Subject: A Political Poll: Leftie, rightie, or neither?

Written By: @ssKicker on 10/09/03 at 03:28 p.m.

How do you vote? Or if you're under 18, how WOULD you vote?
I'm only 14, but I'm still a Lib Dem myself. I reckon they're about the only party I can trust these days. Firstly, Labour has pretty much shown us its true colours. And the Tories make promises they can't fulfil. IMO the lefties have gone right-wing and the righties have gone left-wing. Funny that.
So, what about you guys?

When I was your age a$$kicker, I was a signed-up active member of the Young Liberals... I'm still kind of left-wing, I guess - but not state-centred.  Left and right designations don't quite fit.  Still a LibDem, though too cynical to get involved any more (having said that, I'm quizmaster tonight at a LibDem fundraiser - but that's more because I enjoy being quizmaster, and my mother's organized it)

Great topic @$$kicker, was think of posting something similar.

personnally I've voted left(NDP), right(Conservative) and center(Liberal), though in Canada those parties are all lefties to the Americans.  In the last election (last week) I voted NDP (left).  too bad my candidate got only 275 votes of 7000.

A disillusioned taxpayer writes...

Once these main parties - doesn't matter which, or from whatever country - start making themselves accountable to Joe Public and no-one else, will you get me near a polling station again...

As an aside, our MP holds the record for the least amount of times that a minister has actually said anything in the House...not even his mother knows what he sounds like...

I think Bobby's got the right idea...

It could be worse, mate. My local MP is a member of the Scottish National Party. (The choice of the racist! :D)

Right, entirely, cannot stand the left side of things...

but is it not Winston Churchill who said, "He who is under 30 and republican is heartless, and he who is over 30 and democrat is brainless."

So A$$kicker, youve some time, and you could even take Phil as a prime example towards Churchill's thinking.

Hehe... I spent ages arguing with a supply teacher we had for English about why that phrase makes no sense. He firmly believed that everyone should "know their place" etc. etc.

Interesting.

Last year I was about -0.8 and -0.3.  This year:

Economic Left/Right: 3.38
Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.87

Guess the different situations of the world have forced me to change my views or something.

well, this quiz is a joke...I just took it....I cant beleive some of these questions (and the fact that the answers are only disagree, agree, and the extremes).....the political ideology system is much more complex than that......I also cant beleive that they are considering some of thewse questions political (WHich a bunch I dont think are at all), and that some of the questions are very much so one sided the way they are phrased....I mean, i dont think that I follow the Republican ideology to a tee, but I sure cant say that I can "agree strongly" on a question that says "Should this be the highest priority"...I might think its a priority, but not the highest.....I think that this is not an accuret way to do this at all......
plus, there are a few ambiguously worded questions......

does anyone have a better test?

anyway, heres what I got:

Economic Left/Right: 1.88
Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.72

that means that Im more towards the center than I would have said...I might be on certain issues, but definitly not on overall....I feel that this quiz is not an accuret representation at all

Hehehe, you're more "liberal" than I am ;D

Absolutely it is not an accurate representation.  Like most web-based tests it's just a "general idea" of where you stand.  There are way too many complex issues and way too many individual preferences to accurately quantify a person's "left/rightness".

I think you'll find it's:

"If a man is not a socialist by the time he is twenty, he has no heart. If he is not a conservative by the time he is 40, he has no brain."

...though IIRC it was Ringo Starr who said "My head tells me to vote Liberal, my heart tells me to vote Labour but my wallet tells me to vote Conservative"

My cynicism came largely with the self-serving student politics while at university: no real beliefs, just the will to say pretty much anything to get into power.  And these are the sort of people running things ATM :-(

BUT (and this is a big "but") - IMO if you do nothing about it; if you fail to vote; if you don't get involved in the political process... if all you do is abstain and be apathetic: THEN YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO COMPLAIN.

Good point!
In fact, strangely enough a quote from The Simpsons just about sums it up:

Newsreader: ...And the bill for a curfew for the under-70s has been passed, with just one vote in it!
Marge: See Homer, I told you you should have used your vote.
Homer: Eh, wouldn't have made a difference.

Wow I'm much more left than I thought though the quiz does kind of skew things
Economic Left/Right: -5.50
Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.31
I'm more of a leftie than Ghandi or my current PM.
Right there with the Dalai Lama.
Must be the pot smoking, gay, abortion questions...Oh Canada.

Al Gore got cheated
Mike Bloomberg is the Mayor of NYC and we are all suffering.
I'm never voting again-what's the point?

And complain I don't . . . For me, all political parties are as bad as each other with their own seperate agendas (I'm talking about British politics but I'm sure it works the same in all parts of the world). There is no point in complaining about the inevitable.

Yes, Bloomberg was a democrat before he was a republican...but I still havent doubted him where others have, unlike most politicians, he wasn't trying to get re-elected, he was trying to save us from the budget crisis, which he did, or at least made the problem less severe...what kind of person disagrees with the current status, and disagrees with whats needed to make it better?

Which I would wholeheartedly agree with, Phil...but when all major political parties appear to stand for one thing, i.e., 'Screw Joe Public, let's see what we can cream for ourselves out of this racket'...that's when I start to ask, why get involved at all...

As I've mentioned before...I'm just a bleedin' taxpayer...

Not that I'm disagreeing with you Paul, but WTF do we (and by "we", I mean all the Western nations) think that our "democracy" makes us morally superior to less, er, enlightened places?

Subject: Re: A Political Poll: Leftie, rightie, or neither?

Written By: @ssKicker on 10/18/03 at 03:31 p.m.

There is no 'perfect' system and there probably never will be, but here in the West we have one of the best possible political systems. But you're making a good point- that does not make our countries superior to others, for the simple reason that people who live in dictatorships can't do anything about their system.

I decided to go Tory on Friday (the Libs are going a bit too far left), so I'll take the test again and see if my results are any different...

Economic Left/Right: 3.38
Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.64

I've moved over five units to the right. I wonder when that happened.
