Subject: Beds
After 4 years of sleeping on a water bed....try getting out of one of those when you're 9 months pregnant...i gave hubby hours of amusement...trying to get out of it i mean...anyway back on track, last week we bought a normal queen sized bed with a firm mattress...now my problem is i can't sleep...hubby can't sleep....even my son, when he staggers through at 3 in the morning, can't sleep!
We miss the swishing swashing sound when we roll over.
So my question is...how can we replicate it? (without us all wetting the bed that is)
How have others got used to their new beds, and how bloody long does it take? We're all incredibly knackered!
Subject: Re: Beds
When I moved in with my honey (5 years ago), I gave up my waterbed. I still miss it. The thing is, the mattress we have really sucks and I have had major bad problems since. I have been trying to convince him to get a new one. He finally agreed that we will in a couple of months-and I plan on holding him to it. I know that I can't convince him of getting a waterbed-he hated it when he spent the night at my old place. Oh well. I just hope that once we get a good mattress, I won't have a much back pain.

Ok here's what you do:
1 - Don't let him read this thread
2 - Wait til it's his birthday then you say you've got a huge surprise for him
3 - Go buy the waterbed...how can he possibly complain when it's a gift from you to him?
Subject: Re: Beds
The waterbed is not healthy. The best thing to sleep on is as hard a surface as you can take. The reason is, if you sleep on a waterbed or some very soft matress, you will bend your spine out of shape. My guess is that you are just not used to having a matress be so firm. You will get used to it in a few weeks.

The only good thing about a waterbed is the "motion in the ocean". ;) ;D
Subject: Re: Beds
I don't know how true this is but recently a bed salesman was telling me that it depends on how heavy you are as to which mattress you should buy. They sort of come in recommended weight ranges, 9-12 stone, 13-15 stone and then 15+. You need to choose the firmness that matches your weight range the best.
The bed we currently have (which we bought before finding this out) is a bit too firm for us. We bought a mattress topper from IKEA and this softer layer has improved things.

As someone who has had back problems and therefore done alot of research, you are incorrect about sleeping on too hard a surface.Ideally it shouldn't be too soft or too hard both can do damage to your back and spine. The thing to do is to go to the bed shop with a book or magazine and try out matresses by laying on them for at least 20 mins and not just on your back either, lay on your side etc too.Don't be embarassed and don't be hassled by the sales assistant it you that's spending the money after all! It's amazing how something that feels dead comfortable at first is very uncomfortable 20 minutes later !! My fiance and I spent two hours at the bed shop when we were choosing our bed and it has been utter bliss to sleep in right from day one,we even miss it when we stay elsewhere on less comfortable beds !!
Cat, keep on about that new matress!Otherwise maybe you could go and visit the osteopath or chiropracter and present your sweetie with the bills !!

Lol I weigh 6 and a half stone karen, maybe I should go for a kids ;) I'll look out for a mattress topper i think...and an electric blanket, it's awful getting into a cold bed!
Gis it was bad enough getting him to stay in the shop long enough to choose between the two beds i liked let alone lie on one for 20 minutes, i suppose if i'd brought him coffee and toast he may have...

Thats a shame My fiance and I had an absolute scream trying out matresses but I sure that had a lot to do with his mood at the time, usually he has to be dragged kicking and screaming into shops........unless they sell Star Wars toys ::)

Lol see if you're still saying the same after 19 years together..although we do still hold hands when we shop...that's more to do with my lousy sense of direction though i think

I do go to a chiropractor every 6 weeks and get a massage about once a month or so. Before he agreed to getting a new mattrass, I dropped "subtle" hints. There are many ads for mattrasses that come in the paper. I would just place them on his side of the table (where he reads the paper) instead of putting them in the recycling pile. But, he usually just puts them in the recycling pile without realizing why I put it there. But, since he has agreed, I don't have to do that anymore.

Stones? Like the ones in my driveway? How much does a stone weigh? Excuse my ignorance. ???

I'm convinced that it was the water bed that screwed up her back in the first place. The thing was so soft I, not being pregnant, had trouble getting out of it.

It's the U.K's weight system for humans a stone is 14 pounds ! So I weigh 10 stone 2 ie: 142 pounds and I haven't got a clue what that is in kilos !?!
Subject: Re: Beds
A stone is just a tad over 6.3 kilos. I figured since boris is originally British she'd know what I was on about.
Subject: Re: Beds
Waterbed....ahhhh no soft side reduced motion crap either! :P
Ive had the same California King full float bed since I cant remember when.I have changed the matress a few times though.
I am not comfortable at all on a regular mattress.Good for ya?? HA! I wake up stiff and sore its horrid.
Once we stayed at a place that had one of those matresses that "contours" itself with your body. But the matress itself is firm. That wasnt too bad.If I had to get used to that maybe I could if it was heated too ;D

I've been sleeping on the same mattress for so many years now. :P ;D

I have a deep hatred of waterbeds since an underfilled mattress ruined an early sexual eperiance for me. The details can't be discussed in this forum but lets just say I wasn't sure where it was hidden in the first place. ;)
My wife and I now have a wonderful king size mattress and box spring. Not to soft not to hard and it has the "pillow top".
That thing is heavenly. The key thing is, spend the money on something that is right, it's worth it.

Subject: Re: Beds
Why not contact the shop and see if they will swap the mattress? You might try and argue they should have mentioned that, given your small size, it might be a bit too firm. Worth a try anyway.
Subject: Re: Beds
I'm going to try and find one of those bed toppers, we have Ikea over here (amazingly!) so i'll go there next weekend
Nothing to do with beds but I got all excited yesterday cos I found a Boots (the chemist) own brand in a shop!
We also bought Tesco's mushy peas from the supermarket once just cos it was Tesco's...can't stand peas lol
Subject: Re: Beds
I wasn't sure quite how wide spread Ikea was. Our house is full of Ikea stuff. In fact we are going there soon to buy my daughter a bed. We reckon James is old enough to inherit her toddler bed now.
Just a thought on that topic. Ikea bed sizes are a bit funny so their mattress topper might not fit your bed. I'm not sure what size a queen size bed is, in all honesty, so they may fit. I just know that their double bed size is a bit too big for our double bed.

When I had my waterbed, I had an "egg crate" foam pad that was great. When I sold the waterbed, that went with it. I did get a new one but it was not as thick as the original one I had. Also, HE didn't want one so it is only on my side of the bed. Of course, I have a tendacy of sleeping in the middle of the bed to cuddle. So, that kind of defeats the purpose.

I can't stand anyone cuddling me while I sleep...feel too claustrophobic!
Tell HIM no more cuddles til you get a full sized "egg crate"

That's 64.5 kilos Gis, in Canada that's what we're forced to use ;)
Subject: Re: Beds
Yeah, if you care, we now have a new mattres, Last night I slept like a long, as usual - I can sleep almost anywhere, except an under-filled water bed, like sleeping in a sponge. She says she didn't sleep all that well because she had "a lot on her mind". Well, we'll see. It is comfortable though.
Subject: Re: Beds
We've had water beds (always warm on a cold Canadian night),
IKEA foam (great for her back) and now a Richard Simmons bowling ball matress which is just great, you can move without disturbing the other person and the thinck top with firm springs is perfect.
Subject: Re: Beds
So that's why they call it a Simmons bed! I didn't know that! I thought it was just called Simmons.

I haven't been waking up with back pain all week. ;D I think this new mattress is doing the trick.
