Subject: summer homework

a bit of a two-parter...

1. for the students of the board, who has homework to do this summer?
*raises hand*  for two subjects.  i'm such a little over-achiever. :P

2. do you agree or disagree with this practice?
well, since i have to do it, i don't really think it's cool.  plus, isn't summer vacation supposed to be a break from school?  it's kind of hard to have a break from school if you're doing assignments all summer.  i don't really like it, but i can understand that teachers sometimes can't fit everything they want to into the school year.  it just sucks that it has to run into the summer.

the good thing is that the workload isn't too bad though, only twenty chemistry word problems, a few books to read for english, and five or six essays.

opinions?  i know some of you are teachers, i'd like to see what you think. :)

As I indicated in a prior post I am a college student (nursing)  If I had to take classes this summer and work full time nights It'd kill me.  I don't know how some people do it.  Heck when I worked days I could get by with 4hrs or so sleep, now that I am once again on nights my brain overrides the alarm clock.  I would be missing classes left and right!
God lyk!

Thankfully, no!

2. do you agree or disagree with this practice?
Nah.  Give the kids a break.  If you make them do homework all summer, they are going to start school in the fall hating homework already.  I think it is best to give them a nice long break so then they will start school again with a fresh new start.

I don't agree with this practice. Kids have enough to do in school most of the year.

I would encourage the students to peacefully gather at the beginning of the school year and protest this practice. Asking to be stress free and happy during your short school break is a very reasonable request. If successful, a policy would be written to prevent this disturbance in the future.  :)

Yeah right. Kids are soooooooo stressed. ::) Hell, my sister is OUT of school more than she is in it. They give them like 2-3 half days each month, plus 2 days off each month. They also get three weeks off for Christmas and a week and a half for Spring Break. Stress, my foot. :P

To answer the original questions for my sister, no she doesn't have homework and she disagrees with the practice of summer homework. ;D

Down with summer homework! :D

Last summer, all students at our school had to read a book from a list of 100-ish books and do a three-part project on it, which was to be turned into the English teacher the first day of class (so those who were lucky and got English second semester like me got to wait and do their project over winter! 8)). In addition, honors students like myself had to read Huck Finnand were adminstered a test (on which many did HORRIBLY - I got a C or D on it but still did better than over half the class :o - and I came out with a B in the class too...score), during the first week of school.

This year, they did away with the project, but honors kids have to read some book about the Taliban. From what I've heard from friends, it's not that bad lengthwise.

Who knows? Maybe I'll get lucky again and have all winter to read it. ;D

I have homework to do this summer, but it's no big deal whatsoever. I's one of my most important prioroties this summer, so I look forward to getting it done and out of the way, then I'll have loads of fun things to do like play computer games, try out new computer activities, surf the Web, watch films and TV, go swimming and go to the gym.
