RAP....sure some have tried to say that it's the "Talk of the street" and it's "Real" but a LOT of it is just about $$$....Puff-diddy-gang-bang, and a lot of the rest just rip off riffs from Rock artists and they rhyme CUSS words. THAT is what kids today get to hear. 

I agree, Rap is simply putting GREED and unethical behavior on a pedestal.  But the worst is COUNTRY!!  I can't believe that for years country was relegated to AM around here.  In the 90s FM country stations started popping up like (unused simile.)  Now there are only a couple.  You know, if you trace the style of pop music from the late 50s to the 80s there isn't much significant difference, Rap changed all that.  I am going to check a few more posts before I go to bed.  I just got done with the graveyard shift and tend to ramble.  See!

Not all rap is like that.

Anyway, for now, I picked: blue grass, Gospel, swing/big band, jazz, '70's Disco, rap (current), gangsta rap, blues, and muzak..but, to be fair, I don't think I'd RECOGNIZE some of the choices... ???

Not many people know this, but "rap" is actually spelled with a silent "C".
And there's a reason why "country" has its name: anyone who performs it is described by the first syllable of it.

I like to think of myself as having a fairly broad-ish palette of taste (?!) and will therefore give anything a listen at least once...

But the 'in-yer-face' style of music of recent years does leave me cold...

Duke Ellington (for it was he) summed it up best many years ago when he said there were only two types of music - good and bad...

Rap is Crap!

Not because a lot is about violence and illegal activity, but even the pop rappers like P-diddy, M&M, Puf-n-stuff, or Tinky-Winky or whatever preschool names they are using suck because there is no music to it, just loud yelling and annoying sounds like buzzers and scratches. Any time you do hear actual music in a rap song, it's because it was sampled from a real musician's record.

My least favorite style, emo, wasn't up there.  Oh girls don't like me, I think I'll whine and moan as loud as I can for sixty minutes!  The world sucks!  Waaaah!

Rap and Polka about tie in my view!  ;D Actually though among white people I've noticed that they either love or hate rap. A lot of times I'll be on the street hear some heavy rap and expect to see some hardcore gangsta, but instead see a little blondhaired kid driving.

Rhythmic talking is an interesting idea in terms of musicality, but the subject matter of most songs of this variety is repetitive and boring.

Punk, but very gentle, usually tries to seem very deep and sad, lyrics usually don't mean a whole lot. Acoustic Guitars a lot of the time, too.

It's basically a grunge-influenced style of Rap. Especially the 1999/2000ish stuff like Limp Bizkit, Korn and Kid Rock (though he's actually a bit better than most music of this style).

"Nu wave" is like alternative new wave (i.e. The Bravery, Killers, etc).

I've always seen nu-metal as being "rock", but it definitely has a hip hop element.

"Nu Wave" or "Neo-Wave" is a mix of '90s alternative, synth pop and post-punk.  I like this genre, not as much as the '80s new wave but it's pretty good :)

Oh, you get hold music? All the places I've ever called just put on a popular radio station from the area of the place I called.. a lot of Adult Alternative.

But I guess anything you'd associate with being on hold would make you angry.

I always either get John Tesh or some instrument that sounds like wind chimes being clanked over some wave-like noise.



I will say this; if you want to hear GOOD ambient/electronica/new age music, listen to Musical Starstreams (http://www.starstreams.com).  The jazz station in Chicago used to air this program on Sunday nights from 10pm to midnight and it was amazing.  Lots of great music to just chill to, and no muzak in sight.
