Subject: Daylight Savings "Fall Back" SUCKS!
So WHAT if we get an extra hour of sleep for ONE night...our children get out of school and it's dark....WHY does America have this crap and who else hates it....I'd rather leave it on "Spring Forward" all the time ???
Subject: Re: Daylight Savings "Fall Back" SUCKS!
Luckily for us Hoosiers, we don't have to turn our clocks either way, since most of us don't observe Daylight Savings Time and are on Eastern Standard Time all year long. I really feel for those who have to change time, because I feel DST is another example of the legislature "playing God". :-/

Changing the clocks back here means that the children come home from school whilst its still light. It does mean that its only just light when we're leaving though.
From other messages I've read on different threads it looks like your school system is different to the British one. Here children (at Primary level anyway) start at about 9.00 and finish at 3.15 or 3.30 depending on the school. Also the school tends to be only a mile or so away from home. Even for Secondary schools it is unusual to travel very far (if you live in a reasonable size town anyway). One or two people here made comments as to what time they have to leave to catch the bus.
Perhaps someone could explain the school times to me and see if this makes a difference about peoples feeling toward changing the clocks.

Ah! The twice-yearly tradition of fiddling with the clocks...it was mooted a few years back that it was going to be abolished, but that idea's obviously hit the back burner...
I'm sure I read somewhere that it was first started (over here at any rate) as a temporary measure to assist the farmers' harvests whilst WWI was ongoing...but can't quite remember for sure...
It's still a pain in the rear changing all them clocks and timers over, though...

Hey, this means the clock in my car will finally be right! For six months or so at least... Most of the other clocks in our house automatically set themselves by satellite, we'll just have to reset the microwave and well, that's it.

i'd rather gain an hour of sleep...i actually like losing an hour of daylight, because i really hate waking up and finding that my room is filled with sunlight...it's too bright and happy when it's a monday morning and i'm half asleep. :P
Subject: Re: Daylight Savings "Fall Back" SUCKS!
When the morning comes during the fall & winter,it's still dark.

I think it pwns. It's worse when you have to put the clocks FORWARD, because you miss an hour.
Once, it happened on a Sunday, and my mum got up at what she thought was 9AM, so she could go to church (which starts at 10AM and lasts for an hour.)
I think you can work the rest of it out- she went up there and bumped into everyone else coming back. ;D

I think it's stupid and respect the states that choose not to participate. A few years ago I did some research on the internet as to the origin, I thought it may have been becasue it helped with our (then) agricultural society but read that it was done to conserve electricity back in the World War days.
Subject: Re: Daylight Savings "Fall Back" SUCKS!
How can it conserve electricity?? It's darker in the mornings now, so you have to put the lights on earlier...

Actually since we "fall back" that gives us more us more daylight in the morning.
Subject: Re: Daylight Savings "Fall Back" SUCKS!
The "Time" has almost arrived...I HATE this...1 more hour of sleep in the morning does NOT justify 6 months of earlier darkness in the Afternoon..this sucks..IMO ::)

Fortunately I live on the West Coast of Australia and we have always voted to not have it. We gave it a test run for one year in the 80's and dumped it straight away.
Most of the East Coast has it - except Queensland.
I have never seen the point of it. I hated it when I lived on the east coast - trying to settle down at night to watch the mid evening movie - while its still broad daylight outside - stupid.
I live in a country - and in particular a state - that gets an average of 11-12 hours of sunlight a day - we dont need more.
The majority of the population these days works within flexible working hours. At my job (which employs 25000) I can come to work anytime between 7 and 9.30am, and leave anytime between 3 and 7pm.
Even if I worked a basic 9 - 5 shift, I would still get home with 90 minutes daylight in winter and over 2 and a half hours daylight in summer - who the hell needs more ? If I really truly wanted more I would work 8-4 or 7-3. I have yet to work out why I would ever need more.
And for those who say "oh I want to play sports after work" - well most sports I know can be played under lights !!
Its a ridiculous energy saving method that was designed for the northern hemisphere during the war - I have never understood why it was even considered in Australia - the sunniest nation in the world.
Karen - cant remember what time kids go to school in the US - here its 8.30 to 3 (or 4 for highschool from memory - its been a LONG time !!!). But some can travel via a train and 2 buses to get to their school so I imagine they start out in the dark - which could be rather disconcerting to a youngster.

My school starts at 7:30. I have to leave my house at 6:45 and it's dark, but if I set my clocks back an hour then it would really be 5:45 so it would be darker, and if I set them forward an hour it would really be 7:45 so it would be lighter. This is a very confusing subject!! ::)
