Subject: Snow

Written By: Gis on 01/09/03 at 05:12 a.m.

Initially I was going to leave an excited post to say we had had our first proper snowfall yesterday but how's this for irony or something.
We had our first snow yesterday as I was on my way to the shops. It was beautiful, big fluffy flakes, everywhere sparkly white and crunching under foot so I was smillng and feeling at one with the world until I got home and found out my poor Dad had totaled his car on black ice from the self same weather.Thankfully he and Mum were ok, only shaken. It was also his first accident in thirty five years of driving.I feel like the lyrics to an Alanis Morrisette song !

Hey Gis,

Looks like we escaped the worst of it in Chester and the surrounding area. Still brass monkey's though.

Glad to hear your parents were ok!

I rather embarassed myself this morning by deciding to walk the mile or so to work, and treating a load of schoolkids to a one man ice skating show, much to their amusement.

That'll teach me!!!!

I'm trying so hard not to laugh. But I can picture you in my mind. One of those horrible moments in Olympic figure skating, "Ohhh that had to hurt". ;D
Gis, glad your parents are ok.

Please feel free to laugh TripsMom. It was a sight to behold. My shuffling along, trying not to slip, just made things ten times worse, and was interspersed with a fine display of triple salko's and other impressive moves in an 'ice dance stylee'

I remember doing that one night on the way back to my sisters house.I had boots on that had no grip on the bottom and must have skidded and slid about enough to make my journey twice as long as hers, as you said much to the amusement of those around me!!

Someone once told me that a good idea was to put a pair of thick socks over your shoes when walking on snow/ice. Taking this suggestion on board, I did so, and the socks were in tatters within minutes, and still two miles to go!!

My marks were very high that day!!!

Perhaps next time you should try to skate to work for real ;)  Ice skates are great, sometimes I wish a glacier would cover Northern CA so I can ice skate all over the place :D

Those things that look like tennis rackets that go on the shoes of Alaskans (What are they called? ? ?) would do the job well.  :)

I'm glad that your parents are ok Gis :)

I couldn't believe it when I woke up and saw the blanket of white outside. Naturally it was only about 2cm deep here in Solihull - but it was still something! I'm not a big snow fan myself - bring on the Summer sun!

What is 'snow'?

For that matter, what is 'rain'?

We had a lot of Snow during the past couple of weeks in New
York.close to 10 inches fell and a week and a half later,The
Snow melted and it snowed again,BUT lightly. Then the mild
temps came along and simply washed it away.We are supposed to get another snowstorm soon. What a January this has turned out to be. ::)

howard :)

Minnesota's been so warm and snow-free that they're making contingency plans for some of the events of the St. Paul Winter Carnival, and, farther north, they're moving the date of the John Beargrease sled race back about three weeks.  We have no snow cover on the ground right now.

Gis I'm glad to hear your parents are ok.

I was riding with a cousin a few years ago when the car he was driving skidded on the ice.  We didn't hit anything, but the car behind us came literally within an inch of crashing into my side of the car when it, too skidded.  A very scary experience.

It has snowed lightly here every single morning since January 1st.  In the afternoon the sun comes out, melting some of it, then when the sun goes down it re-freezes making it very hard to walk (or drive).

The local news station has admitted on air that they have started a pool over how many days we will go with getting snow or rain in the mornings. ::)

Ever notice that when you slip on the ice, you fling your arms out and flap them about to try to keep your balance?  That looks almost as funny to bystanders as actually falling on your bottom. ;D ;D

Still waiting for Spring, A few good snowfalls with clear roads is good enough for me. Then Spring... Pennsylvania's hill country and Snow just don't mix well for Driving. I have a Plaque in my Cube that reads: Let it snow.... Some place else!

I say Amen to that.  I need one of those plaques.  So far we have had 60 inches of snow here this year.  We just got clobbered with 2 feet last week and it has snowed just about every night since then.  It is only January  :'(  . Getting to the point where I don't know what I'll do if I have to clean off my car...again.
