Subject: Message for Mandamoo
Manda, do you remember any Australian teenage girls magazines?
Subject: Re: Message for Mandamoo
A thread for me ! :D 8)
Hi Stompgal !
The only one that comes to mind is 'Dolly'. :-/
A 'bible' of sorts for nearly every teenage girl growing up in Sydney at least, in the '70's. It came out monthly and my girlfriends and I bought it religiously. I believe it's still going, in fact !
Are you doing a project on this, or is it just for your own interest, stompgal ? I'd be more than happy to find out more info for you.;) I wonder too, if some of the other Aussie girls on the board might like to add their two-bob's worth ? :)
Incidently, Nicole Kidman was a one time 'cover girl'. ;D

So was my darlin Brian Mannix !!! For a Cutex promo.
I have it and Nicoles stored away somewhere - along with a few others.
I had a couple of poems published in Dolly around 1982 or 83.
It really was a bible wasnt it ! We learned EVERTHING our mums wouldnt tell us !!
It is still being published - but I dont think it can teach much to the 13 year olds of todays world ! They appear to already be practising !!
Subject: Re: Message for Mandamoo
Dolly was the one. I couldn't wait to buy it each month - and somehow I think I vaguely remember the Brian Mannix picture.
BMG, have you read Dolly lately? It has either changed drastically since we read it - or we are older and times have changed I guess. My niece is 13 and when she came back home with her family for a visit last year (she lives in the Middle East) she wanted to buy it. Her Mum (my sister) said she could but because I didn't want her to buy it she wouldn't. I finally decided she could read it (I just don't want her to grow up really!) and then her 22 yr old brother didn't want her to!

Hiya Gecko - nice to see you back :) <hugs>
I admit I havent read a current issue since the 80's.
It was giving us advice about sex, pregancy, contraception, relationships etc - in my eyes before we had actually started to enter into anything like that in real life - so in my eyes it was preparing and helping us.
But now my friends tell me they have sexually active 13 year old daughters so my fear is that Dolly is redundant - these girls already know all this and dont need advice columns.
That scares me !
I always loved the poetry page at the back. Some great subjects were covered. I cut so many out and stuck them in a scrapbook.
I am sure you remember the Brian promo !! It had a huge tear out poster that unfolded about 4 times. And he was covered in cutex makeup !! Scarey :)

I don't remember the Cutex promo....I was buying the mag in the late 70's, so that probably explains why !
Heehee ! You're right about learning ALL the stuff ours mums kept us 'sheltered' from ! ;D We must have been incredibly naive and ignorant back then....compared, as you say, to the teens of today ! Scary alright ! :o
You had your poetry published BMG ? That's cool !
Actually.....now I come to think of it, I DO remember the Brain promo. I don't think I would've seen it in Dolly though, unless it was when my cousin went through her Dolly 'stage' a few years after me and I saw it in hers. :-/
I also have vague memories of it being called 'Dolly Bird' originally, but I could be making that up.... ;D

Nice to be back. Did ya miss me!! :)
On our favourite subject of Brian - my Mum gave me an old box of my school things the other day to go through and throw out. I couldn't stop thinking of you BMG as I was going through all these old high school books. They were all covered in pictures of Brian Mannix, Icehouse, 1927 - all the gorgeous boys. I was looking at an assignment I did in Year 9 where we had to write our own magazine - along the lines of Dolly. Guess who my pinup boy was in the magazine BMG? Bet you can't guess! ;D When I saw that assignment I thought of you.

Like the other Aussie girls, I was also a Dolly reader. My teenage daughters read it now along with "Girlfriend". It certainly is different to when I was reading it. Some of the topics they cover Include:
Date Rape
Incest
How to be a good kisser :-*
Bulimia
Why do I cut myself?
Oral Sex - you live and you learn!
Drugs
I discuss some of the articles with the girls. They also study these magazines at their school in their English class. I do know a few mothers that refuse to let their girls read Dolly but I figure they're going to be reading their friends' copies anyway.
Subject: Re: Message for Mandamoo
Blimey Jaytee the subject matter sure has "moved on" since I last read it !!!!!
Gecko darls I did miss ya !! I hope you dont throw out those school things !! I have kept what I still had in a box - to gaze at in a few more decades !!
Bwian wasnt my poster boy till after I left school (84 onwards). My folders were covered in David Bowie, Dragon, Split Enz and Aussie Crawl.
But from 84 to 87 my entire bedroom walls and ceiling were dominated by Bwian !!!!
Mandamoo - yep I had a couple of seriously tragic lovelorn poems published in Dolly - they were officially my first ones in print. Have had better (and worse) ones published since then - but inspiration dried up in the 90's. I think the last one I had published was just after the Port Arthur Massacre.
I think I have a couple of my Dolly ones on my home page - lemme see if I can cut and paste.
..........ok now that I have read them I am mortally embarrassed - but what the heck - I was 15 !!
INSOMNIA
Lying here in my bed
Almost bored to tears
Nearly midnite, still awake
Is it sleep I fear.
Counting sheep, sleeping pills
Problem still unsolved
Mind still sorting lifes small trials
Why get so involved ?
Watch a bit of television
Read a Mills and Boon
One would think with me so bored
My eyes would be closed soon.
Digital clock beside my bed
Tells me it's almost two
Write a letter to a friend
What else can I do ?
Read some diaries from past years
Re-live the memories
Remembering all the good times
Of cruising on high seas.
Four oclock. Why sleep now ?
Alarm must soon be due
A sleepless night not unusual
Just wont look as good as new.
LETTERS
Please let there be some mail in the box
Let there be a letter from you.
If I dont get word from anyone soon
I dont know what I will do.
Sometimes I feel like Charlie Brown
An empty mailbox makes you sad
At least he's got Snoopy to cheer him up
There's no one here feeling that glad.
Wait a minute, the postman is stopping
My heart grows eager and bolder
Could it be a card from the man of my dreams ?
No - just a note to the householder.
:-/

Thanks for sharing your poems BMG. Don't be embarrassed. :D 8) I'm so envious of people that can delve into themselves and are able to translate their feelings into poetry or song lyrics. I couldn't compose a piece of meaningful prose if my life depended on it ! ::)
I'd love to read your one on the Port Arthur tragedy !
Subject: Re: Message for Mandamoo
Awww thanks Mandamoo :) I do get embarrassed tho ! Specially when I read someone elses and realise mine are soo wussy !!
I am proud of the Port Arthur one tho. It won a state wide poetry contest held by our main newspaper over here. And it holds a lot of significance cos I actually dreamt about the events at Port Arthur for several weeks before it actually happened. I wrote it the night of the tragedy - before I found out that I did actually know a victim.
Sorry its nothing to do with Dolly !!
PORT ARTHUR PAIN
Guns kill
Guns cause pain
Man kills
Man pleads insane
Grief felt
Across the earth
Grief found
Even here in Perth
Dont know
Anyone there
Dont know
If they know I care
Guns shoot
People die
He still lives
While we still cry
Subject: Re: Message for Mandamoo
Notwithstanding the poetry, BMG :).......
The posts that preceeded that are scary !
You gals are freaking me out ;D

You're welcome BMG. :)
Wow ! Thanks for sharing this one too. Congratulations ! I can see why you won.......it's very poignant.
That's pretty spooky to have dreamt about it all beforehand, I have to say too ! :o So sorry to hear that you knew one of the victims. :(
Hey.....I just realised we're coming up to the anniversary. Sometime at the end of April, I think. :-/

Trust me - I have ben in enough medical waiting rooms to know exactly what it is I am happy to be missing out on ! :D
"86.2 ways to tell for sure that he is cheating on you" (apprently because he scratches his chin in a certain way when you ask him) ::)
"Why isn't he game to ask me out?" (I'm only sitting with my 14 friends who all have boyfriends with BMW's)
"Why aren't my breasts bigger?" (Because they are smaller)
That sort of thing ? ;D
