Subject: A question for the Aussies

Written By: CatwomanofV on 09/14/03 at 06:35 p.m.

D.C.'s daughter just came back from a trip Down Under. She brought us back a jar of vegemite. Our question is, what do we do with it?

Make a vegemite sandwich!

She just smiled, and gave me a... sorry. :-[

I honestly don't know.  I'm not an Aussie. :)

Hi Cat

L-15 is correct....

Bread and butter, and then a light covering of Vegemite.

Don't put on too much, it is a very strong taste, as you will discover.

Yep, it smells funny, and tastes strong.  It is like anything, it is an acquired taste.

I love it, but then I am wierd.  I am from the Southern Hemisphere  ;D :P  ;D

If you really can't stand it, and you have cats and/or dogs, I guarantee they will lick it from your fingers until the jar is emptied  8)

Vegemite on hot buttered toast - YUM!  Fuss is right though. You only need a light covering, especially if you haven't had it before.  When you've tried it, you will have to tell us what you think.

I don't think there'd be a household in Australia without a jar of vegemite in the fridge.  Our family loves vegemite - my eldest daughter spreads it so thickly I gag watching her eat it.  She eats it by the spoonful out of the jar :P  Toast and vegemite is yummy or add a slice of cheese and melt it under the grill.  A friend of mine also swears that if you have a painful mouth ulcer put a dab of vegemite on it and you will get instant relief.  Never tried that one myself.  ENJOY!

Despite posting the above link, I have to admit that I love vegemite very much having been brought up on it.  I think if you use butter, and not margarine on your toast for your first try, you might be less shocked.  It is an acquired taste.  Tell us your verdict CW.

Okay, I know I said I liked vegemite - but eating it by the spoonful out of the jar :o  Its flavour is a little bit intense for this.  If I tried that it would probably make my eyes water.  I think I will stick to it spread thin on my toast :)

More or less the self-same stuff as 'Marmite' here...

Yes, delicious on bread/toast - but, as many have said, must be done thinly...

Also very delicious on pancakes...

Similarly - there is another almost identical product - "Promite" - each of these has a slightly different twang to it's tang  8)

It's also yummy to toss par boiled potatoes in a little Marmite as well as oil then roasting them.Marmite crisps are to die for but you can't beat marmite on toast.

ewww Marmite and Promite are totally icky !

And I dont know anyone who keeps vegemite in the fridge - so thats a first for me !

Seriously tho - I have had vegemite on toast every morning of my life since I was first put on solid food !  Even for the 3 years I lived overseas - my dad had it shipped over to the US and UK for me.

Every family also has the "strange" ways to consume it.

Ones from my family:

Dad loves vegemite, lettuce and honey sandwiches.

Mum loves vegemite, cheese and honey on toast.

I love vegemite, mayo and chicken in a toasted sandwich.

I have friends who swear by vegemite and banana sandwiches - but that grosses me out !!

And on a hot summer day in front of the puter - nothing beats vegemite worms getting licked off a SAO !  (but that will start a whole discussion on SAO's !!!).

You guys have me very curious about this vegemite stuff.  I might have tried it when I lived in Australia for 6 months when I was a young girl, but I don't remember.  I wonder if any specialty stores in my area would carry it...?  :)

In Queensland we keep everything in the fridge!  We had three 30 degree+ days this past week.  I just think refrigeration keeps everything fresher and less likely to grow bacteria.

I'm a Queenslander, but I have to say that I have never heard of anyone keeping vegemite in the fridge.  You make a good point about our hot weather (and hasn't this last week been hot) but trust me, I don't think any bacteria would want to grow and live in vegemite :D

A SAO is a square, dry cracker.

BMG must have thought wrong - you can't make worms with SAOs because they don't have holes. Vita-Weats have holes.

And I have also been known to eat spoonfuls of Vegemite straight from the jar - although only teaspoons.

I been makin worms with me SAOs for decades !  MrG you are buying SAO's in the wrong place !!  They have holes in every place I have ever bought them !!  Never had a vitawheat - too grainy for my liking

Jaytee - did ya ever luv the blond hunk in the 80's SAO's ad ? ?    :P

Three days of 30+ ??  Man you should try Jan/Feb in WA !!  Tho I have to admit - your humidity is on average 20% more than ours in summer - I suffered badly in December when I went to QLD !!  But until someone comes over here and lives thru several weeks over 38 and the nights rarely below 30 - I shall continue to wonder about vegemite in the fridge !!!!!!!!  hehehehehe.

Holes in SAOs? Only those little pinpricks  - and they're so crumbly (and I'm so incompetent) that if I tried to make worms with them I'd crush them up!

I admit I haven't had SAOs for a long time, as I've switched almost exclusively to Vita-Weat.

Next shopping trip I'll get some SAOs and ahve another go :D

That's what happens with peanut butter over here, and probably explains why I don't use it much.  The thing is if I don't refrigerate it then it will spoil from the humidity.

I await the results !!  Me personally - I have never had a problem making SAO vegemite worms !!  Are you mixing the marg and vegemite into a nice thin paste ??  Maybe the consistency isnt right. Bet ya never knew it was this technical !!!!!!!

Oh - on the fridge issue.  I checked with my friend who is doing a fascinating (?? her own words ??) thesis on cultures and moulds - and she assures me that with all the "stuff" (she wouldnt elaborate and if she did we would probably never eat it again) in vegemite - it wouldnt grow a mould if it was kept in 80% humidity for 20 years.  She said there was a reason why its ingredients (ie salt) were used to cure meat for the 6 month voyages between UK and Aust in 1700's !!!!!  After that I switched her off !!!!  I prefer not to know !!  Its like how I can pretend that pate was never liver - its denial !!!!!

I went shopping last night and got some "Original" SAOs from Coles.

Geez I had trouble making worms! First of all, I don't normally dilute my Vegemite nowadays so I had trouble getting the right marg/vege mix without making it taste disgusting. Then I had to make it SOOOO thick to get it squeezable, Then a few SAOs died in the cause, being snapped in two during the extrusion process. (Note: I was swabbing the "flat" sides, not the "bumpy" sides of the SAOs.)

I finally managed to get a few scrawny specimens out, but really, it wasn't worth the bother   :P

Oh well good for an experiment  :D

I was pretty certain it stood for Salvation Army Officer Indy,
but then I found this......

" The origin of the name remains a mystery, although plenty of myths abound.  One is that it was the name of a ship that used to call in at Newcastle port, and its captain was a friend of the Arnott family. Another is that it was the name of a sailing boat that was seen on Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, where William Arnott had a house. Or it could be the initials for Salvation Army Officer, as William Arnott’s* son, Arthur, joined the Salvos. Another is that it is based on the initials of Samuel Arnott, William’s son. "

*Founder of Arnott's Biscuits Australia.

Hope that (sorta) helps ! :-/

SAO's...from what I've read, these sound remarkably like Cream Crackers (but I've never spread 'Marmite' or whatever on these...)

They've been around for years, too...so much so that they eventually became part of the slang, i.e., 'Cream Crackered = knackered (tired)'...

There also used to be a jolly party game years ago...whether you could consume a whole packet of the things in record time without the aid of liquid...it's not easy!

If they're a dry cracker why are they called cream crackers?  Do you have Jatz crackers in the UK?  In my part of the world when a male gets whacked in that part of their anatomy that really hurts they say they got whacked in the "Jatz crackers".

A jolly party game here is to eat a Weet-Bix or Vita Brit without the aid of liquid .... almost impossible!

Back to the SAO thing, I also believed SAO stood for Salvation Army Officer.

http://smh.com.au/text/articles/2003/09/28/1064687673707.htm

"Dick takes the biscuit

Looks like Dick Smith is really scraping the bottom of the cookie barrel with his latest campaign to promote his biscuit range by hiring a very distant relative of William Arnott - the founder of arch rival Arnott's biscuits. In a new TV ad, a man named Greg Arnott, whom Spike was yesterday told is the "great great grandson of the brother to William Arnott, founder of the biscuit empire, or something like that", endorses the Dick Smith range over the Arnott's brand. However, when Spike called to verify what connection Greg Arnott had to Arnott's biscuits, the details were scratchy at best. Back in 1997 the extended Arnott family voted to accept a $220 million offer to sell their stake of the business to the US giant Campbell Soup. There was never any mention of a Greg Arnott in the coverage of the deal. It appears not much distinguishes Dick Smith's "Mr Arnott" from anyone else who happens to share the Arnott surname. Spike did a quick check of the White Pages yesterday and found in NSW alone there are more than 100 listings. "
