Subject: Lurkers

Written By: CatwomanofV on 05/12/03 at 08:52 p.m.

Can someone please answer me why we have been getting a lot of lurkers lately? I know we have our usual lurkers (and yes, we know who they are) but I have noticed that there has seem to be more than the usual share. I also noticed that these lurkers seem to be reponding to other lurkers rather than members. Somehow I have the feeling that it is one person who is basically answering him/herself. Ok, had to say it.

It seems to be that one person here has been doing more than his fair share of lurking...and really getting on everyones nerves.  He lurks and posts stupid sh!t in all the threads...whether they are serious threads or not....he makes sure he hits EVERY game in the PBG...and will even respond to himself just to have something else to say.  I know who you are...and so do alot of people here.  All this lurking showed up when you did...and GUESS WHAT??  We are not gonna let you do this to our board anymore...we are taking it back from you!!!!!  If you continue to bother us with your non-stop lurker posting...we are gonna jam your pm box with so much junk you wont be able to get through it all in one day.  And if you have your e-mail addey in your profile...then poor, poor you!!

This is your one and only chance...and then we are gonna be on you like stink on...well I think you get the picture

Do yourself some good....learn messageboard etiquette...or go find a board that finds your posts amusing

Yes, there are more "lurkers" than usual.

Sometimes it happens when there is a running joke on a particular thread, and the so-called lurkers are regulars using funny names, but lately there has been more than usual.

And like others, I think I know who the annoying lurker is, too.

Hopfully this fad will lose it's popularity soon, and everything will be back to normal.

While the lurkers have made the board a less pleasant place for the rest of us, there's also documented evidence that this type of lurking is subtly damaging to the lurkers psychological wellbeing as well.  Cyber anonomity dispenses with the only inhibition some people have.  It seems an innocent enough game .... but the idea of abandoning self boundaries is never a good one it seems.

That's my lecture for the day.  :P

Yes, I agree....the lurking has gotten out of control.  I am sure all of you have figured out my "lurker" names by now (it's pretty obvious) ::). But I don't do it to be rude or annoying to anyone, it's more of an inside joke between Tarzan Boy & myself.  I apologize if it has made anyone feel uncomfortable.

However, I do know that whoever is posting under all these celebrity names is lame.  It's just becoming way too much.  It's not even funny or entertaining at all!  And as far as the "Admirer's" thread, (with the exception of the stupid ones), I don't have a problem with the "lurking" admirer's.  Although, it would be nice to see them come out of their shells.  Trust me, if TB & I could do it, anyone can!  HAHA  ;D

I agree with you on that. I understand that some people are afraid to come out of the shell which is kind of understandable. But, I am referring to the "stupid" ones (as you called it). It just seems that someone or someones really don't "get it" and think they are being cute. I am surprised they didn't respond to this thread-YET!

Kinda makes you wonder what the message board would be like if Chucky set the message base to registered posters only. I wonder how much more civil we would be to each other?  ::)  ???

I, like CatV and SS, am kinda tired about wondering who said what about whom, trying to guess what one said and who is the lurker vs. registered. I bet if Chucky was some way able to do an IP trace would find that 90% or higher of all "guest accounts" are registered users. :P

8) 8) 8)An IP trace sounds like a good idea, but it doesn't work if someone does most of their posting from a public place, like a workplace, school,or cafe. Also,a married couple or roommates might have the same address but ,well,be different entities. There are also probably some people who don't know how to register--as witnessed by the regulars who needed to "start all over again".A lot of what the lurkers say is pretty goofy, and it kind of makes people think your thread is silly, but I just try to laugh along with them as long it's not nasty.Cheers! :o

Lurker isn't really the right term.. guest posters, anonymous posters, are closer. A true lurker is someone who never creates and account and just reads messages without responding.

I'd say there has been some innocent anonymous posting, and some by people just visiting who want to ask a question, but for the most part, it's gotten abused lately, so I've had to end it. I dislike forums with registration requests, but without them, trolls run wild, and any meaningful discussion is drowned out.

The only problem I have with lurkers is the ones that are writing threatening or irrelevant posts, which accounts for almost all of the lurkers. Chucky's new sign-up policy resulting from excessive lurking has inconvenience me on the thread in which I can't reply to because the box won't show up when I press reply, including answering quizzes and PBG. I agree with Chuck 100% in requiring members to sign in. That way, we know who the real Internet fans are.

Once again, I started a thread that didn't go the way I had hoped. I just wanted to get this off my chest and I didn't expect Chucky to change the way things are here. That was never my intent. I feel a bit bad and want to apoligize-especially to Pop and TB because I know how much they love to tease each other as "guest" "lurkers" or whatever word you want to use.

Well ya know the old saying, one bad egg spoils the whole bunch (or I think that is the saying).

I think not allowing the lurkers, trolls or whatever you call them was a good idea.  (Now before you stone me) I am gonna miss some of the regular 'lurkers' like Zella mentioned in the announcements thread...but the others are NOT gonna be missed.  The past few weeks have gotten horrible, and most of the time I am only able to look and not post since my home computer is still messed up.  Of course that means if I am not able to borrow my dads laptop til I get mine fixed, I will be out of luck posting anything.  But in the long run I think we will all be better off.  And who knows...once people get the idea that they can't come here and try to ruin it all for us, Chucky might lift the restriction.

Of course, this is only my 2 cents in the matter, but I really think stopping all the crazy posting will stop fights and hurt feelings.  We have had to deal with changes before, and I bet with time we can come to accept this change too

I've gotta agree with SS on this too.

We've had lurking trolls in the past, but never quite this bad.

It (meaning the lurking trolls) has spoiled it for all of us...especially those whopost from work or the public library.

I didn't like the new messageboard setup at first, but now I can't imagine it any other way...

I'm sure these changes will be just as easy to adjust to.

Many of the lurker posts are quite funny, IMO.  I never thought that the lurkers would take-over the boards completely, though.  Too bad that feature is disabled, now.

Yeah, I suppose it's better in the long run, but is it really necessary? I mean, does one person answering his own posts really constitute a problem? I've seen others post as lurkers and speak their minds and p!ss a few people off but those have been few and far between...plus, it's usually just a few posts and then it's over and done with. If it's really bad Hairspray or Chucky can just lock the thread.

I didn't find the "Admirer's" thread all that annoying. It was kinda fun trying to figure out who was who...and they eventually let us know anyway.

Personally, I think we're over-reacting...however it will stop the b!tching so it does have its merits...

My 2 cents...for what it's worth.  ;D

While it is true that ones that answer or revive our own topic are not the problem Jonman, its the ones who are saying stuff that detracts from others views or like a few on the admirers section who just posted to add to make the thread grow, not saying anything worthwhile at all. The b!tching was only on one thread however the "guest posing" was on MANY threads. As with many priviledges that have been revoked, it just takes few who constantly ticks the many off.  :-/

Thanks, TV...that's exactly what I meant.  I've had issues in the past myself with no phone service, no power or whatever...and had to go to the library.

I know I can log in from the library, but like some others I don't like to do anything that requires a password or other sensitive info in a public place....some of those whiz kids frighten me with what they can do.

I have to make one point here, this board is the most civil, respectful, courteous, caring, and a hundred other postive attributes I could point out even whent it's within its most heated threads and most goofy.  I have played around in other boards in the past and lately and spoken with fellow members here about boards they frequent as well.  None that I know or have heard of can compare with the qualities of this board. :)
On this note however:
I have to support Chucky on this decision, troll posting can be fun, but if that option is deleted than this board can only become a more positive place. :)  Plus it may put an end to the occasional spam posting and those maddening "I have an Eighties Party to attened, history paper to write, food dish to make blah, blah, blah...." where if they did a little searching they would find the answers and you never see them again when you do post input. >:(
