Now, they have yellow lights too.  :o They're kinda like the traffic arrows, but there's no arrow part, it's only a line that shows you which way to go around ;) ;)

I like the ones that are Ford bodies because the local police department takes them to my father and his co-workers for service and maintenance and in turn it creates money for our family.
I also prefer the type of police cars that drive by, rather than call for "pulling over', haha.
When I was learning to drive, my classmate was at the wheel and she was pulled over--scared stiff she'd done something wrong.  But the cop wanted to tell her she was doing a great job keeping the car on the road!  Talk about unnecessary stress! The nerve of some people!!

In the US there is only really one type, the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Ford is the last of the US carmakers that still makes a rear-wheel drive, full or mid-sized car with a police package and a strong & reliable enough motor for heavy-duty police use.
Most police orgs like rear-wheel over front-wheel drive because of the more predictable handling characteristics of RWD cars.

The CHP still has some Z28 Camaro's as Intercept vehicles, MD state police has used unmarked supercharged Thunderbirds and turbo 300ZX's to catch speeders (sneaky aren't they?). Falls Church, VA police used turbo Volvo 740 station wagons as cruisers years back.
For all out speed, the Dodge/Plymouth 440 Police Interceptor Polaras of the late 60's & early 70's were the most powerful and fastest, good for up to 150mph or so.
I like the ones that are NOT in my rear view mirror
;D

In the late '80s over here in Ohio, I once saw them using a grey Mustang. I use to hear about them, but it took a while to finally see one!  :o

All of them around here are Chevy Caprice's.  I rarely see a Ford.

Yep, there are still some police depts using the last of the Chevy Caprices (Chevy stoped making the police pkg for the Caprice back in '94). These cars are getting long in the tooth but are fairly reliable and fast. You'll probably start to see them show up at police, city/county/state gov'mnt auctions soon, good way to pick up your own "Bluesmobile" for cheap ;), before some one turns them all into taxicabs!

Yeah, the red Torino w/white swoosh strip was a cool car, but odd choice for "undercover" cops, not very stealthy.
The S&H show made this car and the red/white stripe option a VERY popular at Ford in the late 70's, used to see copys of it all over when I was a kid. It came with a hot (for the time) 351 Windsor motor and 3:81 gears, so you coud do a nice smokey burnout and impress your buddies...
An original example of one now will bring in over $12k in good condition! With the movie coming out expect that price to go even higher!

My friend Kevin used to have a Chevy Caprice...probably still does.  That thing was a tank, and people would literally stop in their tracks when he drove, thinking it was an actual police car ;D

I think u need to go on www.capriceclassic.com and do some more home work. The '95-96' chevy caprice was by far the BEST police vehicle ever made. In fact, that caprice w/the LT-1 engine, is still used by many police agencies throughout the U.S. I live in the northeast where Mass State police still have them on the road as chase cars.  check it out.

I think, Gumby was refering to the fastest police car, not the best overall.

Most policemen that were around at the time to drive them will tell you that a Mopar 440 interceptor was the all out most powerful motor in any police package, at any time, over the LT-1 or anything else, period.
If Chrysler gets back into the RWD sedan business (as it looks like they will) you'd better beleive they're going to drop one of those Hemi or Magnum motors in with a police package.
Face it, Chevy/GM isn't even in the game anymore, the old Caprice Classics are getting a bit old for the game.

Heck, here in IL, they'll use anything.  Especially on the tollways:  Expeditions, Mustangs, Volvos, Camaros, etc.  My best friend and I even got stopped by a station wagon once for making an illegal u-turn.  Luckily, he let us go when we showed him her car was about to die :P

i drive cab and all the cabs in my town are ex police cruisers. there either chevy caprices or the ford crown vic interceptors. i love the fords. when i'm rushing out to the airport i like to open her up. even with 200k kms that car can still move.

one time i was a one night "guest" at the local constabulary for being a little too rowdy at a party. i was lead away in the ford. with those police sheilds, there's very little room in the back seat.

I used to work for the cab company about 8 years ago and they bought a few late 80's/early 90's Caprices from the state patrol with (I believe) the LT-1 5.7 V8 and converted them into taxicabs. I can tell you first-hand that these cars had some BALLS!!! (I was always hoping that just once, someone would get into my cab and whip out a badge and say, "FOLLOW THAT CAR!")

Yeah, the Chevy Crap-piece.  Look out for flying hubcaps!

The Crown Vic is nice, but just try to convince them that the radio transmit alternator whine is the car's fault - even when you can hear the same whine coming from under the hood!  Nothing like a bad Ford alternator.....

Corner strobes are fun too.  Who needs a Taser when you can zap the bad guys with a few exposed strobe power cables!

My favorite was the DARE car painted all black with the misspelled "This car sized from a drug dealer" on BOTH sides.
