Subject: CD Players

Written By: Junior on 06/07/03 at 09:07 p.m.

Well, I haven't seemed to have any luck with CD players lately...and I couldn't find the site for my most recent one to complain about it ( ::) ;D) ...so I figure I can get some recommendations for which CD players are best, considering this is a music-related board for the most part. ;)

I had a CD player that lasted me 4 or 5 years before "dying" on me (I replaced batteries a couple times, tried playing even the more older, 'simpler', CDs, but it wouldn't turn on at all.)

I got a new one, a Panasonic for a gift this past Christmas (2002). It was okay, but the sound quality wasn't the greatest, and it didn't play my crappy offbrand CD-Rs...I had a Verbatrim and some other brand, I'm not sure, but it was a name brand that played, but "K Hypermedia" didn't . I have a new brand of CDs (I just burnt my first CD with this kind), AT&T, who are associated with Verbatrim (am I spelling that right?), but the 20-something other CDs I made on the crappy brand end up going to waste.

I bought myself a new one, brand = Audiophase, which I made sure had CD-R/RW capabilities, and also had mp3-CD cabalities, and it was only around $40. I was impressed with the mp3-CD part, but suspicious. It played my CDs fine. The sound quality wasn't as good on the burnt CDs, just some extra static you could here. However, in the middle of listening to the CD, it will cut off and won't come back on for at least 30 minutes or so, I'm not sure, I'm usually too frustrated to mess with it. I even took it back and exchanged it for a new one, only to have the same problem.

So, you can post here to warn other boardies of craptastic CD players, or maybe recommend a good, inexpensive CD player to moi :D ;D.

Note: I've noticed Aiwa and Phillips players that are pretty inexpensive...anyone know about these brands?

My sister bought one when she was probably 15 or 16... she's almost twenty now... it works just fine, and she gave it to me a few months ago, so it's almost like brand-new to me.  So, it's lasted at least four years, and it's pretty good... I'll have to ask her tomorrow how much it cost her, I think it was eighty bucks or so... and the brand is a "KOSS" or so it says (I had to look over at the CD player just now to see what kind it was)...

I got one from Wal-Mart for Christmas a couple Christmases ago and the tape player broke after a few months (the "play" button practically fell off  ::))... it's in a closet right now, I'll tell you the brand tomorrow, because it wasn't the best quality, I think there were other things wrong with it too... so basicaly, don't get a thirty-forty dollar CD player from Wal-Mart, maybe it was Target...

Hope this helped.

ETA: I just reread my post, it looked like I was kinda rambling, hopefully you can understand what I was saying... I think its time for bed now.

If you stick with the name brands , Aiwa, (it suprised me about the Panasonic, my 7 year old tape player still works) Sony. Usually the big name brands have a better return policy as well. I have a clunky old Denon personal CD player from '92 that still works even on burned CDs but not multi-session ones. When I buy them, I purchase them from Circuit City, Frys, Best Buy and other stereo retailers, if they do not have the same model or like your audiophase the model has a design flaw, there are more manufactures models that compare with the same features. I took one walkman back to Walmart and they didnt have anymore like it. I waited 2 weeks for a replacement and none came, so I went to customer service and got my money back. Stay away from brands like Apex, Emerson, Yorx, they may be cheaper but you pay for it in the end. I learned my lesson the hard way on car stereo recievers and amps.... too many junk manufactures willing to put out a product that tries to compete with the same features as a higher price brand but ends up only lasting a few months. Yes, there are exceptions to the rule, Emerson can put out one good model every blue moon and Aiwa can make a bad one.

The one I was talking about that I got for Christmas a couple years ago was a Memorex.  Like I said it was kinda cheap and things didn't work very well on it (it wouldn't even play some types of burnt CDs).  Oh and my parents have a Magnavox, that is a very nice CD player, probably close to 100 bucks but I think it's worth it.

are you talking about portable cd players, or just sationary ones?

if you mean stationary ones, sony has treated me well...although the left speaker doesn't work anymore.  (that was also my fault for accidently hitting it into a wall... ::))  it's old though, and it doesn't like playing some songs on cds i've burnt...like number fifteen.  why fifteen?  it won't play song number fifteen, and the ones before and after it work.

as for portable ones, sony = BAD.  i'm suprised you said that panasonic was giving you poor sound quality on burnt cds, mine gives me great sound quality.  as for cheeper players, i've noticed that they break a lot more easily...the panasonic has lasted through the abuse of me bringing it on the bus every day.

Sony isn't just bad when it comes to portable CD players - they're EVIL! :o ;D

I have a Panasonic SL-SX388...it played about 5 of my burnt CDs (4 Memorexs my friend burnt for me and a Verbatim that came with my computer)...it doesn't play any of my "K Hypermedia" brand, but these CDs are cheaply made (no matter the price, don't buy!)

I made a CD with the new AT&T brand, which I found out was manufactured by Verbatim, so they should work well...and only 99 cents!  :D ...I tried playing the CD on my alarm clock/radio/CD player....other than #13, 15, and 17, it played well...not as bad as the other crapolicious CDs (k hypermedia), which didn't play any tracks from #3 to the end... >:(

Aiwa seems to be my brand of choice. They were the best priced between the former, Panasonic, and Phillips...Panasonic was around the $50+ range...Phillips and Aiwa were both between $30 and $50, but Aiwa seems to be the best according to various people...

Well, I found a stationary CD player that plays my burnt CDs fine....Magnavox...

I'm going back to Best Buy to exchange the crappy CD player for an Aiwa one, if they have one...

I have an Aiwa portable one that is about 8-9 years old and it still works great.  I also have a Sharp boombox that I bought over 10 years ago that works well.  I only have 1 burnt CD and it plays on both of them.  As far as one that is part of a "rack system", hubby's brand of choice is Technics (owned by Panasonic).  Hope that helps :)

My new batch of blank CDs (AT&T brand...which is manufactured by Verbatim , I think)...works fine on my Panasonic SL-SX388, as well as my Magnavox stationary. So, I'll just do the 20 CDs that are on the cheap KHyper Media CDs over on the new AT&T cds, and buy another 50 pack of blank CDs (they were only 99 cents when I got them).

Much easier to spend 99 cents than 50 bucks.

:D

ETA: I'll keep Aiwa in mind for the future though. ;D ::) :P
