
Happy: La Isla Bonita-Madonna (Carlos and my song ;D)
Energetic: I'm So Excited-The Pointer Sisters, Smooth-Santana
Sedate: Castle Walls-Styx And just about anything from Pink Floyd.
I should point out that I am usually feeling that way BEFORE I turn on the music. I turn on the music BECAUSE I am feeling that way.

I agree howard with both "Dust In The Wind", and with disco/funk. Another song that makes me sad is "Nights In White Satin" by The Moody Blues. Both great songs though. :)

Creed? I know that Nickelback had a big hit with "How You Remind Me" in late 2001/early 2002, but did Creed have a song of the same title that I'm not aware of?
Anyway, that is one song that makes me feel energetic; there are others, but I can't think of them all right now; I'll post my complete list when I get an opportunity.

Good point, Cat. It seems we use music to focus on the emotions we already feel rather than to make those emotions happen within us.
I seem to be on a quest today to bump extremely old threads. Intriguing stuff...
An update from a post I wrote about 6 years ago (because a lot happens in 6 years).
Depressed: 'How far' - Matina McBride
Angry: Any 50 cent song or Sean Paul song...Slaves to their own rap stereotype
Happy: 'Mr Bassman' - Johnny Cymbal
Energetic: 'Ill be ready' - Sunblock
Sedate: 'Winter winds' - Mumford and Sons

music almost always makes me happy and I could probably list 100's. When I don't feel good I don't want to get down tonight. Dust In The Wind- Kansas is a depressing kind of a song. The Answer Is Blowing In the Wind- Peter Paul and Mary is a sad song.

Some of Pete Seeger's political songs, especially the historical ones, depress me because there is really no movement.
Some of Woody Guthrie and Utah Philips make me angry because they sing of injustice.
Chuck Mangone usually makes me happy, but "The Children of Sanchez" also makes me melancholie
Good jazz, and salsa make me energetic
Most Bach, and especially his lute music are very calming.
My tastes in music are, to say the least, eclectic. You might also check out Japanese koto music for a good relax, and if you want to move, try flamenco, if you can sit still to that, you ain't got no rhythm. And Greek "Zorba" music is the same - umpha
Not that I don't enjoy contemporary music - rap excepted - but there is soooo much more than the contemporary scene, and for my money, that which has passed the test of time is much better than most of what I hear today

Been a while since I've done one of these.
Difficulty rating: Artists you've heard of.
Keyboard version (new wave / EBM / goth / industrial / it's got keyboards in it):
Depressed? - Sisters of Mercy, Dominion/Mother Russia) (Honorable mention: the more obvious choice of This Corrosion. Problem is, the song's actually probably just a rant about his band's troubles. Can anyone substantiate the rumor that it was deemed too depressing for whatever choral group Eldrich originally picked out and he went with the New York Choral Society as a second choice?)
Angry? - NIN, Heresy. (Honorable mention: As long as I'm playing the Sisters of Mercy card, Vision Thing)
Happy? - Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Success (Obscurity limit removed? Art of Noise, Hammersmith to Tokyo and Back, ten minutes of slowly-building audio awesomeness, and it was performed live.)
Energetic? - Front 242, Headhunter. Best. Track. Evar. (Obscurity limit removed? The Weathermen, Bang. "It's 8:02, the coffee's cold...")
Sedate? - MC 900 Foot Jesus, The City Sleeps
Guitar version (rock / alt-rock / metal / it's got guitars in it):
Depressed? - Jesus Jones, Right Here, Right Now. Love the 1991 post-cold-war optimism, cringe at how naive it sounds with 20 years of hindsight.
Angry? - RATM, Bombtrack. (Honorable mention: RATM, Killing in the Name
Happy? - Timbuk 3, Future's So Bright (I Gotta Wear Shades)
Energetic? - Judas Priest, tie between Turbo Lover and Locked In. Total 80s cheese, and either's a guaranteed speeding ticket.
Sedate? - Joe Walsh, Life's Been Good (to me so far). (Honorable mentions: Dire Straits, Calling Elvis and David Wilcox, Riverboat Fantasy)

I've had a hard time with this list because there's about a gazillion songs I could put on each, but here are the ones I'm listening to the most at the moment...
Depressed: "Gravity" Sara Bareilles, or "How it Ends" by DeVotchka
Angry: "25 to Life" Eminem
Happy: "Hey Ladies" The Beastie Boys or "Freedom" George Michael or "Overjoyed" by Stevie Wonder
Energetic: "My Chick Bad" by Ludacris or "Low" by Flo-rida. Basically any good hip hop.
Sedate: "Mad World" Gary Jules version instead of Tears for Fears original. or "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd
