Subject: You know you're from a small town if...

Written By: FussBudgetVanPelt on 02/25/03 at 06:35 a.m.

You can name everyone you graduated with.

You know what 4-H is.

You ever went to parties at a pasture, barn, or in the middle of a dirt road.

You used to drag "main."

You schedule parties around the schedule of different police officers, since you know which ones would bust you and which ones wouldn't (same goes with the game warden)

You ever went cow-tipping.

You could never buy cigarettes because all the store clerks knew how old you were (and if you were old enough they'd tell your parents anyhow).

When you did find someone old enough and brave enough to buy cigarettes, you still had to go out to the country and drive on back roads to smoke them.

It was cool to date someone from the neighboring town.

You had senior skip day.

The whole school went to the same party after graduation.

You don't give directions by street names or directions by references (turn by Nelson's house, go two blocks past Anderson's, and it's four houses left of the track field).

You can't help but date a friend's ex-girlfriend (or boyfriend).

Your car stays filthy because of the dirt roads, and you will never own a dark vehicle for this reason.

The town next to you is considered "trashy" or "snooty", but is actually just like your town.

You refer to anyone with a house newer than 1980 as the "rich people."

Anyone you want can be found at either the Dairy Queen or the feed store.

You see at least one friend a week driving a tractor through town.

Football coaches suggest that you haul hay for the summer to get stronger.

Directions are given using "the" stop light as a reference.

Weekend excitement involves a trip to a Wal-Mart.

You decide to walk somewhere for exercise and 5 people pull over and ask if you need a ride.

Your teachers call you by your older siblings names.

You can charge at all the local stores.

The closest McDonald's is 45 miles away.

It is normal to see an old man riding through town on a riding lawnmower.

You laugh your head off reading this because you know they're all true and forward it to everyone who lives in your town!

This perfectly describes my hometown.  Now, the population is over 5000, but when I was growing up, it was about 3000.  However, we didn't even have a dairy queen or feed store.  The closest thing we had was Tastee Treet (not even a Tastee Freeze) which was smaller than a 2 car garage.  It was a big deal when WalMart came to town. (1992)  My senior class had a total of 66 people in it.  We used to party at "Second Road", the second road out of town.  We didn't have to worry about police officers, there were only 3.  And, we only had 1 stop light.  Now, there are 3.  (one is technically at the city limits, but we still claim it ;))

Actually, now that I think of it, the one I live in now is worse.  We have nothing except a liquor store, 2 take out pizza place, 2 gas stations, and a smorgasboard.  No fast food, no grocery store, nothing.

Everything here applies to where I live right now. Kids still drag main street, there is nothing else to do.  Like all the locals will tell you, we have two kinds of music here: country and western.  ::)

Yep, this just about covers it for my hometown.  Except for the stoplight.  We didn't have one then and they still don't today.  And stop signs are just a suggestion.  :)
We also didn't have a Dairy Queen or even a Tastee Treet.  We had to drive 45 miles to the next town for that McDonald's and to go to TG&Y (no Wal-Mart then) :D
But everyone knows everyone and they all look out for each other and that's what's good about living in a small town.

And, unfortunately, everyone knows your business in a small town.  :-/ Usually before you do. Weird factoid about my town: We don't have a mall but we have two Chinese restaurants and about 50 churches....we really like Chinese food here. And, apparently religion. ;)

lmao, that happens to my friends all the time.  i don't have that problem (i'm the oldest ;D ), but i do get asked all the time, "oh, are you related to so-and-so?"  i have a really common last name, so naturally, all the teachers think that if someone else has my last name that we must be related in some way.  i find this endlessly amusing, since none of my relatives live in pennsylvania.  my one vice principal is actually a friend of my friend's sister.  :o  it seems to me that once families move here, they move from house to house, but never actually leave the town... ;)

the only thing is that my town isn't that small anymore...at least three new housing developments have gone up in the past year and two of them are down the street from me!  in my grade alone, there's at least 1000 students; we're the largest class so far to ever enter the high school.  the middle school actually ran out of lockers for every student.  that's pretty funny/sad, considering the middle school was only built four years ago!

Well I was born in a small town
And I live in a small town
Prob'ly die in a small town
Oh, those small communities

All my friends are so small town
My parents live in the same small town
My job is so small town
Provides little opportunity

Educated in a small town
Taught the fear of Jesus in a small town
Used to daydream in that small town
Another boring romantic that's me

But I've seen it all in a small town
Had myself a ball in a small town
Married an L.A. doll and brought her to this small town
Now she's small town just like me

No I cannot forget where it is that I come from
I cannot forget the people who love me
Yeah, I can be myself here in this small town
And people let me be just what I want to be

Got nothing against a big town
Still hayseed enough to say
Look who's in the big town
But my bed is in a small town
Oh, and that's good enough for me

Well I was born in a small town
And I can breath in a small town
Gonna die in this small town
And that's prob'ly where they'll bury me

That basically discribes my town-population just over 2,000. I think the cow population is larger than the human population. However, we do have a McDonald's and I even know the owner. I can't say that I know EVERYONE in town because I have been only living here for about 5 years or so but I am learning. Of course, there are some people who I really DON'T want to know (like my next door neighbors but that is a different story).

That's Fletcher for ya!  Population: 1,000 (including cats and dogs)  :D   haha

But hey, i'd rather know everyone than meeting someone 10 years down the road and be like, "You went to school with me? what?"

AND I am looking forward to senior skip day AND the after-graduation party.

But these are great Fuss!  :D  I'm amazed at how your aggie references match those of Oklahoma perfectly.  ;D

Well these small towns sound hugh compared to the first place I worked at as a Station Master. It was called Corfield, was 80 kilometres from the nearest town, and contained a railway station , pub, post office and a school which contained 6 kids, and about 7 houses. I spent 6 months there and I wouldn't swap my time there for anything. Small towns are much friendlier than cities.

Shopping cart racing in Wal-Mart aisles is considered a sport.

I've watched my town almost double in ten years, now we have over 100,000 people, but living in Kansas, we still get jokes like this all the tie...
