Subject: Songs With Romeo & Juliet Theme
Written By: Junior on 09/21/04 at 7:01 pm
Before I get to the main point: Today at school, I managed to get out of one of my classes to go over to my journalism class to do some work on the newspaper. Our journalism advisor is also an English teacher - and she had her English class at the time, whom she was teaching Romeo & Juliet. This afternoon, I decided I wanted to work on a themed mix CD but didn't have a theme. So I decided I would make a Romeo & Juliet-themed mix, of which I would make a copy of my teacher.
Problem is, I'm struggling with filling up the CD. I do have the following:
Blue Oyster Cult "Don't Fear The Reaper"
Prince "When Doves Cry"
Radiohead "Exit Music (For A Film)"
Dave Matthews Band "The Space Between"
Dire Straits "Romeo And Juliet"
Queen "Who Wants To Live Forever"
I need songs with any type of parallel to R&J. The song doesn't have to be about R&J at all...it just has to have some type of relation. So, I'd appreciate if any of ya'll could give me some suggestions as to what songs I should put on the mix and how they connect to R&J (and if they are not-very-well-known songs, perhaps a link to an mp3 as well if possible?)
Thanks so much!

Not sure whether this would be on the right lines...
...but 'West Side Story' was based (I think...) on the 'R&J' story - so p'raps a couple of numbers from that...?
...and not forgetting Prokoviev's famous ballet adaptation...

There's an old UK hit called "Romeo" by a band called Mr Big, from about 1977 I think.
Chrous goes:
Step back inside me Romeo, she said
Step back inside me, take me to your bed
Step back inside me Romeo
My Juliet and take me home
It's a good song if you can track it down, although I thought it very sappy at the time, as I was heavily into The Clash and The Stranglers in 1977!

There was a song called "Rag Doll" by the Four Season
(Rag doll, ooh.) (Hand me down)
When she was just a kid. her clothes were hand-me-downs.
(Hand-me-down)
They always laughed at her when she came into town.
Called her rag doll,
Little rag doll. Such a pretty face should be dressed in lace.
Ooh, ooh ooh ooh ooh. Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh.
(Shag rag doll)
I'd change her sad rags into glad rags if I could (if I could).
My folks won't let me cause they say that she's no good.
She's a rag doll, such a rag doll; though I love her so,
I can't let her know.
Ooh ooh ooh ooh oh. Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh oh.
Aah aah aah aah aah. I love you just they way you are.
Or maybe "He's a Rebel" by the Crystals
See the way he walks down the street
Watch the way he shuffles his feet
My, he holds his head up high
When he goes walking by
He's my guy
When he holds my hand I'm so proud
'Cause he's not just one of the crowd
My baby, oh he's the one
To try the things they've never done
Just because of that they say
CHORUS
He's a rebel and he'll never ever be any good
He's a rebel and he'll never ever dows what he should
And just because he doesn't do what everybody else does
That's no reason why I can't give him all my love
He is always good to me, always treats me tenderly
'Cause he's not a rebel, no no no
He's not a rebel, no no no, to me
INSTRUMENTAL
If they don't like him that way, they won't like me after today
I'll be standing right by his side, when they say
CHORUS
He's a rebel and he'll never ever be any good
He's a rebel 'cause he never ever does what he should
And just because he doesn't do what everybody else does
That's no reason why we can't share a love
He is always good to me, good to him I'll try to be
'Cause he's not a rebel, no no no
He's not a rebel, no no no, to me
(He's not a rebel, no no no
He's not a rebel, no no no
He's not a rebel, no no no
He's not a rebel, no no no)

There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths
Just Like Heaven - The Cure
Eternal Flame - The Bangles (OK. this one isn't as "doomed" as the others)
Slightly odd, but with resemblances:
Born To Run or Thunder Road - both by Bruce Springsteen
Tunnel Of Love - Dire Straits, again

Rosalita(come out tonight) would fill the bill nicely

Here is one I just remembered and had to google
Brother Louie
She was black as the night
Louie was whiter than white
Danger, danger when you taste brown sugar
Louie fell in love overnight
Nothing bad, it was good
Louie had the best girl he could
When he took her home
To meet his mama and papa
Louie knew just where he stood
Louie Louie Louie, Louie
Louie Louie Lou-I
Louie Louie Louie
Louie Louie you're gonna cry
---- Instrumental Interlude ----
There he stood in the night
Knowing what's wrong from what's right
He took her home to meet his mama and papa
Man, he had a terrible fright
Louie nearly caused a scene
Wishin' it was a dream
Ain't no diff'rence if you're black or white
Brothers, you know what I mean
Louie Louie Louie, Louie
Louie Louie Lou-I
Louie Louie Louie
Louie Louie you're gonna cry

Did anyone say No Myth : Michael Penn?
It gives new meaning to the character flaws of Romeo and Juliet. Maybe she is just looking for a companion but because she is inexperienced in love she thinks her infatuation with Romeo is real love. ÂÂ
     That Chorus goes
     So---
What if I were Romeo, in Black jeans
       what if i were Heathcliff
       it's no myth...
maybe she's just looking for--someone to dance with.
And also maybe you could go out on a limb and say "Fascination": Human League. Look at the lyrics. Maybe you can find a point to stand on my suggestion. ??
And Mark Knofler does "juliet" I think too. It was heard in the Empire
Records movie.
