Subject: What do you guys think about these comedians?
As it often is with comedians and comedic actors, you either like them or you can't stand them, how does everyone feel about the following?
Richard Pryor
George Carlin
John Cleese
Robin Williams
Steve Martin
Jim Carrey
Bill Hicks
Eddie Murphy
Mike Myers
Bill Murray
Subject: Re: What do you guys think about these comedians?
Richard Pryor
Groundbreaking. Very profane though.
George Carlin
His vocabulary and semantic wit always amuses me but sometimes he takes things a little too far...which I guess is what gives him his appeal.
John Cleese
British comedians are a different breed. I'm not sure how to describe it, but they have their own ways of making you laugh, so I'd say he was good at his art, which explains why he's still around and Monty Python is such a classic.
Robin Williams
Absolute maniac. And versatile too.
Steve Martin
He seems to have a quiet dignity despite his reputation as a goofball.
Jim Carrey
After the initial shock of "Ace Ventura" and "Dumb and Dumber" his stuff got old. He took it down a notch with his last couple movies though.
Bill Hicks
Whodis?
Eddie Murphy
I loved Buckwheat and Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood ;D And the Ghetto Gumby skit was the shiznit.
Mike Myers
So much potty humor, and yet so quotable.
Bill Murray
According to my friend, he is the reason Caddyshack was such a revered comedy.
Subject: Re: What do you guys think about these comedians?
as a comedy writer and comedian, I must have opinions on all of these people:
Richard Pryor:
and excellent comedian. He always makes me laugh. He also is one of the most important black comedians there ever was, and was much much more influencial than some of the recent unfunny ones are, or any of the def comedy garbage....when he hosted SNL it was classic...when he did movies with Gene Wilder it was classic.,...but where has he been for like the last 8 years?
George Carlin:
More or less my stand up comedy idol..I learned everything about stand up from him and Gary SHanding and Jerry Seinfeld.....His books are also hillarious, and his material never gets old ..(he may be a legend, but he does have his comediac duds...."why is there no blue food?'..give me a break)
John Cleese: As Rice said, British comedy is its own catorgory...and unually unfunny (at least to me)...but the comedy of the Monty Python group, and John Cleese's solo stuff is great...John Cleese isnt really a stand up comedian though..he's a comedic actor...he doesnt really belong in this group since him and the others of MP (Michael Palin, Eric Idle, Terry Gilim..etc) are in a class of their own
Robin Williams: genius, pure genius.....not that great of an actor (especially serrious stuff..has anyone seen "insomnia"?...og man, that movie was sooo bad...Pacino couldnt even save it....and "one hour photo"..OMG....), anyway, he does alright acting in comedies...he kind of mixes phyisical comedy with the profane stuff...and it works great...he is hillarious....
Steve Martin: Steve Martin is in another catorgory by himself....as a comedy writer he is great, as a comedian he is funny, usually.....as a banjo player..well, um, lets not get into that....hes a funny guy, but he is better in an acting environment than in a standup environment....dont get me wrong, he is funny standup wise, but theres a reason why hes hosted SNL so many times...hes just better there....and somehow...an arrow through the head and say "Excuseeeeee me" isnt funny to me
Jim Carrey: Physical comedy.....hes funny..he tryed out for SNL in the early 80s..he didnt make it, so instead he went to In living color.....he didnt belong there..he was much funnyier than the other people in that show (sorry RIce)...Hes good in COMEDY movies....not during garbage like the Majestic....I just saw "Bruce almighty"...it was good..I laughed, it was a funny movie....its nothing like the bad stuff like the Cable guy, or someother stuff...frankly, "Ace Ventura" is great. "Dumb and dumber" was hillarious (and Ill explain why, almost every joke in that movie was ad libed by Jim Carrey...none of any of those funny jokes in there was in the script.....now theyre making the sequal..it WONT be funny..trust me)...THe mask was NOT FUNNY...Liar liar was hillarious (and true, well, not the magic part, but the part that we need to lie)...um...what else was he in? Me myself and Irene..eh....im forgetting something major, I know it...anyway, "Earth grils are easy" is still his best lol
Bill Hicks:name sounds familliar...cant place him though
Eddie Murphy: what era? Eddie Murphy before and dring SNL....great. He was hillarious....Eddie for a period of about 7 years after...great...I guess his last GREAT movie was "Distingusihed gentlemen"///Eddie after that..awful......Nutty professor was garbage....Bowfinger was pretty good, but thats about it....
Mike Myers: as a comedy writer, he has gotten good...he was funny on SNL, but after he started making movies not based on SNL sketches, they just werent THAT great "So I marryed an Ax murderer"?...not funny....the three "Austin Powers" movies are still his funnyist non-SNL related stuff (waynes world 1&2 were great)
Bill Murray: almost made it ont he original cast of SNL but was replaced by Dan Akryoid....Bill Murray is funny...he is, he also though, belongs in a acting environment...he isnt a standup
Subject: Re: What do you guys think about these comedians?
Quoting:
Jim Carrey
After the initial shock of "Ace Ventura" and "Dumb and Dumber" his stuff got old. He took it down a notch with his last couple movies though.
End Quote
What I meant was that his "acting" in the last couple movies like "Bruce Almighty" wasn't as wacked out as in the "Mask" which, in retrospect, really sucked.
Subject: Re: What do you guys think about these comedians?
Richard Pryor - Funny, but told alot of the same jokes
George Carlin - Pure genius! My favorite of all time.
John Cleese - eh, not THAT funny
Robin Williams - psychotic and funny all wrapped into one
Steve Martin - eh, he's OK
Jim Carrey - very funny actor, his stand-up isn't all that
Bill Hicks - He too was a genius!
Eddie Murphy - "Delirious" & "Raw" were classic!
Mike Myers - another one of my faves
Bill Murray - one word....."Stripes" 8)
Subject: Re: What do you guys think about these comedians?
Jim Carrey is my favorite comedian. His Ace Ventura movies were so funny. ;D
Howard
Subject: Re: What do you guys think about these comedians?
I'd have to say that Mike Myers is my favorite comedian. He's funny and he's Canadian! ;)
Subject: Re: What do you guys think about these comedians?
On a sheer comedy level, The Mask really isn't THAT funny. But, cinematically, it's a much better film.
Oh, and all those who are wondering who Bill Hicks is, I think it goes something like this: Imagine Denis Leary. Now imagine that Denis ripped off his pacing, cigarette-smoking shtick from a better, cooler comedian, one that died of cancer while Denis went on to MTV fame. That's Bill Hicks.
Subject: Re: What do you guys think about these comedians?
Richard Pryor Pretty funny
George Carlin I don't care much for him
John Cleese Very funny ;D
Robin Williams Funny at times :)
Steve Martin He's okay
Jim Carrey I can't stand this guy...I think it has something to do with all the facial contortions he does
Bill Hicks I'm not familiar with him :-/
Eddie Murphy Very funny ;D
Mike Myers He's okay
Bill Murray My all-time favorite comedian!!! 8) ;D
Subject: Re: What do you guys think about these comedians?
I'll make an honorable mention:
Lenny Bruce
Richard Pryor - Excellent
Pryor’s life away from the spotlight has continued to be as newsmaking as his on-stage doings, indeed often providing fodder for his act. He has five ex-wives, four children, including actress Rain Pryor, has suffered two heart attacks and undergone quadruple bypass surgery. In 1980 he made headlines when he was rushed to the Sherman Oaks Hospital and Burn Center with mostly third-degree burns over 50 percent of his body. In 1986 Pryor was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease of the central nervous system.
Despite his frailty and occasional struggle for balance, he returned to live performing in 1992 at the Comedy Store in West Hollywood. He has since appeared at venues around the country, still making jokes about himself and his afflictions and decisively demonstrating that he is a survivor—and living proof that laughter is, indeed, the best medicine.
http://www.kennedy-center.org/programs/specialevents/marktwain/pryor_bio.html
George Carlin - Good
John Cleese - Alright
Robin Williams - Excellent, though he always seems to be *on* when he's not doing a film. Like on Jay Leno, he hardly ever just sits there to talk during the interview. The man always perspires, for crying out loud. It's exhausting for me to watch after a while.
Steve Martin - I like him. He's very good and the only reason I watched some of the last Academy Awards show. He had me laughing my head off there for a bit. His movie "The Jerk" is a comedy classic.
Jim Carrey - I liked him in the show "In Livin' Color" and my absolute favorite thing he does is "impressions", especially when he does the "Kirk" and "Scotty" from classic Star Trek.
Bill Hicks - ?
Eddie Murphy - He was very funny in the 80's. IMO, he's become unfunny ever since. He seems to be keeping busy these days with many efforts that are all too similar in comedic routine and I find it very hard to distinguish his performances from movie to movie. I have found this to be the case in his animated efforts as well. In Disney's "Mulan", he played the part of a very small dragon with an attitude. I found it funny! Years later, in the movie "Shrek", he sounded exactly the same, except he was now a mule with an attitude. I kept thinking, "the very small dragon". His movies in the last 10 years leave a lot to be desired. Poor taste in some of his material hinders his work considerably. Just think of "The Klumps". ::)
Mike Myers - "Wayne's World" was great, but I feel it was great because of the team-up with Dana Carvey. I think MM is mildly funny on his own. I also think the Austin Powers movies are a tad overrated.
Bill Murray - An oldie but goodie. He's always funny no matter how much time goes by.

Yes Yes! Thats who he is! Hes not THAT great....in fact Dennis Leary's not THAT great...he just gets annoying at times because everything seems to make him mad...he just is too angry.....he can be funny(the both of them), but neither were really THAT funny.........but Dennis Leary is a better actor and has a hillarious song by the name of "_____hole" (figure it out)
Subject: Re: What do you guys think about these comedians?
Richard Pryor: Liked some of his double acts with Gene Wilder
George Carlin: I like his dryness
John Cleese: Hilarious man - cant watch more than three eps of Faulty Towers in a sitting cos my sides ache. And all my Python videos are stretched from being overwatched.
Robin Williams: Quite simply the funniest man on the planet save one - mentioned at the bottom. I love that nothing is a script to him.
Steve Martin: Billiant in All Of Me, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Roxanne, but in stand up and interviews I find him too scripted.
Jim Carrey: utterly revolting - cannot stand looking at him or listening to him.
Bill Hicks: Dont know of him.
Eddie Murphy: I loved Coming To America but I find him hard to take in everything else. I have watched videos of his 80's stand up and I find it too "in your face" - like he had finally learned the "f" word and wanted to use it as often as possible.
Mike Myers: Took me a long time to appreciate him as I thought he was "just another yank comedian" but then I discovered he was a canadian raised on british comedy by a liverpudlien father and that made me go out and watch his movies.
Bill Murray: Stripes, Caddyshack, Tootsie - I love his sardonic self depreciating lazy style.
My honorable mention:
Billy Connolly - the absolute greatest in the world - equal first with Robin Williams and it helps that they are best friends. I would love to have a BBQ with both as I reckon it would be the most hilarious night of my life. I love that neither need a script - they just run with whatever happened to them that day and that can use up an entire routine or interview. I also love that both have been able to crossover from comedic films to dramatic films so well.
Another one not mentioned - Bill Cosby - I had only ever seen him in stuff like Cosby Show - then one year my friend loaned me a tape of his stand up and a routine about wearing bifocals for the first time had me ROTFLMAO and I still laugh when I hear someone mention bifocals !!

some of my honorable mentions:
John Beluschi (not a commedian, but a hell of a comedic actor)
Gary Shandling
Jerry Seinfeld
Graucho Marx
Woody Allen
Adam Ferrara
Pat Cooper
Dom Ireara
Abbott and Costello
Gilda Radner
Dennis Miller

Subject: Re: What do you guys think about these comedians?
Billy F - you are probably in the US - Billy Connolly really only became known there when he moved to LA for a while to be in Head of the Class etc. The rest of the world has been laughing along merrily with him since the early 70's. We have seen him do stand up basically every year since then as well as performances on TV - he also does the most hilarious travel series.
Rather than judge him on just the small content US TV would have shown (especially a badly written US sitcom !!!!!) - try seeing if your local video shop has one of his "greatest hits" videos - I guarantee you will be in for a big laugh. And dont worry if you have to rewind 15 times to understand his accent - everyone does !!!!!!!!!!
Criz - thanks for making me giggle ;D hehehehe luv any quotes from ole Basil.
Subject: Re: What do you guys think about these comedians?
I'll duplicate Rice's comments, with a couple of additions:
John Cleese - at his best scripted, but capable of writing brilliant screenplays, for himself as well as others
Robin Williams - way, way better when ad-libbing than following a script. Tied for the best ad-libber in the world, ever with Billy Connolly
Bill Hicks - very funny - I'd agree that in a way he's a role model for Denis Leary (though I love a lot of his stuff, too)
Some Bill Hicks quotes:
A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. Do you think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a ******* cross? It's kind of like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant on."
They lie about marijuana. Tell you pot-smoking makes you unmotivated. Lie. When you're high, you can do everything you normally do, just as well, you just realise, it's not worth the ******* effort. There is a difference.
and my favourite:
I love the Pope, I love seeing him in his Pope-Mobile, his three feet of bullet proof plexi-glass. That's faith in action folks! You know he's got God on his side.
Phil
PS He's right on the last one - does anyone remember how long the previous pope, John-Paul I, lasted?

hehehe no its not bad to be from the USA !!! I just know that as I hadnt heard of a couple of the comedians iniatially listed that people in the US may not be as aware of Billy as say anyone who lives in UK and Aus.
Movie - hmmm he has been appearing in movies since 1975 - if you are thinking in recent years it may be the delightfully sweet period piece Her Majesty Mrs Brown. A couple of years ago he was in Muppets Treasure Island. He had a cute few minutes in The Imposters. He made a gorgeous movie is Aus called The Man Who Sued God but I am not sure if that had a US release. I cant wait to see his new one - I think its still being filmed - its meant to be a p#sstake of all the Merchant Ivory films - its called Remains of the Piano !!!!!
