I am AB+ and my sign?  I am sure if you read my posts & from my avatar history, you would be able to figure it out on your own  ;)

Here's a list of the types and the percentage of people who have each type:

O+  38 percent of population
A+  34 percent of population
B+  9 percent of population
O-  7 percent of population
A-  6 percent of population
AB+  3 percent of population
B-  2 percent of population
AB-  1 percent of population

I'm O-, which is called the universal donor because all blood types can accept my blood (however, unfair as it may seem, I can only have 0-).  AB+ is the universal receiver and can accept any blood.  Being O- also means you get called by the Red Cross a lot because they really want your blood.

Okay, so I probably spend too much time donating blood... but it's for a good cause...

'Tis a very good cause, but I can't stand to have the needle inside my arm for so long *shudder*...the most I've ever donated was 50 cc's to test neutrophil function.  My neutrophils are the BOMB ;D

I am also AB+ ... so if only 3% of the population is AB+ (they told me at the blood donor clinics I'm a rare case) then it's a little weird that so many of us here are AB+! That's kinda cool don't ya think?

Yeah, that is wicked!  I also have been told by my docs that I have a rare blood type and that I should donate as much as I can.  I guess they try to get people with the less common types to give blood since the majority of people that give blood are...well the majority of blood types?  (I have no idea if that even made sense) ::)

It made perfect sense to me!! LOL...I get regular phone calls from the blood donor clinic advising me when I can give again. I have to wait until December this year because of a tattoo I had done...

With AB+ we are rare indeed, but the good thing with it is that we can receive blood from anyone!

I am a Libra but I don't see how this has any bearing on my blood type...lol ;)

I am A+ and my husband is A+.  His mother is AB- which we only found out when she had a blood transfusion after an operation.

As well as giving blood regularly I am also registered with the British Bone Marrow Donor registry.  So far I have only given a blood sample for testing but could, in theory, be asked to donate my bone marrow.

I thought negative was not a good thing to mix?  Wasn't there always a concern about mixing neg & pos when making  a baby, that it was deadly for the baby?  (ie., 1 marriage prospect tested neg and it was denied?)  Is this something that's proven false or am I misunderstanding the whole concept?   ???

Yes, there is a concern.  But, it's only if the mother is negative, I think.  My mom is O- & my dad is AB+,so she had to get what is called a Rhogam (sp) shot.  Guess it hurts like hell.  Now, a friend of mine is B+ and her hubby is A-, and she didn't need to get it.  If I remember Biology 101 correctly, a person with + blood can get -, but not the other way around.

Making babies is different than blood transfusions.  For donating blood, O- is the universal donor and anyone can receive it in a transfusion.  So someone who is AB+ could safely receive AB+ blood or O-, and someone who is B- could safely receive B- and O-.  However if someone with O- recieved blood that wasn't O- it would cause blood clots to form which would cause heart attacks, embolisms and strokes.  Blood types must be matched very carefully, well, except for AB+, the universal receiver.  One of the reasons the Red Cross is always desperate for O- (you even get a special blood deposit bag when you're O-) is that in an emegency situation, they don't have to run any tests on the injured person to find out what blood type they are, they can automatically give them O-, but only 7% of the population has O-

You're thinking of the RH factor which gives the blood types the + and the -  and it can be deadly when making a baby:

the Rh factor is important for pregnant women. If an Rh+ man and an Rh- woman have a child, the child can be Rh+ or Rh-, depending upon the genotype of the father. If the baby is Rh+, this can cause problems. While in the womb, some blood cells from the baby will cross the placenta into the mother's blood stream. The mother will make antibodies to the Rh+ cells. If the woman becomes pregnant again and if the baby is Rh+, the mother's anti-Rh antibodies will cross into the baby's blood and destroy its red blood cells, which can kill the baby. If diagnosed early, it is possible to save a baby under these circumstances by replacing the baby's blood with transfusions that are free of the Rh antibodies. Also, if this situation is known, it is possible to treat a Rh- woman with anti-Rh antibodies (RhoGam) immediately after childbirth to inactivate the baby's Rh+ cells and prevent the mother from forming anti-Rh antibodies (desensitize her).

Thank you so much MI for posting that. That was very informative!

I have a question though:
Why is it that some states require blood tests before getting a marriage license? I got married in Las Vegas, and in Nevada they didn't require anything but a valid i.d. (I am surprised they even asked for that ::))

I'm just simple little A+.  And STILL the Red Cross wants to get their hands on my blood, sending me letters, etc.  According to them, when I had Chicken Pox as a young lad, I had it BAD.  And my body built up LOTS of antibodoes to it, apparently more than normal.  They want my blood for that reason, they said.

I sleep with one eye open.  I know one of these nights I'll see them crawling through my bedroom window, bloodbags and IV tubes in hand...

Are you ready for the answer?  The blood test was originally mandated to test for venereal diseases and for rubella.  I think a big problem of syphilis was the main cause of the law.

Subject: Re: What blood type are you?

Written By: XenaKat13 on 05/06/03 at 10:35 a.m.

I'm O-something.

I'm guessing it's O+ since the blood banks aren't chasing me down.

As for the pre-marital blood tests, I too, think is has something to do with preventing the spread of sexually-transmitted diseases, once callled "venereal diseases".

When I got married, the clinic also offered me an optional test for Rubella (German Measles).  When I asked why it was optional, and not required, I was told that if I had an active infection at the time I got pregnant, the baby could have birth defects.

Since my immunizations against Rubella were up-to-date, and the test cost extra money, I didn't bother getting the "optional" test.

When my mom was pregnant, they gave her the RhoGam shots while pregnant, then again right after childbirth.  Then again, that was 20(+) years ago.  She also had x-rays (insteadof ultrasound) to check all of us.

:D :D :D :DIt's also possible for your kids to have some type of type O,depending on what genes you and your husband inherited. For example,if you and your husband each inherited an A gene from one parent, and an O gene from the other parent,it's possible your kids could have inherited two O genes, making them type O.For type O you need 2 because o is recessive.Cheers!
