Subject: Music & messages

Written By: Jarlnian_DelAxle on 12/01/03 at 02:55 p.m.

I was listening to the radio today (since I drive for a living, I do lots of that), when the song "Mack the Knife" came on.  I started thinking: I wonder how many people know it's about a serial killer?  Looking through the half-dozen CD's in the truck with me, I found plenty of songs with lyrics that, if people listened, could be considered rather disturbing.  Some examples:

A woman turns her 18-year-old daughter (in the original, she was 15) into a call girl.

2 gamblers argue, one goes home, confronts the cheater in a bar, & shoots him to death.

A teen tries to seduce a catholic girl.

A song about the neighborhood drug dealer.

A girl is killed in a plane crash on her way to marry her fiance, who is in the army.

What I can only call the carnival freak show from hell.

since you didnt actully write the songs they are here, I will lol

"2 gamblers argue, one goes home, confronts the cheater in a bar, & shoots him to death."
That would be Stagger Lee made famous by Lloyd Price

"A teen tries to seduce a catholic girl."
Only the good die young-Billy Joel

"A song about the neighborhood drug dealer."
Captain Jack-Billy Joel

"A girl is killed in a plane crash on her way to marry her fiance, who is in the army."
While this sounds like James Taylors fire and rain, it isnt, since James Taylor (who the song is about,...its a true story) was in a mental institution, not the army...plus, she was jus this girlfriend.....hmm..I want to say its Tell Laura that I love her, but thats not right either...Im nto sure...

"What I can only call the carnival freak show from hell."

Very good, Billy!  You got all 4 (not that many people know who Captain Jack was), but "Tell Laura I Love Her" isn't the one--in that one, he died in a race.

The first time I heard Karn Evil 9, I was stunned the radio station would actually air the lyrics!  ELP had some SERIOUS issues!

I'd have thought the song about the neighbourhood drug dealer would have been "The Old Dope Pedlar" by Tom Lehrer ;-)

"He gives the kids free samples, because he knows full well
That today's young innocent faces will be tomorrow's clientele"

Sheer genius

I've got a feeling this may be 'Ebony Eyes', not the Bob Welch song, but by The Everlys...the saga of Flight 1203 written by the irrepressible John D Loudermilk...

Best line...'They may have run into some turbulent weather and had to alter their course...'

Banned over here due to 'poor taste'...!

CS got "Fancy", but she's not the original artist (only version I've ever heard, though).  Anyone else notice there are 2 versions--one edited (I assume for radio) & one with an extra verse.

Paul got it--"Ebony Eyes", by the Everly Brothers.  Talk about depressing. :( That wasn't a true story...was it?

Heck--they benned EVERYTHING in the UK! :) Wasn't Rod Stewart's "Tonight's the Night" also banned?  ;D

Censorship sucks.  >:(

Other stuff in my collection: a shootout between a young gunfighting outlaw & an Arizona ranger chasing him, an ode to a Toronto strip club :) , a DJ is driving too fast on the way to work & kills himself in a car wreck, and the story of a hotel/casino burning down.

Well, the BBC (who were the only UK radio broadcaster at the time when 'Ebony Eyes' came out) were the self-styled paragons of good taste...or so they would have us believe...!

Anything dealing with death or injury was immediately out - 'Tell Laura I Love Her', (didn't stop it from reaching #1), 'Teen Angel', 'Leader Of The Pack', etc.

'Poor taste' also extended to (believe it or not) 'The Monster Mash' which got a ban slapped on it in 1962...

Yet that ode to madness, Napoleon XIV's 'They're Coming To Take Me Away...' - no problems!

As far as I remember, I don't think Rod ever got troubled with an airplay ban, but by then (thankfully!) we had more than the BBC to choose from...

My favourite? Jimmy Cross' 'I Want My Baby Back' - a truly 'sicko' record which borders on class...(no, that never got played here either...!)

OK, I realize my collection has some pretty obscure stuff in it.

BTW, the line was "Spread your wings & let me come inside"

Neither, though I have both--"Big Iron", by Marty Robbins.  It's probably before your time--came out in 1960.  It's country.

Nope.  The song title actually mnames the club.

Another old country song--Stonewall Jackson's "BJ the DJ", from 1963.

Yes--and today is actually the anniversary of that fire (no, I didn't know when I posted...I only found out this morning on the local classic rock station).  According to Deep Purple, some idiot at a Frank Zappa concert fired a flare gun, which ignited the building.  And yes, that IS what happened.

:o :o :oIt was banned over there?Boy,you sure missed out!Anyway,as Dave barry has pointed out,the song doesn't actually say the plane crashed. The guy is mourning the girl's death before he knows if she's dead!LOLThink more along the lines of Amelia earhart,if you know what I mean.A group called the Beverly sisters(ii kid you not!)did an answer song called "Flight 1203".It says the girl survived!Cheers!

Banned as in 'no airplay' Marian, but (as I no doubt need remind you) the song was issued on the back of 'Walk Right Back' (as a double A-side), which duly hit #1 here - so I'd guess a lot of people would have heard 'Ebony Eyes' in a roundabout way...

I've heard of 'Flight 1203' (but not actually heard it)...I would assume that the Beverly Sisters (obviously an 'Everly' play!) are nothing to do with our long-standing MOR trio of the same name...!

You betcha! BBC morals at play again! Although I gather the song was played quite a bit on our pirate stations (illegal broadcasters who were stationed on ships just outside British waters, and who gave the BBC a run for their money at the time)...

Sadly, the record didn't break, but the pirates did manage to single-handedly (due to heavy airplay) make a monster hit of 'Leader Of The Pack'...the BBC looked on, bemused...

;D ;DWell,Ok,no airplay for "Ebony eyes'so you wouldn't have been able to hear it in your car on the way to the airport :oI have the 45 and picture sleeve, and unless i'm mistaken,Ebony eyes was designated the A-side.But "Walk Right back' was one position higher on the charts than "Ebony Eyes".I wonder if the song's popularity was affected by the fate of the US figure skating team.Cheeers!
