Subject: The meaning of "Don"
I'm sure that many, if not most folks know this, but Cat pointed out that folks sometimes refer to me as "Don" as if it was a name (short for Donald?), which is ok with me, although Carlos, or just Charlie would be more appropriate. Actually its a title meaning sir, indicating the rank of hidalgo or knight. I'm not a knight, but the term has been reduced to meaning more like mister, or master of the household. My maternal grandfather WAS a hidalgo though, in the traditional sense.
Family history is sooo cool.
As an aside, a distant cousin on my father's side contacted me and sent me my liniage. My paternal family settled in the S. German town of Stetten in the early 1500s, having come out of the Black Forest (wearing horned helmets and carrying battle axes), and one of my ansectors was killed in Spain during the Napolianic wars - by Spanish farmers (stealing eggs - or daughters ???).

So when I say, "Pleased to meet you, sir", I'm right, without even knowing it. Cool. ;D
Subject: Re: The meaning of "Don"
I have always thought that a "Don" was the head of a Mafia organization. I guess that film "The Godfather" corrupted that word. ;D

I kind of assumed you meant the Spanish nobility sort of "Don"... in fact, I don't think I'd even thought of it as a shortened "Donald" till you pointed it out above.
So what's it in full, then? Doesn't it have to be something like "Don Carlos y Alvarez Gabriel Garcia Marquez de Cordoba"?
;-)

I'm neither the king of Spain, nor the Columbian Nobel Poet Lauriate, just the humble decendant of a humble hidalgo, alas :'( ;D
In full, in the Spanish tradition, it would be Dr. Carlos Jorje P... Roman y Melendez. Not very impressive, is it?
;) ;) ;D
Cute post, thanks!

"don" could also mean to dress fancily.

That would make "don" a verb, to put on clothing. I do that too ;) Although almost never "fancy" ;D
