Bergmann is bleak, you have to be in a real noir mood to sit through him. I think to many people dismiss
black white movies, too many americans shy away from foreign films. They don't know what they are
missing
Zorba the Greek
The Knack(and how to get it)
La Strada
Whistle Down the Wind
Village of the darned("leave us alone" shivvvvverssss")
Paris Blues

You just have to be careful of what you see by him. His "Wild Strawberries" (1957) and "Persona" (1966) are his best.
"The Knack(and how to get it)" -- I've been meaning to see that one for years.
Good picks.

Port of Call was my first, late one night on PBS when my parents thought I was asleep, and a new
world was open to me, even thought it was a couple of years before I found out who had done
the movie and his other works. I, who never, ever cried at a movie, watched Scenes from a
Marriage in the privacy of my own home because I couldn't stand to see myself sob that way, let alone
other people, he is kicka** when it comes to ripping out your heart. The Seventh Seal...
I do like his lighter side,(lighter, not never light) but I think his soul is more in the dark movies.

"Vertigo". Great pick.
One of Hitchcock's best, I think. People who are fans of "The Birds" or "Psycho" probably aren't going to like "Vertigo", with its sloooow, we're in no hurry, 1958 kind of movement. It's not your typical Hitchcock movie, but he does show what a great director he really was.
And to tell you the truth I really didn't think most women cared for "Vertigo" anyway.
I also read once (and they may have a good point), but it was suggested that it would have been a lot better if Scottie fell off the bell tower at the end, not Madeline. Sounds clever to me.

To my list a little ways above you can add "The Last Samurai", "Good Will Hunting", "Interview With A Vampire", "Lord Of THe RIngs(all three)". Not sure why I left the last two off my orginial list.
I just watched "Man On Fire" the other day not expecting much but was really surprised at how good that movie really was. Anyone else seen it?
