Subject: Longest songs

Written By: Billy_Florio on 09/05/03 at 06:03 p.m.

can anybody think of the longests songs ever (and if you can do you know the times for them?)

some I thought of:

Marquee Moon-Television : 10 minutes and lik 10 seconds
I'd do anything for love (but I wont do that)_Meat Loaf : another song over ten minutes
Echos-Pink FLoyd : its literally like 23 minutes, but theres a shorter version thats 9 and an even shorter radio cut
Alices Resterant/ Masacree-Arlo Guthrie: Half and hour
Karn Evil #9-ELP : the album cut is like over 30 minutes, but the radio cut is like 3
thick as a brick-Jethro Tull: its like 45 minutes, but the radio cut is shorter

hmm..Ok, what else ya got?

I know there are a bunch from Parliement-Funkadelic and Floyd and some others, plus some live stuff from the Allmans.....

there's a song by Mogwai...can't remember the name....that's 20-something minutes long...

I think one of the longest songs that ever made it into our charts as an 'uncut' version was Grand Funk Railroad's "Inside Looking Out" (1971) - I don't have the exact time of it, but I'm quite sure it's within the 8-9 minute category...apparently, the single (for that's what it was) was cut at 33rpm so the entire song could be squeezed on...!

Meatloaf's "Anything For Love" was whittled down to 6 minutes or thereabouts for radio play...I think, therefore, (unless it's been beaten by something recent) that The Beatles' "Hey Jude" still holds the record for the most long-winded #1 record (at 7'11'')

Mr Roboto is pretty long, but it's good that it's long, because it's such a rad song.

The Devil Glitch-Future Fossil Music, 68 minutes and 53 seconds long.

These aren't the longest, but they are lengthy...

"Someone Saved My Life Tonight"--Elton John
"Baker Street"--Gerry Rafferty
"Bohemian Rhapsody"--Queen

These aren't that long, five or six minutes, but they seem pretty long.

I consider any song over five minutes long.

At the end of Limp Bizkit's chocolate starfish and the hotdog flavored water, I think it's part of the outro, but that guy laughs for like ten minutes at the end of that CD.

Just off the top of my head:

Can't You Hear Me Knocking - Stones
Going Home - Stones

(both have long drawn out instrumental endings)

Thunderbuck Ram - Mott the Hoople  (ditto as above)

In a Gadda Da Vida - Iron Butterfly (of course!)

Incident on 57th Street - Springsteen (even longer tied to 'Rosalita,' which it technically is...)
New York City Serenade (from the same album)

Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John (also both hooked together)

I am sure I will think of more later...

Oh! Billy mentioned Funkadelic:

"Maggot Brain" - the quintessinal zone-out-at-3-in-the morning song...

Another one:

Low Spark of High Heeled Boys - Traffic

Any opera song  ;)
But in all seriousness, "Schism" by Tool, a handful of Metallica songs, The Beatles' "Hey Jude", And Led Zep's "In My Time of Dying" or marathon-like.

Note: So is Edgar Winter Group's "Frankenstein", but at least it's an instrumental. ;D

American Pie is (a considerably pitiful) 8:32. The live version is somewhere in the region of 7:11.

A track by Miles Davis with two words, the last of which is Brew, is... 26:40, I think. Fantastic.

Conversely, there is an Arthur Lee track called "You Can Save Up To 50 Per Cent But You're Still A Long Way From Home". The track lasts 17 seconds.

There are several Neil Young songs which, live in concert, will stretch to 30 minutes or more, and one that stretches to about 52.

And the shortest track ever to enter the UK charts (I believe) was three fifths of a second long. I'm screwed if I remember the title though.

Bohemian Rhapsody... I THINK... without the aid of remembrance, is 5:52. Having looked it up, it seems the version on my tape is 5:56. So close.

The shortest Beatles track (save for most of the early takes I've heard), is most probably Maggie Mae at :40.

A few more mentionables...

Kraftwerk's 'Autobahn' originally swallowed up an entire side of an LP - some 29 minutes...

Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells' (if you take it as a whole) swallowed up both sides - some 53 minutes...

The Orb's 'Blue Room' clocked in just short of 40 minutes...

All, of course, sliced to within 4 minutes for radio play...

 18.    The Message  performed by Flash, Grandmaster & The Furious Five - 3:11 ???

This would be because of the long sax lead in the middle, which I think adds a lot to the song.  Being a big fan of this tune, I would have been happy if it ran even longer!  :o ;D

Possibly a radio edit...the label, Sugarhill, used to have this nasty habit of issuing about 3 radio edits for each single...

The original 7-inch version (yes, there was one issued here!) lasts 5'59"...I would imagine the 12-inch (which I don't have) adds at least another two minutes to that time...

What, no mention for 2112, Rush's 20-minute masterpiece?

When I went to see Marillion on their "Misplaced Childhood" tour, they went through what seemed to be a whole concert without playing anything from the new album... then Fish said they were going to play the last song of the evening - and they did the whole album start to finish.  Evidently Fish wrote it as one story, but it's been set as different tracks on the album for convenience.

Has anyone heard King Bing by Babybird ?  I think it lasts about 9 minutes.  It's quite bizarre..... but I love it.

What about Arlo Guthrie's  "Alice's Restaurant"
or   "Rapper's Delight"?

I don't know if they do this anymore, but a local classic rock station used to play "Alice's Restaurant" many, many times every Thanksgiving Day.  Eek!

"Light My Fire" by The Doors seems really long with the musical interlude (not always included when played on the radio) but I don't know how long it really is; thus, I don't know if it constitutes as a true "long song."  But it seems long!

"Warehouse" by the Dave Matthews Band is pretty long; too long for my taste anyway.  :P
