Subject: What kinds of storms.......

.....come through your neck of the woods?

Where I live we get the occasional hurricane every now and then, but nothing serious has happened in a while (knock on wood!).

I grew up in Michigan and we had our share of tornadoes. The upper peninsula of Michigan gets hammered with snow every winter. They get much more snow than the lower peninsula.

I live in western New York now and it's all snowstorms and a few icestorms. Tornadoes are a rarity in my area.

Well In Georgia, where I live, and North Carolina, where I go to school, we don't really get that many bad storms.  Occasionally a long the coast they will get a Hurricane.  Inland though other than the one and a blue moom tornado, we dont really get bad storms.  To far south for Blizzards, other than 93'.  Though parts NC did get it with over a foot of snow this winter.  But over all I can't think of any real common bad weather here.

Typhoons and an occasional earthquake.  The last storm to hit us was the longest and strongest I have ever experience (and we have had many).  With winds exceeding 180 mph.  There are certain times of the year when we expect to be hit by one after another and it is almost that time.  Some years we are lucky....in fact, one just by passed us a couple of days ago.

The only severe storm that I remember (tho' there's probably been a few more, but not on this scale) was the one that the south encountered in 1987...

Believe it or not, we do have the occasional tornado and earth tremor, but they're so miniscule that they barely even register! So we're lucky in that regard...

But we do like our wet stuff...yesterday evening whilst doing the weekly shop, I found I'd caught a flat - just as I was getting the wheel off, so the heavens opened big time! It never happens when you're just about to finish the job...!

In NYC, it's the usual snow in the winter, but we've had some pretty bad blizzards the past few years.

By me, we also get the real bad thunder and lightning in the summer.  My mother in law's house has been struck by lightning 3 times.

In summer we get severe thunderstorms with lots of electrical activity, and if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, you get pretty bad hail as well.

We are a bit too far south in Brisbane to get actual cyclones, but we often get the rain depressions that form after the cyclones conk out.

We get everything other than the tropical storms.  Blizzards, thunderstorms, tornados, hail, sleet, ice, etc.  Luckily, I wasn't home when the tornados hit Plainfield in '90 as they freak the crap out of me.  I have seen a few funnel clouds in my area, though.

We get the rain in the wintertime and maybe about 3-5 thunderstorms a year. We also get (but very rarely) an occasional small tornado that will touch down and maybe uproot one tree. ::)

It is only during the El Nino phenomenon that we get massively awesome storms, like the one in '95 that actually flooded our area really badly. :o

Oh yeah, let's not forget the earthquakes that Cali is famous for. :P

We get snowstorms. We also get a few snowstorms followed by some snowstorms. Did I mention that we get snow?  ;)  It is really fun when we get Nor'easters. A couple feet of snow-loads of fun.  ;D  We joke about not taking the snow tires off until June. There have a few occations where we will get "thunder-snow". Rare, but it happens. We also get ice storms once in a while. We also get the reminants of hurricanes but by the time they reach us, they have lost their punch. We do get tornados every now and again but they are usually small ones. Sometimes we don't know if it was a tornado or just a big gust of wind-that is how small they are. I know earthquakes are not really storms but we had one of those too a few years ago. We were about 60 miles from the epicenter. They are very deep here so when we do get them, they don't cause too much damage.

Washington state - Winter: Rainy and crappy.  Moss grows on everything.  This spring my car was turning green.  Summer:  Dry and warm.  Grass turns brown except when it burns.  Rare winter snow makes the weatherman look like an idiot.  A few thunderstorms in the summer when the weather moves in the wrong direction.  Otherwise, it's pretty darn good for a place that's at 46 degrees north latitude.

The only thing that really gets to me in NYC is the summer rain. The sun bakes stuff and fuses it to the sidewalk.(i.e. ice cream, dog poo, other gross stuff) Then here comes the rain stirring everything up, making it wet and sloppy. This contues for about 10-15 mins, until the sun comes back in full force baking everything again. Then this weird stench just fills the air. Especially around the South Street Seaport, disgusting! :P

Sydney gets thunderstorms during the summer months accompanied by lighting, and often some hail. We also get 'southerly busters' usually after a couple of days of scorching temperatures, bringing strong cooling winds that are a welcome relief.

Rain depressions from the cyclones of far north Queensland, have also been known to make their way this far south.

We don't really get many storms. But usually when we do, we get record breakers. But nah, Chicago is more into 70 degrees one day, and 32 the next day.

Well, can't you see this lovely tornado over the wonderful Wichitas of Oklahoma?
Actually, I've never personally seen a tornado.  But it's been rainin a whole lot lately and I'm pretty sure were gonna be getting some thunderstorms and some pretty friggin high winds at least.

Here in Nevada, we get very little rain, but it happens. No snow (except in the mountains), no hurricanes, but we get some serious windstorms that could knock you on your butt if you're not careful!!

i would have said we never got tornadoes in my neck of the woods (northern manitoba) but 8 years ago we we're struck by one...took the roofs of the shelters at our local dog kennel...no dogs were hurt.

we don't even get major rainfall and in the winter, our snow storms are few. it's just the cold. our temps go down to -40c weeks at a time during january/february.

I'm in Toronto. Hmmm, well, I guess we get small Tornados in the Barrie area. Hurricanes once in a blue moon. Then just the reg rain, blizzard or hail type storms.
