Subject: Have you had a brush with Greatness?

Written By: shazzaah on 01/21/03 at 12:10 a.m.

A post from the 80's inspired this thread. Have you had a brush with a celebrity, politician, or otherwise noteworthy person? Tell us about it!

My brush of greatness was meeting a professional wrestler. The Gentleman Chris Adams. This would have been 1985 or
86....a bunch of us were at VTR Video in Denton Tx waiting
in line to rent movies, when we spotted a guy in lime green
pants waiting ahead of us. Being the smartaleck creeps that we were at the time, we had to razz him about it. Well, imagine our shock when the guy turns and it is the Gentleman. He was kind enough to forgive us and sign autographs for us... ;D Sadly, he was killed in 2001.

Let's see...when I was at college I brushed against some future NBA stars...

At Berkeley, while filming "Patch Adams" I met Robin Williams.  He also filmed part of "Mrs. Doubtfire" in my hometown.

At Duke, sometimes you'd see cast members from "Dawson's Creek" there...

And I had the good fortune to meet Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg before he passed away.  Seaborg helped discover the transuranic elements and has element 106 named for him.

My mother used to work in theatre so I met many-Davy Jones, William Shatner, Betty Grable, Pat O'Brian, Jack Gilford, Joan Fontaine, I'm sure there are others but can't think of them at the moment. However, when I was teen, I did summer stock. One actor who was there was named James Handy. Since then, I have seen him in many movies/t.v. shows including Taps, K9, The Vertict, The West Wing, Quantum Leap and more. I can actually say that I knew him when...  Don't know if he would remember me, though. Maybe he does because at one point I got to sit on his lap-but that was another story.

I have never actually met a famous person, except for a couple of our people in the Senate. But I do have some uh..."connections"

My dad used to live pretty close to one of the people from Lynyrd Skynyrd (I don't think I spelled that right)

And my dad told me that one time he saw Ray Charles at the airport. "However," my dad continued, "I don't think he saw me."   8)    hahaha

Well, in late 84 I lived in North Hollywood and worked at a restaurant called Victoria Station.  It was situated right next to the Universal Studios.
We occasionally would have people over to meet their agents, give interviews, whatever so I got to meet a few people.
I've met Jason and Justine Bateman and I met Andy Gibb once in a furniture store of all places but my favorite has to be....
ol' Blue Eyes himself.  He was in the restaurant between lunch and dinner (we were technically closed) to eat before giving a show at Universal Studios Ampitheater.  That was cool!!  And he was very nice.

And we got to hang out with you! ;D

I met Jack Nickolson and Anjelica Houston in their kitchen.
Richard Harris after a performance of "Camelot". :D
Jeff Lynne came to my Mom's memorial service.
And I met the guy who played Rubin Kincade on "The Partridge Family".
Oh, Frankie Avalon.

I met Jenny McCarthy at a basketball game at UIC where her sister played.

I got to meet Rick Sutcliff when I was 10 at a Cubs game. He won the Cy Young award in 1984. I think he was with Jody Davis, and they both stopped to talk to me when I recoginzed them and said "hello". I remember they asked me if I was a Cubs fan then he patted me on the head. I have been a Cubs fan ever since.

I also met Brian Cox, who was a linebacker for the Bears and Jets. He knew a friend of mine from college, so he came to our table to have a few drinks with us. He was very cool.

In college I was president of our Campus Activities Board and we hired George Carlin to do a show.  I got to meet him because I was head of security for the show.  I've also met the lead singer of Agnostic Front and went to a New Year's Eve party at the house of one of members of Danzig, and met him (I think he was the Bass player, but I'm not sure).  Carlin wasn't very nice (he's grouchy in real life, not funny at all) and the other too I was not very sober, so I don't remember much except that I told the Agnostic Front guy that he sounded like a magic 8 ball.

Other greatness?  The head engineer of our robotics team, Dave Lavery, is in charge of NASA's next robots to Mars mission which is happening this spring, and that's pretty impressive.  He is about one of the most fascinating creatures I've ever met.  The hero-worship he gets from the kids is just adorable!

Jack Nicholson played a brilliant practical joke on me in London when he was making Batman.  He use to drink at the pub I ran and for a couple of weeks he had fake policemen and police dogs walking up the canal when ever I was on my way to work - they would always tell me they were looking for a body.  Finally - on the final day - I go out behind the pub to throw rubbish in the skip when I see a "blood" covered arm that then starts wriggling across the rubbish towards me.  I turn to see Jack and the entire pub standing there laughing at me.  Then the other culprits - his special effects mates from the movie - stood up from behind a bridge with their remote control !!!

Hmmmm who else have I brushed with...............

I have cooked and shared meals with:
The Pointer Sisters, Diana Ross, Starship and Sly Stallone.

I have been at the same 1988 party as (and chatted to):
Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, Patrick Swayze.

Ive met "Darth Vader" David Prouse when he came to Perth for ankle surgery.

I once sat next to the man who plays the "good" russian at the end of several Roger Moore James Bond movies on a flight between Boston and London.

I got as far as the door of AHA's hotel room before changing my mind about the invitation.

I drank with Rik Mayall and Ben Elton on their first Aussie tour back in the 80's.

I had drinks with Chris Isaak and his band Silvertone in four different states last month.

Aussie mentions that will mean nothing to the overseas mob !!

I have met my fav Aussie actor whose website I run:
www.JohnWaters.info

I once won dinner with James Blundell in a barrel drawer.

I spent the mid to late 80's partying with Xmen & Psuedo.

I use to be the social club organisor for the West Coast Eagles from 92 to 95.

I've been involved in a "sword" fight with Jon English during Pirates of Penzance.

I went shopping with "Jim Carver" from The Bill.

Ive sat next to Barry Humphries and Jeremy Sims on flights across Aus.

At the recent Chris Isaak concerts I met the first Popstars judges !!!  bwhahahahahaha

gawd I will have to go thru my old diaries - I have definately missed some !!

I almost forgot...I went to high school with "Green Day" vocalist Billy Joe Armstrong.  Actually, he was a freshman while I was a junior.  I knew him, I knew Green Day's vocalists name but never put 2 & 2 together until recently.  His older brother, Dave, was in my class.
Just for the record, I never cared for their music...

Back when I had the money to do so, I went to a number of science fiction/comic book conventions.  I met British actor Tom Baker, best known here as "Dr. Who", and from the original Star Trek, George Takei, and James Doohan.

I heard talks by, but never got to meet, Nichelle Nichols, and Robert Enlgund.

When my then-employer sent me to work at a comics convention I met STAN LEE, the Creator of Spider-Man.

Though few of you know who she is, I belong to another messageboard with artist/writer Donna Barr.

When I worked at a 24-hour supermarket, who came through my checkout line one day but Ric Ocasek of the cars and his wife, supermodel Paulina Porsikova (I don't think I spelled that right.)  Lemme tell you, without her makeup, I didn't see what the big whoop was.

Peter Wolf  (of J. Geils Band) also came into the store once, but went through another line.

I've quite a few:
My son and daughter played in the same basketball league as Dennis Miller's and Rob Lowe's kids; met Alex Rocco, Chuck Norris, William Daniels and Eric Stoltz at the hospital I used to work at; ran into Michael Anthony of Van Halen at a AM/PM; seen Christopher Cross at a pizza place; met Alan Gratzer (fromer drummer for REO Speedwagon) at a high school football game; and does anyone remember the band Gene Loves Jezabel? - I was in a band that opened for them at a small club - that was really cool.

Oh, no argument there!  He's scary looking.  And really, really tall.

Paulina wasn't *that* bad looking, I think she's ok. It's just that a lot of people make big deals over supermodels without realizing that most of the excitement is over makeup, fancy clothes and airbrushed photos.

Shazzah, maybe you should change the name of this thread to "brush with celeberty" instead of greatness......whaddya think? I've only seen a couple of these folks that I would think of greatness when they are mentioned. I don't know how "great" you'd consider them but I backed up (warm up band) for Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, Molly Hatchet (singer Danny Joe Brown thought his s##t didn't stink), and The Kentucky Headhunters (great bunch of guys) to name a few. Nick Nolte was at a Christmas party we played for in Charleston, WV. Partied with Toy and Tommy Caldwell, of Marshall Tucker fame, after a gig in Spartanburg SC. (RIP Tommy)
