Subject: Manual or Automatic?

Written By: Rice Cube on 12/20/02 at 09:55 a.m.

Do you prefer driving a manual transmission or an automatic transmission?  If you don't know how to drive a manual, would you like to learn?

Personally, I don't mind the manual transmission...just takes a bunch more practice, I drive one only about once a year when I go rent a sporty car or go on road trips with my buddies.  It's just more to do, and I HATE when my car (an automatic) doesn't pick the gear I want, or doesn't shift to a higher gear when I think it should.

My honda civice is manual, my dodge dakota is automatic.  Wouldn't have either any other way.  For smaller cars I like the control a manual gives, but for straight cruiser it doesn't matter and lager vehicles an auto is tough with all the hills we have here.
Autuo's have gotten a lot better the last decade and don't lose the power and the gad mileale the used to.

When you live in the D.C. gridlock area and spend a lot of time in stop and go traffic on the Capitol Beltway, the only way to go is automatic.  But I can drive a stick as well.

I prefer manual - I feel more in control.  My Accord & Pickup are manual transmissions...I do like automatic for larger vehicles though.

It's been automatics for me since 1989, but the new car I just bought 2 weeks ago is a 5-speed, so I'm back in Manual land.  I like the car, and with the 5-speed, she's got some balls, but I always worry that when I'm in dense, slow moving traffic and constantly having to use the clutch, that I'll burn it out fast.

I never learned how to drive a manual car. I had a few friends try and teach me but they must have lost their patience, lol. I guess I'll add it to my list of things to do before I die!

GAH!  :o    I don't think I could possibly STAND driving a STANDARD   ::)   It just confuses me. Automatic is the only way to go, in my opinion.

manual, automatic, as long as it runs, works for me! My vehicle is automatic now, but I used to have a little Ford Festiva and loved running round in it, it was stick.

I always have driven a stick.  I enjoy them and besides....if your battery ever dies you can always pop the clutch and get going again!

My friend and I used to do that for his BMW :D  It was cool, just open the doors, push it to about 15 mph in 1st gear and voila!

Well...

I 'prefer' automatic, but I drive a manual....

A lot of people these days learn on an auto (to me that  means your not learning some of the necessary components of driving anyway), get an auto licence, and buy an auto car.

That's fine but, I think it's wise to the manual skills, in case you find yourself in a position where you HAVE to drive one.

However I couldn't agree more with MissInfo comments about driving a manual in gridlock - what a pain in the patoote  :D

I learned how to drive using a manual transmission.  I think that is what I prefer, although our family vehicle is an automatic... :-/

I drove a big truck off and on for 20 years so I got tired of "swapping cogs"  loooooong ago. Call me lazy but my Outback is an auto and I like it just fine. It used to be that in four cylinders you almost had to have a stick to keep your momentum up but like Race said, they've come a long way in the last few years melding smaller engines and automatics.

I don't know how to drive a stick but would be willing to learn!! So that makes my car an automatic, doesn't it?  ;D

You could probably rent a piece-of-sh*t car for cheap and learn on that...OR you could go to your neighborhood car dealer and just take one for a spin...it helps if you have a friend who knows how to drive one to take it out of the lot before you switch places and f**k up the gears :D

My pick up is a manual, but I would prefer to have an automatic.  I drive in alot of traffic and manuals drive me nuts.

As y'all must have noticed, I am a lover of all things automotive, Race fan to the bone, and there used to be a time when I thought of autos as something for those who did not care about driving and used their cars as a means of getting from point a to point b only. Now like some of you have mentioned, technology has come a long way and autos are more and more efficient. There is a time and a place for each. Now for heavy traffic and daily commute, I'd take an automatic anyday, but for all other purposes, stick is the way to go. I also think that everyone should know how to use a manual, what if Jason Voorhees is chasing you and all you can find is a stick shift!!! :o

You said it, m'man.  For the avid car lover, stick shifts rule!

*High five*

I inherited my dad's philosophy of driving because he's the one who taught me to drive.  That philosophy is:  "Automatic is for grannies and wusses."  He refused to let me drive an automatic before I learned how to drive a manual first.
