Subject: Rice Cube loses his...
...and now that I've got your attention... ;)
Some of you probably know that I basically hate my job, and the lab is losing some funding so I might be laid off anyway. I just came back from vacation and I've got a new perspective on things, so here are my choices:
A) Teacher
I believe that I can be an excellent teacher. I've taught or aided in the teaching of subjects ranging from Mandarin Chinese to college level biochemistry, so I'm very versatile. I also like the rewards that come from knowing that I've enlightened young minds. The pay is pretty crappy though and teachers are, unfortunately, underrated and underappreciated. But at least I'd get three months off ;D
B) Lawyer
I think I can score well on the LSAT (law school admissions test for American law schools, anyway) and I think my personality is vibrant and assertive enough to make this work. I don't know much about the law but I think my science background and rudimentary sense of logic might suit me to do patent law or environmental law. I promise to be one of the good lawyers if I go through with this :)
C) Veterinarian
I love animals. Gotta take a bunch of animal physiology and comparative anatomy courses to satisfy the prerequisites, but this can be done. I think I would have a lot of fun :)
D) Go back to graduate school
Bah. I hate research. This is like the backup backup :P
E) Run for Congress on a grassroots campaign
Seeing as I turn 25 in 2004, I'd be just in time to be eligible for running for a House seat :D No way in hell I'd win, but it'd be fun to make the big guns sweat (at least for that 0.1% of the vote). Plus, since the Bay Area is so densely populated, my congressional district is very small so I'd be able to cruise through it in a day and talk to almost all the registered voters.
oh yeah!
F) Full time parody artist
But first I need to learn to play the accordian ;D
Just throwing this out for y'all ;) I seriously have no idea what I'm going to do with my life, but I'm sure everybody feels that way every now and then. Oh, and I found out I'm getting laid off, woohoo! :P :D ;D Time to update the resume! Two months...
Thanks for at least reading this...not like you had a choice though, considering the thread title that was ::) :P ;D ;)

Well, must say, you DEFINITELY got MY attention ;)
Anyway...I vote for A
I think we need more "fun" teachers. All of my science teachers were sooooooooo boring. Which sucked, because I loved science classes. Especially labs. I think you could come up with some really interesting ways to teach the basics, and come up with more exciting ways to teach the more complicated stuff.

Rice
I don't know what sort of job you do at the moment so it's kind of hard to advise. If you're scientifically minded what about working for a patents office? I know of a couple of people who do this after getting Physics degrees. They both really enjoy the work. Of course in the States the set-up may be different.
Subject: Re: Rice Cube loses his...
Dirty trick with that title, Rice. ;D
Anyways....
It's all up to what you want to do. Just make sure its something you want to be stuck with for the rest of your life. :)

Teacher!
Subject: Re: Rice Cube loses his...
Hi Rice!
I've never believed in staying with a job that you're not happy with. I'm glad that you're exploring other possibilities for work.
I would vote for either a teacher or a veterinarian. I'm sure both would be very rewarding...either helping young people learn or helping sick animals get well. The ultimate decision is yours, of course. You won't really know if it's the perfect job for you until you try it. At any rate, good luck with whatever you decide to do. :)
Subject: Re: Rice Cube loses his...
This is a question that only YOU can answer. You need to look deep into yourself and decide what YOU would like to do. Exploring your options is good. Asking for advice from other people is fine too but just remember it is YOUR decision. I basically live by Joseph Campbell's words, "Follow your bliss." Good luck with this new life you are about to embark on and let us know what you decide.

I would suggest for you to find out if there is really going to be a layoff and/or if you will be the odd man out. If you are going to choose another vocation, take as much education as necessary for your chosen. As my liberal buddy would say, "Don't go from a frying pan to a fire." 8)

Go Rice!! I hope you'll be happy with whatever you choose.
And yes, that subject title was a seriously dirty trick.
Subject: Re: Rice Cube loses his...
I'm guessing the thread title was a LOT more provocative before I got here...Hairspray had to do a lot of editing.... :o :o :o ::) ::) ::)
I'd dust your resume off and update it anyway. I can't hurt to have it ready, and even if you end up not getting laid off you can use it to look for a job you like a lot better.
As for which job you should take...
Take the first one that offers you a paycheck!!
I've been looking for work for so long as an accountant/accounting assistant...and not finding it... that I am actually putting in applications to be a cashier at Wal-Mart or a burger flipper at McBurger Things.
When you have a paycheck to keep up with your bills and expenses, you then have the luxury of hunting for a job that you really like.
And what job you REALLY LIKE is a question only you, yourself, can answer. ;)
Subject: Re: Rice Cube loses his...
I can only add a piece of experience to this...
...for heaven's sake, try and stay away from night work...
I done it for three years - nearly killed me!
Just an opinion, of course - whatever you end up doing Rice, hope it's enjoyable...
All the best!
Subject: Re: Rice Cube loses his...
I think you would make a great teacher. Like Cheer said, we need more fun teachers. They make a better impression on kinds and in turn the kids learn more.
Subject: Re: Rice Cube loses his...
Rice, my input is to stick to the private sector. But you'd be a great teacher too. :)

Anway...being younger than you...and having not completed college yet...Id say take the professional parody writer career...and then having completed college, you have something to fall back on...so go with it!

Actually, the wee four-month period between graduating and finding a job was spent being a full time parody artist already...but I'm hoping this time won't take four months ;)

Teacher! Kids/teens would love you. Vet would be great too but that's a lot more school.
