Subject: It's Derby Festival Time!

Written By: cs on 04/04/03 at 09:40 a.m.

Anyone coming to Louisville, KY for any of the Derby festivities?

Thunder Over Louisville is not only the official opening ceremonies for the two fun-filled weeks of the Kentucky Derby Festival, it is also the nation's largest annual fireworks show.  It's next Saturday (April 12).

Let me know if you'll be in town.  You Indiana folks are close enough to come!

The Derby (Horserace) isthe 1st Saturday in May.

Thunder Over Louisville is the nation's largest fireworks show and kick's off all of the festivities surrounding The Derby. More than 51,333 shells were used in the 2002 show.
That compares to 7,200 used at the first Thunder Over Louisville along the Ohio River.

In 2001, the Derby Festival conducted an economic impact study that determined Thunder Over Louisville generated more than *$31 million for the local economy*. The total economic impact for the entire 70 events of the Derby Festival is estimated at $93 million for both Greater Louisville and Southern Indiana.

There's a steamboat race, hot air balloon race, balloon glow, Chow Wagon, concerts, The Oaks, Fillies' Ball, Pegasus parade, hole-in-one contest, mini marathon, run for the rose,
volleyball classic, golf tourneys,... (to name a few of the events leading up to the Derby, whew!)

Check out the link in my original post for a complete list and schedule.

No sorry, I will be at Music Midtown in Atlanta that weekend.  Its a 3 day concert with over 120 bands on a dozen stages.  Though that Festival does sound like fun.
