Subject: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
in the thread cultural naming differences there was a message about the outback steakhouse. Before i went to america on holdiays (vacation) one of my friends over there asked me how often i eat bloomin onions. My reply was whats a bloomin onion? As soon as i was in america my friend took me to the outback to see how much was actually australian. Let me just say the pics around the walls are all australian and thats it! I must also add though the food was really good. I did try a bloomin onion and it was ok and i had "ribs on the barbie". They were really good. We also had this brown bread (not sure of the name of it) but it was good but nothing like our damper. Some thing else - american soft drink - soda pop - coke, what ever you want to call it, its not as fizzy as australian. That took some getting used to it tastes flat

I'll admit that Outback compromised on a lot of the Australian, but anytime they jettison the baked potato with their home baked croutons, it's all a g'day. ;D
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
OK - somebody explain to me what a bloomin onion is exactly - please? ???

I'll venture to guess it is a big onion which is cut to look like a blooming flower with a special kitchen tool, dipped in batter and then deepfried. When served, it looks like a Bloomin' onion! :D ;D 8)
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
The onion is OK, but I could live a year on that brown bread!! It's nice and warm and you put a little butter on a slice....who needs steak and potatoes!!! lol
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
the ribs were the best ones i have ever had, you didn't need a knife to cut them they just came apart. I don't know what the desserts were like i ate too much of the brown bread and ribs so i couldn't fit in any dessert. When we were asking the waitress about bloomin onions they said they soak them in water first and that maked them expand then cut them with the machine that makes them look like they do and then coat them and then deep fry them.
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
i don't know what the brown bread is but it was very nice, especially when it was really hot with butter all over it. It was square in shape so i don't think they were trying to make it look like damper. I didn't see it in any other restaurant over there either
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
I just recently made friends with a guy in my band who's from Australia and he was basically saying the same thing about the Outback Steakhouse. He said that it didn't seem very authentic at all to him and he said that they put far too many spices on everything. I've never eaten there, I'm a vegetarian and the name of the restraunt itself has put me off going there. I'm sured I'd find something to eat there if I did go, though.
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
It's probably just me, but whenever I see the phrase "Bloomin' Onions", I get the urge to cry out "What *about* the friggin' onions?!" ;)
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
I actually don't much care for steak altogether. The brown bread is great and I LOVE ME A BLOOMIN' ONION, MATE! ;)

How to have an authentic Aussie BBQ
What you will need:
Steak. Australian grass/grain fed beef.
Sausages. None of the European-style bratwursts, Australian beef or pork sausages only.
Potato salad.
Coleslaw. Lashings of it.
Onions.
A tossed salad comprising lettuce, onions, tomatos. Maybe some cheese.
Bread and butter.
Beer. Use only genuine Aussie beer such as Victoria Bitter, Tooheys New, Castlemaine XXXX, Coopers or Emu Bitter. NOT Foster's. (If you must use Foster's, get the version brewed in Australia -- it's very different to the international version).
Method:
Heat your barbeccue hotplate to a ridiculous temperature. About 200F is good.
Slice the onions thinly. Throw them on the hotplate. Have a beer.
Put your steaks on the barbie. Pour beer over them.
Have a beer.
Turn the steaks.
Have a beer.
Put the sausages on. Poke them with a fork.
Turn the steaks again.
When the onions are black, the meat is ready.
Pile the meat onto a tray, and put the onions on a separate tray. Serve the steak with a small amount of onions. Butter some bread and serve the sausages in a slice of bread, sprinkled with cooked onion and ketchup.
Serve with coleslaw, potato salad, tossed salad and ketchup or barbecue sauce. No other garnish, spices etc. are necessary or should be encouraged.
Enjoy.

Mr Goreripper speaks with authority ;)
Of course personal preference means I would replace the Beer with Coke, and I wouldn't be wasting it on the meat !
But apart from that, spot on !

Sounds really good, Goreripper. It's something I'll be trying as soon as warm weather returns (it's been snowing every morning this week).
But I'm just curious about the temp? Seems to be a digit missing. Could you possibly mean two thousand F?
Otherwise, you are going to have to drink you beer really, really really slowly.
200F will just barely reheat yesterday's rolls.

That's what I get for trying to be clever. Perhaps I should have put 200C (392F)! After all, it's an Australian recipe. Heh heh. Anyway, it doesn't matter about the temperature, as long as it's so hot you can't stand next to it comfortably.

Gor or Fussy,
Do you ever cook the onions in beer? I come from an Asian background and love my onions near-raw so I never did, but it seems the done thing among many acquaintances...
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
Well usually you get some beer on them when you pour it on the steak. I guess it's up to you, but I've never deliberately marinated my onions. What's the point? ;D
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
I just arrived home after having dinner at an Outback Steakhouse. I tried to order a Fosters beer to have with my dinner and they were out of it! That's just wrong. The Bloomin Onions sure are good though....
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
My best friend and I go there and get the Cheese fries, maybe some soup or salad (usually not) the bread (which MUST be eaten warm with the honey butter) and the Cinnamon Oblivion (which, imo, is to die for :P) If I go there with my family, I usually get a steak because I have to share everything else with 4 other people ;D
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
on the rare occation we go to the outback, i always find myself in a dilemma: cheese fries or bloomin' onion? it's terrible, i ask everyone else at the table and they all say, "oh, i don't care!" :D we got the cheese fries last time though.
i've never had dessert there...everything is so good that by the time the waiter/waitress asks if we want dessert, i'm completely full! but the leftovers are good for breakfast the next morning. ;) (or lunch, depending on what time i get up...)

If I ever get to America, I'm going to go to one of these places, so I can amuse myself about how completely un-Outback like it really is.
;D
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
I just checked out the menu. It looks pretty good, but a REAL Aussie sandwich wouldn't have pickle on it. And French Onion soup made with caramelized onions? That's a joke, yes?

It's actually pretty good, though. Caramelized just means browned until they are a caramel color, not actually coated in caramel.
Subject: Re: outback steakhouse - bloomin onions
And of course when onions are cooked to that state, they are actually slightly sweet.

Hi GazPacho !
Didn't take me too long to find this question from you huh ? ::)
No ! I do not, as I don't drink the stuff. My idiot Brother-In-Law used to drown everyhting on the BBQ in Beer, claiming it tasted better. To him perhaps, might have something to do with the fact that he was permanently pissed.... :(

The key to using beer on a BBQ is that you don't use much of it. It's meant to be a mild marinade, not gravy. If he ever did that at a BBQ I was at, he'd have been taxed for wastage!

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to call it awful, but I see your point. ;)
I just thought it was funny that I would go to a so called "Australian themed restaurant" and not be able to even buy an Australian beer because they were out of it. In fact, when I was in the UK, a couple Australians that I knew there told me they didn't like it and that Fosters was their "Budweiser". They liked Castlemaine XXXX I think it was called, how about that one?

They must have been from Queensland. Only people from the state of Queensland like XXXX. Everyone else hates it! Ha! But yeah, Fosters is Australia's Budweiser - generic, LCD beer (no offense to those who like it) ;). Most Australians drink Victoria Bitter actually, but I don't like that much either!
