Subject: Encounters with "celebrities"

Written By: Old_Comedywriter on 12/27/03 at 04:58 p.m.

Anyone have any memorable encounters with celebrities?

Ray Parker Jr. came into where I worked in Glendale, CA to have a mobile phone installed - and our service manager said "I don't care WHO you are - you'll have to make an appointment!"

Was asked by Jenilee Harrison where to register at a March of Dimes walk in Burbank in the 1980s.  She looked like she had just fired her makeup artist...

This one's for Melhi...got a radio installer's-eye view of Michael Nesmith's motor home about 20 years ago in Glendale while he was having a phone installed.  No hidden contraband, but we did come across some "Zippy the Pinhead" comic books.

My wife knows Richard Simmons and Peter Noone.

My husband and I have met
BB King during Mardi Gras at a party.
Troy Aikman at a concert, I didn't have a pen!!
Tommy Lee Jones in front of the Reata Restaurant downtown.
Butch Johnson (Older Cowboys player) at a local festival.
Deon Sanders (which my husband was upset with him) he was real rude to anyone that approached him. My then 7 and 6 year old boys were heartbroken.
Robert Urich (Vegas) He was related to my husbands family.
Teddy Sevales(Kojak) in Hollywood, coming out of his dressing room.
Rachel McLeach- she was a personal trainer for my hubby when he was younger.
First Lady-Barbara Bush we met her at a Friends of the Library dinner.
Jimmy Carter-Ex-President-at the restaurant that my hubby was working in.
John Goodman during Mardi Gras, in a resturant.

That's about it. Several politicians but there're not famous. Football players aren't really famous but I only included a few.

You know, I could have sworn I saw Kenny Rogers hundreds of times.  Turns out it was probably just one of these guys.

One of my wife's cousins is Pernell Roberts.

The Pope held mass in an open field one half mile from my house in the '80s.  He drove right by me in his Pope mobile.

I saw Geroge Bush Sr on a Washington DC metro bus in the 80's leaving Andrews Air Force Base with the US Embassy personel who were held captive by the Iranians for 444 days.  George Sr was VP at that time.

While working at a CD store in Pasadena, Ca met:
Robert DuVall, hunched over in strange baby blue tux. Had a beautiful brazilian, Chilean or Argentinian babe with him at least 25 yrs younger than him. Bought many latin jazz and 50's bop tunes. Very cool guy..
Mario Andretti, bought lots of Elton John and classic rock stuff.
Terence Trent D'Arby, the store was dead, when approached he wanted to make sure that no attention be attracted to him (no one cared or notice except me!) and acted pretty weird. Bought $400 worth or acid jazz/trip-hop stuff. Came back the next day and bought another $400 of rap.
Bill Cosby, asked to hear almost every jazz CD in the store, kinda of a pain.
Met lots of bands for "in stores" Trent Reznor, Barenaked Ladies, mazzy star, etc.

When I was 13, I went to a Christmas craft show with my Mom, and as we were just outside the doors, there was a group of women entering as well, and one of them said "Excuse me," to us. My Mom pointed out to me that that lady was Barbara Ann Scott, a former Olympic figure skater from the 1940s.

During a grade 10 History field trip, we went to Parliament Hill for part of the day, and while we were having the tour, a few of my classmates spotted Brian Mulroney walking down these stairs and called out to him. He turned around and wished us a "merry Christmas".

At the L.A airport, I thought I saw Ellen Degeneres walking through the crowd. The woman was wearing a jean jacket with a flower print on it, and she had short blond and she seemed to even have the same nose. She had her head down and was frowning. I kept turning back to look at the lady in disbelief, but I was also surprised that nobody else was looking at her so maybe it really wasn't her, or maybe L.A people are so use to seeing celebrities......

I don't know if this counts, but Tom Cruise and I had the same 3rd grade teacher.....different times, of course! (he lived in many different places growing up including Canada)  While I was in the 3rd grade, I don't remember my teacher ever mentioning his name, but I do remember that we did quite a bit of acting in my class. It wasn't until I was in the 7th grade that I learned that she taught Tom Cruise when my mother bumped into her one day.

I've met a few of the Carolina Panthers players...my dad works at a Harris-Teeter (grocery store for those of you not familiar with the place ;)) down in Charlotte and Dan Morgan comes through there all the time...

My aunt has met quite a few NASCAR drivers...Kyle Petty, Mark Martin, a few others...

No one else I can recall...

I met Joe Jackson (the musician) in a nightclub about 20 years ago, he was very friendly and a thoroughly decent bloke. I met Henry Rollins (US punk star/actor) at an airport, I was drunk but he was quite polite when I spoke to him, although surprisingly very short in stature. Anyone remember Kid Creole and the Coconuts? Well at another airport I met Kid Creole with his wife, apparently a former Coconut, and their kids. He was really friendly and happy to talk to me as we queued for a taxi. I met Will Carling (UK sports star - former captain of the England rugby team) at a big corporate event in Spain organised by my employer. He was being paid to be there but he was miserable and unpleasant to everybody - what a git!

With my kids I've also met Barney the dinosaur...he was also hostile and rude. Only kidding, he was great but he didn't speak, which my kids found confusing.

Finally, I met Yasmin le Bon at a motorway service station once, she's the supermodel wife of Simon le Bon of Duran Duran. She was very tall, perfectly dressed and very beautiful...she was like a different species to the rest of the bedraggled mass of humanity in there, including me.

I didn't ask any of them for an autograph as I don't really see the point.

Yesterday while shopping at the post Christmas sales I was looking at CDs and there was a Best of Kenny Rogers CD on a stand.  My 15 year old daughter took one look at the picture of Kenny on the CD and said to me "who is that? - I just saw him walking around this store!"  They're everywhere!! :o :D

I work in SoHo in New York and meet people all the time.  I've met Yoko Ono, Matt Dillon, Whoopi Goldberg and  Susan Sarandon.  I also bumped right into Alice Cooper and he's very nice.  :)

forgot to mention that i once spoke briefly with brendan leonard's sister, megan.  she was really nice, and she even answered my extremely lame questions. :)

I used to work in a restaraunt next door to Universal Studios in CA called Victoria Station.  Sometimes, the actors would come over to meet with reporters or agents on our patio.  I've had the pleasure of meeting:

Jason and Justine Bateman (he was much nicer than she)
That annoying little red headed kid who was on Different Strokes toward the end.  He used to stand on the table and sing.
Frank Sinatra ate dinner there once before a concert at Universal.  The place was actually closed at the time to set up for dinner but who was going to tell "the Chairman of the Board" that he couldn't come in?? :)  Not I.

I also ran into one of my favorite teen heartthrobs at the Galleria:   Andy Gibb (and two of his biggest body guards)
I saw him at a furniture store and was so star struck that I couldn't even say anything.  He was very nice though and said "Hello" but kept on going.

8) I worked for a resort and received a call from a man who was making a reservation. When I asked his name, he replyed Robert Conrad. I asked "the Robert Conrad?" he replyed.. thats what my mom says... come to find out it was him and he asked I not say anything, but of course me being the mouth of the south told my supervisor who then in turn when thru the channels and had the red carpet rolled out for him.... me being the idiot I am... ordered flowers with my own money and had them delivered to his accomodations prior to his arrival... needless to say.. I never even got a thank-you for it... I never learn....

Recently, Ed Asner was on our flight to LA.  He just sat in the airport with everyone else reading a newspaper.

Sean Astin (I think) at the airport in San Fran (on our way back from Hawaii)

Susan Powter at the airport in Chicago.

I can't remember his name, but he always play a mob guy, at FAO Schwarz in NYC. (I'll come back and edit if I remember)

Various band members through my brother, noone really famous, though.

Andy Richter in High School (he went to our rival)

I've never met some national celebs, only local ones who eat at the restaurants. But I know somebody who went to a convenience store and saw Reggie Miller buying a Coke. He didn't bother to ask for an autograph because of nerves. I probably who have reacted the same way.  :(
